Soil Moisture Retrieved From a Combined Optical and Passive Microwave Approach

2016

Abstract With the current remote sensing technology developments, and in particular those at L-band (1.2–1.4 GHz) frequencies such as the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity and the Soil Moisture Active and Passive missions, new approaches concerning passive microwave and its combination with existing optical technologies have become of special interest for the estimation of surface soil moisture. One of these new approaches is the combination of optical and passive microwave data based on a semiempirical approach derived from the general radiative transfer equation. The objective of this chapter is to present some applications of the combined optical-passive microwave approaches over several …

<title>Temperature and emissivity retrieval from DAIS data: application to the DAISEX campaigns in Colmar (France) and Barrax (Spain)</title…

2001

In the present paper it is presented a methodology to calculate the surface temperature (ST) from the combination of the radiometric temperature in two different DAIS (Digital Airborne Imaging Spectrometer) thermal bands using split-window (sw) method. To get this objective the MODTRAN 3.5 radiative transfer code was used to predict radiance for DAIS channels 74 (8.75 µm), 75 (9.65 µm), 76 (10.48 µm), 77 (1 1.27 µm), 78 (12.00 µm) and 79 (12.67 µm) at different aircraft altitudes with the appropriate channel filter functions. In order to analyse atmospheric effects a set of radiosoundings that cover the variability of surface temperature and water vapour concentration on a world-wide scale …

Estimation of leaf area index using PROSAIL based LUT inversion, MLRA-GPR and empirical models: Case study of tropical deciduous forest plantation, N…

2020

Abstract Forests play a vital role in biological cycles and environmental regulation. To understand the key processes of forest canopies (e.g., photosynthesis, respiration and transpiration), reliable and accurate information on spatial variability of Leaf Area Index (LAI), and its seasonal dynamics is essential. In the present study, we assessed the performance of biophysical parameter (LAI) retrieval methods viz. Look-Up Table (LUT)-inversion, MLRA-GPR (Machine Learning Regression Algorithm- Gaussian Processes Regression) and empirical models, for estimating the LAI of tropical deciduous plantation using ARTMO (Automated Radiative Transfer Models Operator) tool and Sentinel-2 satellite im…

Estimating the phenological dynamics of irrigated rice leaf area index using the combination of PROSAIL and Gaussian Process Regression

2021

The growth of rice is a sequence of three different phenological phases. This sequence of change in rice phenology implies that the condition of the plant during the vegetative phase relates directly to the health of leaves functioning during the reproductive and ripening phases. As such, accurate monitoring is important towards understanding rice growth dynamics. Leaf Area Index (LAI) is an important indicator of rice yields and the availability of this information during key phenological phases can support more informed farming decisions. Satellite remote sensing has been adopted as a proxy to field measurements of LAI and with the launch of freely available high resolution Satellite imag…

Core-collapse supernova simulations in one and two dimensions: comparison of codes and approximations

2018

We present spherically symmetric (1D) and axisymmetric (2D) supernova simulations for a convection-dominated 9 Msun and a 20 Msun progenitor that develops violent activity by the standing-accretion-shock instability (SASI). We compare in detail the Aenus-Alcar code, which uses fully multidimensional two-moment neutrino transport with an M1 closure, with a ray-by-ray-plus (RbR+) version of this code and with the Prometheus-Vertex code that employs RbR+ two-moment transport with a Boltzmann closure. Besides testing consequences of ignored non-radial neutrino-flux components in the RbR+ approximation, we also discuss the influence of various transport ingredients applied or not applied in rece…

Radio observations of active galactic nuclei with mm-VLBI

2017

Over the past few decades, our knowledge of jets produced by active galactic nuclei (AGN) has greatly progressed thanks to the development of very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI). Nevertheless, the crucial mechanisms involved in the formation of the plasma flow, as well as those driving its exceptional radiative output up to TeV energies, remain to be clarified. Most likely, these physical processes take place at short separations from the supermassive black hole, on scales which are inaccessible to VLBI observations at centimeter wavelengths. Due to their high synchrotron opacity, the dense and highly magnetized regions in the vicinity of the central engine can only be penetrated when …

Numerical simulations of dynamics and emission from relativistic astrophysical jets

2013

Broadband emission from relativistic outflows (jets) of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) contains valuable information about the nature of the jet itself, and about the central engine which launches it. Using special relativistic hydrodynamics and magnetohydronamics simulations we study the dynamics of the jet and its interaction with the surrounding medium. The observational signature of the simulated jets is computed using a radiative transfer code developed specifically for the purpose of computing multi-wavelength, time-dependent, non-thermal emission from astrophysical plasmas. We present results of a series of long-term projects devoted to understanding the dyn…

Numerical models of blackbody-dominated gamma-ray bursts – I. Hydrodynamics and the origin of the thermal emission

2014

GRB 101225A is a prototype of the class of blackbody-dominated (BBD) gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). It has been suggested that BBD-GRBs result from the merger of a binary system formed by a neutron star and the helium core of an evolved star. We have modelled the propagation of ultrarelativistic jets through the environment left behind the merger by means of relativistic hydrodynamic simulations. In this paper, the output of our numerical models is post-processed to obtain the (thermal) radiative signature of the resulting outflow. We outline the most relevant dynamical details of the jet propagation and connect them to the generation of thermal radiation in GRB events akin to that of GRB 101225A…

Using evolutionary algorithms to model relativistic jets

2019

High-resolution Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry observations of NGC 1052 show a two sided jet with several regions of enhanced emission and a clear emission gap between the two jets. This gap shrinks with increasing frequency and vanishes around $\nu\sim43$ GHz. The observed structures are due to both the macroscopic fluid dynamics interacting with the surrounding ambient medium including an obscuring torus and the radiation microphysics. In this paper we investigate the possible physical conditions in relativistic jets of NGC 1052 by directly modelling the observed emission and spectra via state-of-the-art special-relativistic hydrodynamic (SRHD) simulations and radiative transfer calcula…

Clouds and red giants interacting with the base of AGN jets

2012

Extragalactic jets are formed close to supermassive black-holes in the center of galaxies. Large amounts of gas, dust, and stars cluster in the galaxy nucleus, and interactions between this ambient material and the jet base should be frequent, having dynamical as well as radiative consequences. This work studies the dynamical interaction of an obstacle, a clump of matter or the atmosphere of an evolved star, with the innermost region of an extragalactic jet. Jet mass-loading and the high-energy outcome of this interaction are briefly discussed. Relativistic hydrodynamical simulations with axial symmetry have been carried out for homogeneous and inhomogeneous obstacles inside a relativistic …
