Synthesis of well-defined polymeric activated esters

2008

Monomers bearing an activated ester group can be polymerized under various controlled polymerization techniques, such as ATRP, NMP, RAFT polymerization, or ROMP. Combining the functionalization of polymers via polymeric activated esters with these controlled polymerization techniques generate possibilities to realize highly functionalized polymer architectures. Within this highlight two different research areas of activated esters in polymer science will be discussed: (i) the preparation of defined reactive polymer architectures by controlled polymerization techniques and (ii) the preparation of defined reactive thin films. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis of Functional Inorganic−Organic Hybrid Polymers Based on Poly(silsesquioxanes) and Their Thin Film Properties

2008

New stable and adherent coating materials have been synthesized on the basis of inorganic/organic hybrid polymers. As the inorganic part, different poly(silsesquioxanes) (PSSQ) have been functionalized to act as polymeric chain transfer agents (CTAs) for a reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer polymerization, thereby determining the starting point of a controlled radical polymerization of vinyl-type monomers. Using two different CTAs acrylates, we have successfully polymerized methacrylates and styrene under RAFT polymerization conditions. Different monomers were copolymerized in such an organic block to incorporate multiple functionalities. The variation of the block ratios and …

Highly cross-linked imidazolium salt entrapped magnetic particles – preparation and applications

2012

Magnetic particles entrapped into highly cross-linked imidazolium salts were synthesized using a straightforward approach by radical polymerization of bis-vinylimidazolium salts in the presence of superparamagnetic iron oxide particles. Potential applications for these new materials as (i) catalysts for conversion of propylene oxide to propylene carbonate, (ii) supports for organocatalysts, and (iii) scavenger materials for palladium removal are outlined.

Redox active polymers with phenothiazine moieties for nanoscale patterning via conductive scanning force microscopy

2011

Redox active polymers with phenothiazine moieties have been synthesized by Atomic Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP). These novel polymers reveal bistable behaviour upon application of a bias potential above the oxidation threshold value. Using conductive Scanning Force Microscopy, two distinguishable conductivity levels were induced on a nanoscale level. These levels were related to a high conducting “On” and a low conducting “Off” state. The “On” state is generated by the oxidation of the phenothiazine side chains to form stable phenothiazine radical cations. The formation and stability of the radical sites was examined by cyclic voltammetry, electron spin resonance and optical spectr…

Main dielectric relaxation of poly(methyl acrylate)–polystyrene interpenetrating polymer networks

2005

Abstract Two series of poly(methyl acrylate)–polystyrene sequential interpenetrating polymer networks were prepared by free radical polymerization using ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate as cross-linking agent. In one of them the cross-linking density was very low and the IPNs presented phase separation. The main dielectric relaxation appears in the IPNs in the same position in the frequency axis and almost with the same shape as in the pure PMA network. Nevertheless the ratio of the relaxation strength to the weight fraction of PMA in the IPN decreases slightly with the increase of polystyrene content. The other series of IPNs were highly cross-linked, in these IPNs a dielectric relaxation sti…

Switching of Polymer Brushes

1999

Polymer coatings of brushlike monolayers composed of two different polymers, polystyrene and poly(2-vinylpyridine), are grafted by radical polymerization on the surface of silicon wafers. Thickness, grafting density, molecular weight of grafted chains, and the composition of the coatings were regulated by grafting time, monomer concentration, and additional initiator in solution. A typical dry film thickness is between 10 and 100 nm, and the molecular weights of the components range from 100 to 300 kg/mol. The fabricated coatings turn out to be sensitive to the composition of the environment. For instance after exposition to toluene the layer becomes hydrophobic and the top of the layer is …

Synthesis and large scale fractionation of non-linear polymers: brushes and hyperbranched polymers

2002

Polymer brushes with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) backbone and polystyrene side chains were synthesized by radical polymerization of ω-methacryloyl-polystyrene macromonomers. Hyperbranched PMMA was obtained by means of self-condensing group transfer copolymerization of methyl methacrylate with an initiator-monomer containing a polymerizable methacryloyl moiety and an initiating silylketeneacetal function. Both non-linear products were fractionated using the method of continuous polymer fractionation, consisting in a particular type of continuous countercurrent extraction. The combination of methyl ethyl ketone (solvent) with acetone (AC) (precipitant) turned out to be suitable for the f…

A new cross-linkable 9,10-diphenylanthracene derivative as a wide bandgap host for solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes

2018

Efficient organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) can be obtained using multilayered architectures where the processes of charge injection, transport and recombination are separated and optimized in each layer. Processing these structures from solution requires strategies to avoid redissolution or damage of the previously deposited layers. Several reports have demonstrated the development of cross-linkable hole transport materials, while less literature describes the synthesis and applications of such wide bandgap host materials for multilayered OLEDs. In this work we introduce a cross-linkable derivative of 9-(4-(10-phenylanthracene-9-yl)phenyl)-9H-carbazole incorporating styrene moieties (S…

Efficient Synthesis of High Molar Mass, First- to Fourth-Generation Distributed Dendronized Polymers by the Macromonomer Approach

2003

A homologous series of first- to fourth-generation (G1±G4) dendronized macromonomers, 5, 7, 10, and 12, was synthesized, and their poly- merization behavior under radical con- ditions investigated. These conditions were thermally induced radical poly- merization (TRP) and atom-transfer radical poymerization (ATRP). TRP was applied to all monomers and gave polymers PG1±PG4, whose molar masses range from several millions for PG1 to estimated several hundreds of thousands for PG2 and PG3, and to the oligomeric regime for PG4. ATRP was applied only to the G1 and G2 monomers 5 and 7. Kinetic studies on monomer 5 provide evidence that its polymerization proceeds in a control- led fashion. The hig…

Contribution of Protein Flexibility to the Foaming Properties of Casein

1990

The effect of biopolymer flexibility on the foaming properties of casein was investigated. Flexibility was altered by: (1) chemical modification (covalent binding of a monosaccharide on the lysyl residues) or (2) pH change. Electron Spin Resonance was used to measure the reorientational frequency of casein residues labeled with nitroxide radicals. High levels of glycosylation induced increased protein flexibility and improved the foaming capacity. Good agreement was observed between higher values of flexibility and improved surface properties near the isoelectric point.
