Radiation-induced point defects in simple oxides

1998

We present a survey of recent theoretical studies of radiation-induced point defects in simple oxides with emphasis on highly ionic MgO, partly-covalent corundum (Al2O3) and ferroelectric KNbO3. The atomic and electronic structure of the electronic (F a and F centers) and hole centers, as well as interstitial atoms therein are discussed in light of the available experimental data. Results for defect diAusion and photo-stimulated F a fi F center conversion are also ana

Nuclear response functions in homogeneous matter with finite range effective interactions

2005

The question of nuclear response functions in a homogeneous medium is examined. A general method for calculating response functions in the random phase approximation (RPA) with exchange is presented. The method is applicable for finite-range nuclear interactions. Examples are shown in the case of symmetric nuclear matter described by a Gogny interaction. It is found that the convergence of the results with respect to the multipole truncation is quite fast. Various approximation schemes such as the Landau approximation, or the Landau approximation for the exchange terms only, are discussed in comparison with the exact results.

High-order Runge–Kutta–Nyström geometric methods with processing

2001

Abstract We present new families of sixth- and eighth-order Runge–Kutta–Nystrom geometric integrators with processing for ordinary differential equations. Both the processor and the kernel are composed of explicitly computable flows associated with non trivial elements belonging to the Lie algebra involved in the problem. Their efficiency is found to be superior to other previously known algorithms of equivalent order, in some case up to four orders of magnitude.

Order optimal preconditioners for fully implicit Runge-Kutta schemes applied to the bidomain equations

2010

The partial differential equation part of the bidomain equations is discretized in time with fully implicit Runge–Kutta methods, and the resulting block systems are preconditioned with a block diagonal preconditioner. By studying the time-stepping operator in the proper Sobolev spaces, we show that the preconditioned systems have bounded condition numbers given that the Runge–Kutta scheme is A-stable and irreducible with an invertible coefficient matrix. A new proof of order optimality of the preconditioners for the one-leg discretization in time of the bidomain equations is also presented. The theoretical results are verified by numerical experiments. Additionally, the concept of weakly po…

A preliminary study of presence of resveratrol in skins and pulps of European and Japanese plum cultivars

2012

BACKGROUND: Resveratrol is a polyphenol with health properties being mainly present in the skins of several foods. However, any study has been carried out to analyze the presence of this stilbene in the plum fruit from the genus Prunus in European and Japanese cultivars. RESULTS: The analysis of resveratrol from the skin in different cultivars of plums from Spanish markets with liquid chromatography coupled to ultraviolet (LC-UV) detector with subsequent confirmation by LC-MS/MS has been demonstrated that contents of this compound in plums ranged from 0.1 to 6.2 µg/g. CONCLUSIONS: Values of resveratrol in European plum cultivars is higher than in Japanese cultivars. Copyright © 2012 Society…

Effect of nitrogen nutrition on Medicago truncatula resistance against Aphanomyces euteiches

2016

Nitrogen (N) is a major limiting factor for plant growth. N availability can also impact plant resistance to pathogens by regulating plant immunity. To better understand the links between N nutrition and plant defense, we analyzed the impact of N availability of plant on Medicago truncatula resistance to the root pathogen, Aphanomyces euteiches, taking into account plant genetic variability. This oomycete is considered as the most limiting factor for legume production. Two conditions of N nutrition, non-limiting or deprived in N, and ten plant genotypes were tested in vitro. The results showed that the resistance is modulated by nutritional conditions, depending on plant genotype. Analysis …

Calibration of advanced Virgo and reconstruction of the gravitational wave signal h(t) during the observing run O2

2018

In August 2017, Advanced Virgo joined Advanced LIGO for the end of the O2 run, leading to the first gravitational waves detections with the three-detector network. This paper describes the Advanced Virgo calibration and the gravitational wave strain h(t) reconstruction during O2. The methods are the same as the ones developed for the initial Virgo detector and have already been described in previous publications, this paper summarizes the differences and emphasis is put on estimating systematic uncertainties. Three versions of the h(t) signal have been computed for the Virgo O2 run, an online version and two post-run reprocessed versions with improved detector calibration and reconstruction…

Reprint of: Approximate Taylor methods for ODEs

2018

Abstract A new method for the numerical solution of ODEs is presented. This approach is based on an approximate formulation of the Taylor methods that has a much easier implementation than the original Taylor methods, since only the functions in the ODEs, and not their derivatives, are needed, just as in classical Runge–Kutta schemes. Compared to Runge–Kutta methods, the number of function evaluations to achieve a given order is higher, however with the present procedure it is much easier to produce arbitrary high-order schemes, which may be important in some applications. In many cases the new approach leads to an asymptotically lower computational cost when compared to the Taylor expansio…
