Protocols for UAS-based observation

2023

In Chapter 1 the terms and the characteristics of an unmanned spatial data collection system were defined along with the fields of application, advantages, and disadvantages of different solutions and sensors. This chapter will present an overview of existing protocols and broad guidelines on environmental unmanned aerial system (UAS)-based monitoring, including study design with the general and possible use of the platform and sensor/camera settings, comprising quality assurance (QA) with all necessary steps (i.e., georeferencing, radiometric calibration for optical and thermal sensors, programming the flight mission, and data processing) to fulfill a complete survey mission for a given en…

Telemedicine for the acute management of stroke in Burgundy, France: an evaluation of effectiveness and safety

2016

Background In the context of the development of telemedicine in France to address low thrombolysis rates and limited stroke infrastructures, a star-shaped telestroke network was implemented in Burgundy (1.6 million inhabitants). We evaluated the safety and effectiveness of this network for thrombolysis in acute ischemic stroke patients. Methods One hundred and thirty-two consecutive patients who received intravenous thrombolysis during a telemedicine procedure (2012–2014) and 222 consecutive patients who were treated at the stroke center of Dijon University Hospital, France (2011–2012) were included. Main outcomes were the modified Rankin scale (mRS) score and case fatality at 3 months. Com…

Associations of black carbon with lung function and airway inflammation in schoolchildren

2019

Background: Few studies have investigated the 24-hour respiratory health effects of personal black carbon (BC) and ultrafine particles (UFP) exposure in schoolchildren. The objective of this study was to investigate these associations with the lung function in children 10-years old with and without persistent respiratory symptoms. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in 305 children (147 and 158 with and without persistent respiratory symptoms, respectively) from three European birth-cohorts: PARIS (France) and INMA Sabadell and Valencia (Spain). Personal 24-hour measurements of exposure concentrations to BC and UFP were performed by portable devices, before lung function testing. …

Eresus kollari (Araneae: Eresidae) calls for heathland management

2011

Northwest Europe’s largest heather-dominated sandy habitats are located in the nature reserve Lu¨neburgerHeide, Germany. Yet, even these appear to be losing their ability to support some of their stenotopic species such as theladybird spider, Eresus kollari Rossi 1846, and are thus becoming increasingly important for the preservation of thesespecies. The habitat requirements of this endangered spider species were investigated in order to obtain data that will helpstabilize the last remnants of the species’ population in northwest Germany. Several heathland habitats were surveyed bypitfall trapping during the mate-search period of the males. Two statistical methods were applied: logistic reg…

Inhibitory effect of sweet whey fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum strains against fungal growth: A potential application as an antifungal agent

2020

Abstract: The presence of mycotoxigenic fungi such as Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Fusarium genera represents a problem in food preservation and consequently, its spoilage. During the fermentation process with lactic acid bacteria, a range of secondary metabolites associated with beneficial health effects were released. In the present study, goat whey fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum (CECT 220, 221, 223, and 748) species has shown a satisfactory inhibitory effect against 28 fungi, showing for certain species of Fusarium genus and also, for Aspergillus steynii, a value of minimum inhibitory concentration until 1.95 g/L. In addition, phenyllactic acid was identified in each sample of fer…

Oral Health-Related Quality of Life in institutionalized elderly in Barcelona (Spain).

2012

Objective: The objective of this study is to describe the oral health status and the factors associated with oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in people aged 65 and older institutionalized in Barcelona in 2009. Study Design: Cross sectional study in 194 elderly. The dependent variable was poor OHRQoL, according to the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI). The independent variables were socio-demographic data, last dental visit, subjective and objective oral health status. Robust Poisson regression analysis was used to determine the factors associated with OHRQoL as well as the strengths of association (Prevalence Ratios with respective confidence intervals at 95%). Resu…

The role of physical activity in the link between menopausal status and mental well-being

2020

OBJECTIVE To examine the relationship between menopausal status and mental well-being, and whether this relationship varies as a function of physical activity (PA). METHODS Based on a hormonal analysis and bleeding diary, women aged 47 to 55 were categorized as pre (n = 304), early peri (n = 198), late peri (n = 209), or postmenopausal (n = 387). Mental well-being was assessed using the Centre for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, the International Positive and Negative Affect Schedule Short Form, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale. PA was self-reported and categorized as low, medium, and high. Associations between variables were analyzed using multivariate linear regression adjuste…

Quantifying the Indicator Power of an Indicator Species

2009

Biodiversity indicator species are needed for classifying biotopes and sites for conservation, and a number of methods have been developed for determining indicator species for this purpose. Nevertheless, in addition to site classification, there is sometimes a need to define an indicator species that indicates the occurrence of another species. For example, when a species of interest (target species) is difficult to detect or identify, a reliable indicator species can function as a tool that saves time and money. We derived a method that provides a quantitative measure of the indicator power (IP) of an indicator species for the target species or any species assemblage. We calculated the me…

Elementary Newtonian Mechanics

2010

This chapter deals with the kinematics and the dynamics of a finite number of mass points that are subject to internal, and possibly external, forces, but whose motions are not further constrained by additional conditions on the coordinates. Constraints such as requiring some mass points to follow given curves in space, to keep their relative distance fixed, or the like, are introduced in Chap. 2. Unconstrained mechanical systems can be studied directly by means of Newton’s equations and do not require the introduction of new, generalized coordinates that incorporate the constraints and are dynamically independent. This is what is meant by “elementary” in the heading of this chapter — thoug…

Predicting shifting sustainability trade-offs in marine finfish aquaculture under climate change

2018

Defining sustainability goals is a crucial but difficult task because it often involves the quantification of multiple interrelated and sometimes conflicting components. This complexity may be exacerbated by climate change, which will increase environmental vulnerability in aquaculture and potentially compromise the ability to meet the needs of a growing human population. Here, we developed an approach to inform sustainable aquaculture by quantifying spatio-temporal shifts in critical trade-offs between environmental costs and benefits using the time to reach the commercial size as a possible proxy of economic implications of aquaculture under climate change. Our results indicate that optim…
