Anti-schoolness in context: the tension between the youth project and the qualifications project
2011
Published version of an article in the journal Social Psychology of Education. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11218-011-9153-3 In this ethnographic study conducted in two classrooms in Norway, grade nine (14-year-olds) in lower secondary school and the first year (16-year-olds) of upper secondary school, attention is drawn to how classroom culture is constituted through relationships between students. Through processes of power, dominance, hegemony and marginalisation, classroom culture forms the conditions for a learning environment, and has different opportunities, dilemmas and costs for the students. As classroom culture is negotiated in contextual and r…
High affinity iron-uptake systems in Vibrio damsela: role in the acquisition of iron from transferrin
1997
In this work, the high affinity iron-acquisition systems displayed by virulent and avirulent strains of Vibrio damsela have been investigated. This species is an autochthonous member of marine ecosystems that can behave as an opportunistic pathogen for fish and mammals. All strains tested (i) were able to grow under the restricted conditions imposed by the iron chelators transferrin (Tf) and EDDHA, (ii) secreted siderophores of hydroxamic type, other than aerobactin and desferal, that were able to stimulate the growth of the auxotroph mutant Arthrobacter flavescens JG9, and (iii) expressed common iron-regulated outer membrane proteins (IROMPs). No change in LPS patterns was observed in resp…
Siderophore-mediated iron acquisition mechanisms in Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2
1996
Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2 is a primary pathogen for eels and, as has recently been suggested, an opportunistic pathogen for humans. In this study we have investigated the ability of V. vulnificus biotype 2 to obtain iron by siderophore-mediated mechanisms and evaluated the importance of free iron in vibriosis. The virulence degree for eels was dependent on iron availability from host fluids, as was revealed by a reduction in the 50% lethal dose for iron-overloaded eels. This biotype produced both phenolate- and hydroxamate-type siderophores of an unknown nature and two new outer membrane proteins of around 84 and 72 kDa in response to iron starvation. No alterations in lipopolysaccharide …
F17-like fimbriae from an invasive Escherichia coli strain producing cytotoxic necrotizing factor type 2 toxin
1994
The F17b fimbriae encoded by the transmissible virulence plasmid Vir, also coding for cytotoxic necrotizing factor type 2, were characterized. A 5.7-kb region of Vir mediates in vitro N-acetylglucosamine-sensitive adhesion to calf intestinal villi. Sequence analysis revealed that this region codes for a structural subunit and an adhesin closely related to the F17-A and F17-G proteins encoded by the F17 fimbrial gene cluster. The F17b-A gene presents an open reading frame of 540 bp encoding a polypeptide of 180 amino acids with a putative signal peptide of 21 residues. The mature protein shows an identity of 74% with the F17-A structural subunit. This 20-kDa protein is recognized by antiseru…
Cs2 molekulas A~b kompleksa augstas izšķirtspējas spektroskopiskie pētījumi un elektroniskās struktūras analīze
2019
Šajā maģistra darbā veikts Cs2 molekulas 〖A^1∑〗_u^+ un 〖b 〗^3 Π_u stāvokļu kompleksa elektroniskās-svārstību-rotācijas struktūras pētījums pielietojot Furjē transformāciju spektroskopijas un lāzera inducētās fluorescences (LIF) metodes. 〖A^1∑〗_u^+ un 〖b 〗^3 Π_u stāvokļus raksturo spēcīga spin-orbitālā mijiedarbība, kuras rezultātā stāvokļi veido saistītu A~b kompleksu. Cs2 molekulas pētīšanai maģistra darbā pielietota LIF metode, izmantojot dažādas lāzeru sistēmas, kombinācijā ar Furjē transformāciju spektrometru (Bruker IFS-125HR). Eksperimentāli reģistrēti un analizēti Cs2 molekulas spektri pārejās no A~b kompleksa uz pamatstāvokli. Darbā aprakstīts spektru apstrādes process, kura rezultā…
New Similarity Rules for Mining Data
2006
Variability and noise in data-sets entries make hard the discover of important regularities among association rules in mining problems. The need exists for defining flexible and robust similarity measures between association rules. This paper introduces a new class of similarity functions, SF's, that can be used to discover properties in the feature space X and to perform their grouping with standard clustering techniques. Properties of the proposed SF's are investigated and experiments on simulated data-sets are also shown to evaluate the grouping performance.
An efficient prototype merging strategy for the condensed 1-NN rule through class-conditional hierarchical clustering
2002
Abstract A generalized prototype-based classification scheme founded on hierarchical clustering is proposed. The basic idea is to obtain a condensed 1-NN classification rule by merging the two same-class nearest clusters, provided that the set of cluster representatives correctly classifies all the original points. Apart from the quality of the obtained sets and its flexibility which comes from the fact that different intercluster measures and criteria can be used, the proposed scheme includes a very efficient four-stage procedure which conveniently exploits geometric cluster properties to decide about each possible merge. Empirical results demonstrate the merits of the proposed algorithm t…
Automatic recognition of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep by artificial neural networks.
1995
Artificial neural networks are well known for their good performance in pattern recognition. Their suitability for detecting REM sleep periods on the basis of preprocessed EEG data in humans under clinical conditions was tested and their performance compared with the manual evaluation. A single channel of the EEG signal was analysed in time periods of 20 s and preprocessed into a vector of six real numbers, which served as input to the network. EOG and EMG information was ignored. Backpropagation was used as a learning rule for the network, which consisted of 12 neurons and 39 synapses. Training datasets were put together from the input vectors and the corresponding sleep stages were scored…
An Itô Formula for rough partial differential equations and some applications
2020
AbstractWe investigate existence, uniqueness and regularity for solutions of rough parabolic equations of the form $\partial _{t}u-A_{t}u-f=(\dot X_{t}(x) \cdot \nabla + \dot Y_{t}(x))u$ ∂ t u − A t u − f = ( X ̇ t ( x ) ⋅ ∇ + Y ̇ t ( x ) ) u on $[0,T]\times \mathbb {R}^{d}.$ [ 0 , T ] × ℝ d . To do so, we introduce a concept of “differential rough driver”, which comes with a counterpart of the usual controlled paths spaces in rough paths theory, built on the Sobolev spaces Wk,p. We also define a natural notion of geometricity in this context, and show how it relates to a product formula for controlled paths. In the case of transport noise (i.e. when Y = 0), we use this framework to prove a…
