The UV Index on the Spanish Mediterranean Coast¶

2005

An analysis is made of measured ultraviolet erythemal solar radiation (UVER) data recorded during the year 2003 by the networks of the Catalan Weather Service and the Environment Department of Valencia (both on the Spanish Mediterranean coast). Results show a latitudinal variation at sea level, of 3-4% per degree and an increase with altitude of 10% per km. Based on these data the UV Index has been evaluated for the measuring stations. The maximum experimental value of the UV Index was around 9 during the summer, although higher values were recorded at two stations, one at the highest elevation and the other at the lowest latitude. The annual accumulated doses of irradiation on a horizontal…

Retrieving leaf area index from multi-angular airborne data

2009

This work is aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of a methodology for retrieving bio-geophysical variables whilst at the same time fully accounting for additional information on directional anisotropy. A model-based approach has been developed to deconvolve the angular reflectance into single landcovers reflectances, attempting to solve the inconsistencies of 1D models and linear mixture approaches. The model combines the geometric optics of large scale canopy structure with principles of radiative transfer for volume scattering within individual crowns. The reliability of the model approach to retrieve LAI has been demonstrated using data from DAISEX- 99 campaign at Barrax, Spain. Airborn…

Irradiance in polluted cumulus fields: Measured and modeled cloud-aerosol effects

2009

[1] We present a new strategy to validate modeled spectral irradiance of shallow cumulus cloud fields in a polluted background with airborne measurements. The concept is based on a spectral distinction of effects associated with heterogeneous clouds, aerosol particles, and surface albedo. We use measurements from the Gulf of Mexico Atmospheric Composition and Climate Study, conducted in the urban-industrial Houston area. Modeled irradiance fields were obtained from extensive three-dimensional radiative transfer calculations applied to the output of large eddy simulations. We show that the measurements below clouds or cloud gaps can only be reproduced by the calculations when including the a…

Error sources on the land surface temperature retrieved from thermal infrared single channel remote sensing data

2006

In this paper, a theoretical study complementary to others given in the literature about the errors committed on the land surface temperature retrieved from the radiative transfer equation in the thermal infrared region by remote sensing techniques has been analysed. For this purpose, the MODTRAN 3.5 code has been used in order to simulate different conditions and evaluate the influence of several parameters on the land surface temperature accuracy: atmospheric correction, noise of the sensor, land surface emissivity, aerosols and other gaseous absorbers, angular effects, wavelength uncertainty, full‐width half‐maximum of the sensor and band‐pass effects. The results show that the most impo…

Determination of the effective emissivity and temperature under vertical observation of a citrus orchard. Application to frost nowcasting

1988

Abstract In this work we use Becker's model for the determination of the effective temperature and emissivity under vertical observation of a citrus orchard. We apply this model to the particular case of a typically radiative night cooling (completely clear sky and calm wind) condition under which radiation frosts are normally produced which are damaging to the fruit and, consequently, to the Valencian economy. An attempt is made to establish a safety limit over which a frost cannot be produced. Ground and orange tree emissivity measurements were carried out by means of the box method. We were able to construct a hand-driven scanning system for the temperature measurement of the ground-oran…

Radiation in the Atmosphere - A Course in Theoretical Meteorology

2007

This book presents the theory and applications of radiative transfer in the atmosphere. It is written for graduate students and researchers in the fields of meteorology and related sciences. The book begins with important basic definitions of the radiative transfer theory. It presents the hydrodynamic derivation of the radiative transfer equation and the principles of variance. The authors examine in detail various quasi-exact solutions of the radiative transfer equation and give a thorough treatment of the radiative perturbation theory. A rigorous treatment of Mie scattering is given, including Rayleigh scattering as a special case, and the important efficiency factors for extinction, scat…

Accuracy assessment of land surface temperature retrievals from MSG2-SEVIRI data

2011

The accuracy of the Land Surface Temperature (LST) product generated operationally by the EUMETSAT Land Surface Analysis Satellite Applications Facility (LSA SAF) from the data registered by the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) on board the geostationary METEOSAT Second Generation 2 (MSG2, Meteosat 9) satellite was assessed on two test sites in Eastern Spain: a homogeneous, fully vegetated rice field and a high-plain, homogeneous area of shrubland. The LSA SAF LSTs were compared with ground LST measurements in the conventional temperature-based (T-based) method. We also validated the LSA SAF LST product by using an alternative radiance-based (R-based) method, with grou…

Radiative efficiency of lead iodide based perovskite solar cells

2014

The maximum efficiency of any solar cell can be evaluated in terms of its corresponding ability to emit light. We herein determine the important figure of merit of radiative efficiency for Methylammonium Lead Iodide perovskite solar cells and, to put in context, relate it to an organic photovoltaic (OPV) model device. We evaluate the reciprocity relation between electroluminescence and photovoltaic quantum efficiency and conclude that the emission from the perovskite devices is dominated by a sharp band-to-band transition that has a radiative efficiency much higher than that of an average OPV device. As a consequence, the perovskite have the benefit of retaining an open circuit voltage ~0.1…

Surface Emissivity Retrieval From Airborne Hyperspectral Scanner Data: Insights on Atmospheric Correction and Noise Removal

2012

Airborne multispectral imagers have been used in validation campaigns in order to acquire very high spatial resolution data as a benchmark for current or future satellite data. Imagery acquired with such sensors implies specific data processing in relation to view-angle-dependent atmospheric correction and removal or minimization of stripping-based noise. It is necessary to appropriately perform this processing in order to benefit from reference imageries of surface temperature (T) and emissivity (e) maps retrieved from thermal infrared data. In particular, e images generated from T/e separation algorithms show undesirable noise that jeopardizes their photointerpretation. This letter addres…
