Mass mapping of a new area of neutron-deficient suburanium nuclides

Abstract The masses of 64 short-lived neutron-deficient nuclides covering the element range from tungsten to uranium have been obtained for the first time. They have been evaluated by combining directly measured masses from Schottky mass spectrometry with linked experimental Q-values in α-decay chains. Based on these new mass data we have determined the one-proton and two-proton drip-lines as well as the size of the “littoral shallow” of the sea of instability. No evidence of a Thomas–Ehrman shift has been found in the region of the investigated heavy nuclides. A peculiar behavior of two-proton separation energies has been observed in the lead region. Precise measurement of the K±→π±e+e− decay

Abstract A sample of 7253 K ± → π ± e + e − ( γ ) decay candidates with 1.0% background contamination has been collected by the NA48/2 experiment at the CERN SPS, which allowed a precise measurement of the decay properties. The branching ratio in the full kinematic range was measured to be BR = ( 3.11 ± 0.12 ) × 10 − 7 , where the uncertainty includes also the model dependence. The shape of the form factor W ( z ) , where z = ( M e e / M K ) 2 , was parameterized according to several models, and, in particular, the slope δ of the linear form factor W ( z ) = W 0 ( 1 + δ z ) was determined to be δ = 2.32 ± 0.18 . A new measurement of the K±→π±γγ decay at the NA48/2 experiment

Abstract The NA48/2 experiment at CERN collected two data samples with minimum bias trigger conditions in 2003 and 2004. A measurement of the rate and dynamic properties of the rare decay K ± → π ± γ γ from these data sets based on 149 decay candidates with an estimated background of 15.5 ± 0.7 events is reported. The model-independent branching ratio in the kinematic range z = ( m γ γ / m K ) 2 > 0.2 is measured to be B MI ( z > 0.2 ) = ( 0.877 ± 0.089 ) × 10 − 6 , and the branching ratio in the full kinematic range assuming a particular Chiral Perturbation Theory description to be B ( K π γ γ ) = ( 0.910 ± 0.075 ) × 10 − 6 .

Mirror decay of 75Sr

2003

The β-decay of 75Sr to its mirror nucleus 75Rb was studied at the ISOLDE PSB facility at CERN by means of β-delayed γ and proton spectroscopy. The decay Q-value and β-delayed γ intensity were measured for the first time. These results, 10.60±0.22 MeV and 4.5+1.9 -0.7%, together with accurate measurements of the β-decay half-life and β-delayed proton branching ratio yielded the Gamow-Teller strength 0.35±0.05 for the mirror transition. Implications of the results on studies of deformation effects and on the path of the rapid proton capture process are discussed.

Comparison of T[sub z] = ±1→0 GT Transitions

Gamow‐Teller (GT) transitions can be studied in both β‐decay and charge exchange(CE) reactions. If isospin is a good quantum number, then the Tz = −1→0 and Tz = +1→0 GT mirror transitions, are identical. Therefore, a comparison of the results from studies of β decay and CE should shed light on this assumption. Accordingly we have studied the β decay of the Tz = −1 fp‐shell nuclei, 54Ni, 50Fe, 46Cr, and 42Ti, produced in fragmentation and we have compared our results with the spectra from (3He, t) measurements on the mirror Tz = +1 target nuclei studied in high resolution at RCNP, Osaka. The β‐decay experiments were performed as part of the STOPPED beam RISING campaign at GSI.

First superheavy element experiments at the GSI recoil separator TASCA: The production and decay of element 114 in thePu244(Ca48,3-4n) reaction

Experiments with the new recoil separator, Transactinide Separator and Chemistry Apparatus (TASCA), at the GSI were performed by using beams of Ca-48 to irradiate targets of Pb206-208, which led to the production of No252-254 isotopes. These studies allowed for evaluation of the performance of TASCA when coupled to a new detector and electronics system. By following these studies, the isotopes of element 114 ((288-291)114) were produced in irradiations of Pu-244 targets with Ca-48 beams at compound nucleus excitation energies around 41.7 and 37.5 MeV, demonstrating TASCA's ability to perform experiments with picobarn-level cross sections. Experimental study ofβ-delayed proton decay ofAl23for nucleosynthesis in novae

The $\ensuremath{\beta}$-delayed $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and proton decay of $^{23}\mathrm{Al}$ has been studied with an alternative detector setup at the focal plane of the momentum achromat recoil separator MARS at Texas A University. We could detect protons down to an energy of 200 keV and determine the corresponding branching ratios. Contrary to results of previous $\ensuremath{\beta}$-decay studies, no strong proton intensity from the decay of the isobaric analog state (IAS) of the $^{23}\mathrm{Al}$ ground state at ${E}_{x}=7803$ keV in $^{23}\mathrm{Mg}$ was observed. Gamow-Teller Transitions Studied in ([sup 3]He, t) Reaction and Analogous β decay

Due to the simplicity of the στ operator that causes Gamow‐Teller (GT) transitions, they are the most popular nuclear weak process in the Universe. The GT transitions in pf‐shell nuclei, for example, starting from stable Tz = +1 and proton‐rich Tz = +1 nuclei, where Tz = (N−Z)/2, play important roles in the supernova‐explosion or rp‐process nucleosynthesis. In the β‐decay study of pf‐shell nuclei, half‐lives can be measured rather accurately. On the other hand, in a high‐resolution (3He, t) charge‐exchange reaction at 0°, individual GT transitions up to high excitations can be studied. Decay Spectroscopy for Nuclear Astrophysics: β-delayed Proton Decay

In several radiative proton capture reactions important in novae and XRBs, the resonant parts play the capital role. We use decay spectroscopy techniques to find these resonances and study their properties. We have developed techniques to measure beta- and beta-delayed proton decay of sd-shell, proton-rich nuclei produced and separated with the MARS recoil spectrometer of Texas A&M University. The short-lived radioactive species are produced in-flight, separated, then slowed down (from about 40 MeV/u) and implanted in the middle of very thin Si detectors.
