More Support for More-Support

2009

This book provides the most comprehensive account so far of novel and hitherto unexplained factors operative in the choice between synthetic ( prouder ) and analytic ( more proud ) comparatives. It argues that the underlying motivation in using the analytic variant is to mitigate processing demands – a compensatory strategy referred to as more -support. The analytic variant is claimed to be better suited to environments of increased processing complexity – presumably owing to its ability to facilitate early phrase structure recognition, the more transparent one-to-one relation between form and function and possibly because the degree marker more can serve as a structural signal foreshadowin…

Sources and Boundaries of Institutional and Linguistic Normativity. Towards a Critical Social Ontology.

2013

Since Hegel and until speech acts theory and contemporary social ontology it came to full development the idea that most of reasons, duties, rights, entitlements, have to do, against Kant, with our participation to social, linguistic and institutional practices of the lifeform to which we belong rather than or more than with our dealing with “substantive moral principles”. But if we accept, with Hegel, that every individual rational determination of the will is justified as such only as a part of our collective Sittlichkheit (Hegel, 1967, cf. Di Lorenzo Ajello, 2009); if we accept from speech acts theory that there are commitments, rights and entitlements specific to every type of speech ac…

Survival Strategy of Erwinia amylovora against Copper: Induction of the Viable-but-Nonculturable State

2006

Copper compounds, widely used to control plant-pathogenic bacteria, have traditionally been employed against fire blight, caused by Erwinia amylovora. However, recent studies have shown that some phytopathogenic bacteria enter into the viable-but-nonculturable (VBNC) state in the presence of copper. To determine whether copper kills E. amylovora or induces the VBNC state, a mineral medium without copper or supplemented with 0.005, 0.01, or 0.05 mM Cu2+ was inoculated with 107 CFU/ml of this bacterium and monitored over 9 months. Total and viable cell counts were determined by epifluorescence microscopy using the LIVE/DEAD kit and by flow cytometry with 5-cyano-2,3-ditolyl tetrazolium chlori…

LR(k) Parsing

1990

In this chapter we shall generalize the notion of strong LL(k) parsing presented in Chapter 5 and consider a method for deterministic left parsing that applies to a slightly wider class of context-free grammars than does the strong LL(k) parsing method. This method will be called “canonical LL(k) parsing”. As in strong LL(k) parsing, the acronym “LL(k)” means that the input string is parsed (1) in a single Left-to-right scan, (2) producing a Left parse, and (3) using lookahead of length k.

On the signature of four-manifolds with universal covering spin

1993

In this note we study closed oriented 4-manifolds whose universal covering is spin and ask whether there are restrictions on the divisibility of the signature. Since any natural number appears as the signature of a connected sum of r 2,s, without the assumption on the universal covering there cannot exist any restrictions. Certainly, the most famous such restriction was proved by Rohlin in [10], where he showed that the signature a of a smooth 4-dimensional spin manifold is divisible by 16 (compare part (2) of our Main Theorem for a new proof). The Kummer surface K shows that this is the best possible general result. Dividing by a certain free holomorphic involution on K, one obtains the En…

Novel patterns for vector mesons from the large-Nc limit

2008

We report on a relation between the decay constants of \rho-like J^{PC}=1^{--} vector mesons, which arises solely from the perturbative analysis of the VV, TT and VT correlators at order \alpha_s^0 in the large-N_c limit. We find f_{V}^T/f_{V}=1/\sqrt{2} for highly excited states together with a pattern of alternation in sign. Quite remarkably, recent lattice determinations reported f_{\rho}^T/f_{\rho}=0.72(2), in excellent agreement with our large-N_c result. This seems to suggest a pattern like f_{Vn}^T/f_{Vn}=(-1)^n/\sqrt{2} for the whole (1^{--}) states. In order to test this conjecture in real QCD we construct a set of spectral sum rules, which turn out to comply nicely with this scena…

The best choice problem with an unknown number of objects

1993

The secretary problem with a known prior distribution of the number of candidates is considered. Ifp(i)=p(N=i),i ∈ [α, β] ∩ ℕ, whereα=inf{i ∈ℕ:p(i) > 0} andβ=sup{i ∈ℕ:p(i)≳0}, is the prior distribution of the numberN of candidates it will be shown that, if the optimal stopping rule is of the simple form, then the optimal stopping indexj=minΓ satisfies asymptotically (asβ → ∞) the equationj=exp $${{\left[ {\left( {\sum\limits_{i = max(\alpha ,j)}^\beta {p(i) \log (i)/i} } \right)} \right]} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{\left[ {\left( {\sum\limits_{i = max(\alpha ,j)}^\beta {p(i) \log (i)/i} } \right)} \right]} {\left. {\left( {\sum\limits_{i = max(\alpha ,j)}^\beta {p(i)/i} } \right) - 1} \ri…

Causes of cetacean stranding and death on the Catalonian coast (western Mediterranean Sea), 2012-2019

2020

The causes of cetacean stranding and death along the Catalan coast between 2012 and 2019 were systematically investigated. Necropsies and detailed pathological investigations were performed on 89 well-preserved stranded cetaceans, including 72 striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba, 9 Risso’s dolphins Grampus griseus, 5 bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus, 1 common dolphin Delphinus delphis, 1 Cuvier’s beaked whale Ziphius cavirostris and 1 fin whale Balaenoptera physalus. The cause of death was determined for 89.9% of the stranded cetaceans. Fisheries interaction was the most frequent cause of death in striped dolphins (27.8%) and bottlenose dolphins (60%). Cetacean morbillivirus (CeMV)…

Host specificity ofOschmarinella rochebruniandBrachycladium atlanticum(Digenea: Brachycladiidae) in five cetacean species from western Mediterranean …

2010

AbstractWe investigated patterns of specificity of liver flukes (fam. Brachycladiidae) in a community of cetaceans from the western Mediterranean. The liver and pancreas of 103 striped dolphins,Stenella coeruleoalba, 18 Risso's dolphins,Grampus griseus, 14 bottlenose dolphins,Tursiops truncatus, 8 common dolphins,Delphinus delphis, and 5 long-finned pilot whales,Globicephala melas, were analysed for brachycladiid species. Two species were found:Oschmarinella rochebruniin striped dolphins (prevalence (P): 61.2%; mean intensity (MI) (95% CI): 34.2 (25.7–45.6)), andBrachycladium atlanticumin striped dolphins (P: 39.8%; MI: 7.1 (4.8–13.1)) and a single individual of common dolphin (P: 12.5%; in…

Krajowa Rada Narodowa i Polski Komitet Wyzwolenia Narodowego w państwie prawa. Stanowiska doktryny

2021

<p>The establishment of the communist regime in Poland in 1944 is a current subject of reflection in the doctrine and practice of legislation and judiciary. There has been no uniform position on these events, which means that the then sanctioned political and normative order continues to produce controversial assessments and, above all, certain legal effects. This results from the fact that the new people’s power, empowered by force, and not by legal or social basis, has given itself the competence to establish a normative order. The lack of legitimacy for the rightful rule and legislative activity, in principle – from the point of view of the idea of the rule of law – undermines the …
