Endovascular Embolization of a Large High-Flow Splenic Arteriovenous Fistula and Aneurysm Using the Amplatzer Vascular Plug II.

2015

We describe the use of an Amplatzer Vascular Plug (AVP) II for embolizing a large high-flow splenic arteriovenous fistula and an aneurysm in a young patient. This patient presented to our center with persistent mild abdominal discomfort, 5 years after open splenectomy. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography angiography showed the presence of a fistula between the splenic arterial and splenic venous remnants and a resultant fusiform aneurysmal dilatation of the residual splenic vein. We decide to embolize the splenic artery with a 12-mm diameter AVP II with an oversizing by 70% of the vessel diameter. Celiac angiography performed 5 min postembolization revealed complete obliteration of the sp…

Long-Term Results of Ileocecal Continent Urinary Diversion in Patients Treated With and Without Previous Pelvic Irradiation

2002

Patients who receive pelvic irradiation may require urinary diversion to manage complications resulting from progressive malignancy or radiotherapy. The choice of urinary diversion is an important issue and remains controversial. We characterized the long-term outcome of urinary diversion with a continent ileocecal reservoir in patients who received pelvic irradiation versus those who underwent urinary diversion without previous irradiation.Continent urinary diversion with an ileocecal reservoir (Mainz pouch 1) was performed in 36 irradiated patients in a 9-year period. Morbidity, mortality, the reoperative rate and parameters associated with the surgical procedure were determined at a medi…

Diagnostic radiological examinations and risk of intracranial tumours in adults—findings from the Interphone Study

2021

Abstract Background Exposure to high doses of ionizing radiation is among the few well-established brain tumour risk factors. We used data from the Interphone study to evaluate the effects of exposure to low-dose radiation from diagnostic radiological examinations on glioma, meningioma and acoustic neuroma risk. Methods Brain tumour cases (2644 gliomas, 2236 meningiomas, 1083 neuromas) diagnosed in 2000–02 were identified through hospitals in 13 countries, and 6068 controls (population-based controls in most centres) were included in the analysis. Participation across all centres was 64% for glioma cases, 78% for meningioma cases, 82% for acoustic neuroma cases and 53% for controls. Informa…

Fetal dose measurements and shielding efficiency assessment in a custom setup of (192)Ir brachytherapy for a pregnant woman with breast cancer.

2015

To assess the radiation dose to the fetus of a pregnant patient undergoing high-dose-rate (HDR) (192)Ir interstitial breast brachytherapy, and to design a new patient setup and lead shielding technique that minimizes the fetal dose.Radiochromic films were placed between the slices of an anthropomorphic phantom modeling the patient. The pregnant woman was seated in a chair with the breast over a table and inside a leaded box. Dose variation as a function of distance from the implant volume as well as dose homogeneity within a representative slice of the fetal position was evaluated without and with shielding. With shielding, the peripheral dose after a complete treatment ranged from 50 cGy at…

The Potential Role of Lung Ultrasound B-Lines for Detection of Lung Radio-Induced Toxicity in Breast Cancer Patients after Radiation Therapy.

2016

Breast cancer patients exposed to doses of radiation after radiotherapy could develop toxicity to lung. Lung ultrasound (LUS) is able to detect interstitial lung disease by the evaluation of B-lines. The aim of our study was to assess the number of B-lines to diagnose lung involvement after chest radiotherapy. We measured LUS B-lines in the treated and contralateral lung of 20 breast cancer patients, 1-3 months after the end of radiotherapy and 1 year after previous LUS. The sum of the B-lines number in the 72 sites on anterior and posterior chest yielded a global B-lines score.B-lines were more numerous in treated (median: 21; 1st-3rd quartiles: 11-31) versus untreated hemithorax (median: 3…

Inguinal Reconstruction Using Pedicled Rectus Abdominis Flap: A Useful Option for the Application of Radiotherapy.

2019

Given their high rate of complications, radical surgical procedures of anorectal and gynecological tumors require a reliable and individualized reconstruction. The latter is influenced by the frequent indication of adjuvant chemo/radiotherapy that they present. We describe the case of a patient with medical history of vulvar carcinoma that required radical surgery and bilateral inguinal lymphadenectomy. Because of the stage of the tumor, the application of postoperative radiotherapy was clinically indicated; however, after surgery, the patient developed bilateral inguinal ulcers that made postoperative radiotherapy application impossible. Using a radical surgical approach in combination wit…

Aerosol properties of the Eyjafjallajökull ash derived from sun photometer and satellite observations over the Iberian Peninsula

2012

The Eyjafjallajökull ash that crossed over Spain and Portugal on 6e12 May 2010 has been monitored by a set of operational sun photometer sites within AERONET-RIMA and satellite sensors. The sun photometer observations (aerosol optical depth, coarse mode concentrations) and ash products from IASI and SEVIRI satellite sensors, together with FLEXPART simulations of particle transport, allow identifying the volcanic aerosols. The aerosol columnar properties derived from inversions were investigated, indicating specific properties, especially regarding the absorption. The single scattering albedo was high (0.95 at 440 nm) and nearly wavelength independent, although with slight decrease with wave…

Water-Insoluble Organics Dominate Brown Carbon in Wintertime Urban Aerosol of China: Chemical Characteristics and Optical Properties.

2020

The chromophores responsible for light absorption in atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) are not well characterized, which hinders our understanding of BrC chemistry, the links with optical properties, and accurate model representations of BrC to global climate and atmospheric oxidative capacity. In this study, the light absorption properties and chromophore composition of three BrC fractions of different polarities were characterized for urban aerosol collected in Xi'an and Beijing in winter 2013-2014. These three BrC fractions show large differences in light absorption and chromophore composition, but the chromophores responsible for light absorption are similar in Xi'an and Beijing. Water-ins…

Abdominal Computed Tomography Angiography at 80kV: feasibility study.

2014

preliminary evaluation of different dose reduction algorithms in abdominal Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) with standard scan protocols at 120kV vs. 80kV.prospective, randomized, crossover study. 60 consecutive patients who underwent CTA of the abdomen (Sensation 64, Siemens; Iomeprol 400 mgl/ml Bracco) for suspected or diagnosed Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) were enrolled in the study. A standard 120kV/200mAs scan protocol was acquired in all patients (reference tube current modulated with Automatic Exposure Control). In each patient a second scan with 80kV/300mAs (Group 1; n. 20), 80kV/400mAs (Group 2; n. 20), 80kV/500mAs (Group 3; n. 20) was acquired. We used the same scan/recons…

ESR response to gamma-rays of alanine pellets containing B(OH)3 or Gd2O3.

2007

ESR response to gamma-irradiation (1-50 Gy) of blends containing alanine and either B(OH)(3) or Gd(2)O(3) is reported. The sensitivity of the alanine--B(OH)(3) blend is comparable to the sensitivity of pure alanine, although its lowest detectable dose, LDD, is smaller ( approximately 1.3 Gy) than that of pure alanine ( approximately 2.9 Gy). Alanine with Gd(2)O(3) is about two times more sensitive than pure alanine, and its LDD is 0.8 Gy. The better sensitivity and LDD are probably due to the high atomic number (Z=64) of gadolinium, which enhances the interaction probability with photons and, consequently, the radical yield. This study suggests that other high-Z atoms may be useful for incr…
