Metafysiikan uskonnollinen loppu? : Meillassoux ja fideismi
2019
Artikkeli käy lyhyesti läpi Quentin Meillassoux’n Äärellisyyden jälkeen -teoksessa esittelemiä spekulatiivisen materialismin lähtökohtia: ajatuksen Kantin jälkeistä filosofiasta hallinneesta korrelationismista ja sen ”heikosta” ja ”vahvasta” muodosta sekä Meillassoux’n perusargumentin, jolla hän pyrkii osoittamaan vahvan korrelationismin pyrkimyksen absoluuttisista viitepiisteistä luopumiseen sisäisesti ristiriitaiseksi. Tarkastelun pääpaino on kuitenkin Meillassoux’n väitteessä, että ajattelun riisuminen kaikista absoluuttisista näkökohdista johtaa vahvan korrelationismin omaksumaan ”fideistisen”, uskon ja järjen erillisyyttä ja keskinäistä riippumattomuutta korostavan suhtautumisen uskonn…
Robust H;<inf>∞</inf> filtering for 2-D FM systems: A finite frequency approach
2012
This paper investigates the problem of robust H; ∞ filtering for uncertain two-dimensional (2-D) discrete systems in the Fornasini-Marchesini local state-space (FM LSS) model with polytopic uncertain parameters. The goal of the paper is to design filters such that the finite frequency (FF) H; ∞ norm of the filtering error system has a specified upper bound for all uncertainties. A generalized bounded real lemma (BRL) is first derived for FF H; ∞ performance analysis of nominal 2-D FM LSS systems, and then a method, in terms of solving optimization problems with LMI constraints, is presented for robust FF H; ∞ filter analysis and design. An illustrative example is given to show the improveme…
Evaluation of the Financial Threat Scale (FTS) in four european, non-student samples
2015
Abstract The Financial Threat Scale (FTS) was designed to assess levels of fear, uncertainty, and preoccupation about the stability and security of one's finances. In previous research with Canadian university students, it was shown that the FTS was a psychometrically sound measure, associated with failing personal financial conditions, threat-related personality characteristics, and depreciated psychological health. The present investigation further examines the FTS in a diverse set of non-student European samples. Data were collected in four countries using a self-report questionnaire which included measures of ones’ financial situation, personality, and psychological health. Results were…
Cardiovascular disease burden from ambient air pollution in Europe reassessed using novel hazard ratio functions
2019
Abstract Aims Ambient air pollution is a major health risk, leading to respiratory and cardiovascular mortality. A recent Global Exposure Mortality Model, based on an unmatched number of cohort studies in many countries, provides new hazard ratio functions, calling for re-evaluation of the disease burden. Accordingly, we estimated excess cardiovascular mortality attributed to air pollution in Europe. Methods and results The new hazard ratio functions have been combined with ambient air pollution exposure data to estimate the impacts in Europe and the 28 countries of the European Union (EU-28). The annual excess mortality rate from ambient air pollution in Europe is 790 000 [95% confidence i…
New Refinements of the McKay Conjecture for Arbitrary Finite Groups
2004
Let $G$ be an arbitrary finite group and fix a prime number $p$. The McKay conjecture asserts that $G$ and the normalizer in $G$ of a Sylow $p$-subgroup have equal numbers of irreducible characters with degrees not divisible by $p$. The Alperin-McKay conjecture is a version of this as applied to individual Brauer $p$-blocks of $G$. We offer evidence that perhaps much stronger forms of both of these conjectures are true.
A Spatial Multilevel Analysis of Italian SMEs Productivity
2009
Abstract In this paper, we adapt multilevel analysis methods to investigate the spatial variability of SMEs' productivity across the Italian territory, and account for differences in the socio-economic context. Our results suggest that to properly capture the variability of the data, it is important to allow for both spatial mean and slope effects. Social decay has the expected negative impact. However, while this effect is larger on firms with smaller capital intensity, firms with higher capital intensity seem to be less affected by geography. Greater territorial heterogeneity emerges among those firms with lower capital to labour ratios. Une analyse spatiale a plusieurs niveaux de la prod…

Optimization of Long-Run Average-Flow Cost in Networks With Time-Varying Unknown Demand
2010
We consider continuous-time robust network flows with capacity constraints and unknown but bounded time-varying demand. The problem of interest is to design a control strategy off-line with no knowledge of the demand realization. Such a control strategy regulates the flow on-line as a function of the realized demand. We address both the case of systems without and with buffers. The main novelty in this work is that we consider a convex cost which is a function of the long-run average-flow and average-demand. We distinguish a worst-case scenario where the demand is the worst-one from a deterministic scenario where the demand has a neutral behavior. The resulting strategies are called min-max…
Stochastic multicriteria evaluation of district heating systems considering the uncertainties
2018
It is of great importance to choose a suitable district heating (DH) system for a specific DH area from the economics, environment and energy (3E) points of view. This is a multicriteria decision making problem, in which the criteria performance values (PVs) and weighting are characterized by uncertain or imprecise information. In this study, seven candidate DH systems are evaluated from the viewpoints of 3E by the stochastic multicriteria acceptability analysis (SMAA) method. SMAA is able to handle the uncertainties of the criteria PVs and the weighting at the same time. These uncertainties are very common and typical in real-life, but in most cases are not treated judiciously or just negl…
Investigation of flow and heat transfer in corrugated passages—I. Experimental results
1996
Abstract An experimental and numerical study of flow and heat transfer was conducted for a crossed-corrugated geometry, representative of compact heat exchangers including air preheaters for fossil-fuelled power plant. In this paper, we describe the method of applying thermochromic liquid crystals and true-colour image processing to give local Nusselt number distribution over the surface, and average Nu, both of quantitative reliability; a careful uncertainty analysis is also presented. Typical experimental results for heat transfer and pressure drop are presented and discussed for various geometries and Reynolds numbers, and are compared with literature data. Numerical predictions are disc…
