Insect Immune Evasion by Dauer and Nondauer Entomopathogenic Nematodes

The immune response of animals, including insects, is overcome by some parasites. For example, dauer larvae (DL) of the obligate entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) Heterorhabditis and Steinernema can invade insects, evade their defenses, and cause death. Although DL were long assumed to be the only infective stage of nematodes, recent reports suggest that L2-L3 larvae of facultative EPNs are also capable of killing insects. Asymptomatic vaginal herpes simplex virus infections in mice: virology and pathohistology

One of the causes of genital tract infections in humans are herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1, HSV-2). Although primary and recurrent infections can be clinically apparent and in part very serious, many infections are asymptomatic and result only in temporary genital shedding of virus (recurrences). During our investigations of vaginitis, strain IES of HSV-1 produced an asymptomatic infection. Tomato yellow leaf curl Sardinia virus and Tomato yellow leaf curl virus have co-existed in Italian tomato crops since 2002 and have reached equilibrium, with plants hosting molecules of both species plus their recombinants being the most frequent case. Recombination events are studied in field samples, as well as in experimental co-infections, when recombinants were detected as early as 45 days following inoculation. Vibrio vulnificus biotype 2 is a polyphyletic group whose virulence for fish relies on a plasmid. This plasmid contains an rtxA gene duplicated in the small chromosome that encodes a MARTX (Multifunctional, Autoprocessing Repeats-in-Toxin) unique within the species in domain structure (MARTX type III). To discover the role of this toxin in the fitness of this biotype in the fish-farming environment, single- and double-knockout mutants were isolated from a zoonotic strain and analysed in a series of in vivo and in vitro experiments with eel, fish cell lines and amoebae isolated from gills. This chapter tests the profitability of various moving average trading rules in different financial markets: stocks, bonds, currencies, and commodities. The results of these tests allow us to better understand the properties of the moving average trading strategies and find out which trading rules are profitable in which markets. The chapter concludes with a few practical recommendations for traders testing the profitability of moving average trading rules. The analysis presented in this chapter also suggests a hypothesis about simultaneous existence, in the same financial market, of several trends with different durations.

This chapter utilizes the longest historical sample of data on the SP whether the choice of moving average influences the performance of trading rules; how accurately the trading rules identify the bullish and bearish stock market trends; whether there is any advantage in trading daily rather than monthly; and how persistent is the outperformance delivered by the moving average trading rules. The results of this study allow us to revisit the myths regarding the superior performance of the moving average trading rules in this well-known stock market and fully understand their advantages and disadvantages.

Null Space Based Image Recognition Using Incremental Eigendecomposition

An incremental approach to the discriminative common vector (DCV) method for image recognition is considered. Discriminative projections are tackled in the particular context in which new training data becomes available and learned subspaces may need continuous updating. Starting from incremental eigendecomposition of scatter matrices, an efficient updating rule based on projections and orthogonalization is given. The corresponding algorithm has been empirically assessed and compared to its batch counterpart. The same good properties and performance results of the original method are kept but with a dramatic decrease in the computation needed.

Learning the structure of HMM's through grammatical inference techniques

A technique is described in which all the components of a hidden Markov model are learnt from training speech data. The structure or topology of the model (i.e. the number of states and the actual transitions) is obtained by means of an error-correcting grammatical inference algorithm (ECGI). This structure is then reduced by using an appropriate state pruning criterion. The statistical parameters that are associated with the obtained topology are estimated from the same training data by means of the standard Baum-Welch algorithm.
