Production and Decay of Element 114: High Cross Sections and the New NucleusHs277

The fusion-evaporation reaction Pu-244(Ca-48, 3-4n)(288,289)114 was studied at the new gas-filled recoil separator TASCA. Thirteen correlated decay chains were observed and assigned to the production and decay of (288, 289)114. At a compound nucleus excitation energy of E* = 39.8-43.9 MeV, the 4n evaporation channel cross section was 9.8(-3.1)(+3.9) pb. At E* = 36.1-39.5 MeV, that of the 3n evaporation channel was 8.0-(+7.4)(4.5) pb. In one of the 3n evaporation channel decay chains, a previously unobserved alpha branch in (281)Ds was observed ( probability to be of random origin from background: 0.1%). This alpha decay populated the new nucleus (277)Hs, which decayed by spontaneous fission…

Beta-decay strength and isospin mixing studies in the sd and fp-shells

We have studied beta decays of MT<0 nuclei in sd and fp shells. The decay of 41Ti shows a large, 10(8) %, isospin mixing of IAS and the Gamow-Teller strength is observed to be quenched by a factor of q2=0.64. These results can be reproduced qualitatively in our shell model calculations. We have observed for the first time proton and gamma decay of the isobaric analogue state in 23Mg. Our results on the isospin mixing of the isobaric analogue state agrees well with the shell model calculations. The obtained proton branch of the IAS is used to extract the transition strength for the reaction 22Na(p,γ)23Mg.

Nucleosynthesis of proton-rich nuclei. Experimental results on the rp-process

Experience NSCL; International audience; We report in this study the nuclear properties of proton-rich isotopes located along the rp-process path. The experiments have recently been performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) at Michigan State University. The level properties above the proton separation energy of the nuclei 30S, 36K and 37Ca were measured with precision of < 10 keV. This will allow a reduction in the determination of the astrophysical (p, ) reaction rate under rp-process conditions.

Decay spectroscopy for nuclear astrophysics: β- and β-delayed proton decay

In several radiative proton capture reactions important in novae and XRBs, the resonant parts play the capital role. We use decay spectroscopy techniques to find these resonances and study their properties. We have developed techniques to measure beta- and beta-delayed proton decay of sd-shell, proton-rich nuclei produced and separated with the MARS recoil spectrometer of Texas A&M University. The short-lived radioactive species are produced in-flight, separated, then slowed down (from about 40 MeV/u) and implanted in the middle of very thin Si detectors. α-decay of the new isotopePo187: Probing prolate structures beyond the neutron mid-shell at N = 104

The new neutron-deficient isotope $^{187}\mathrm{Po}$ has been identified in the complete fusion reaction $^{46}\mathrm{Ti}$+$^{144}\mathrm{Sm}$\ensuremath{\rightarrow}$^{187}\mathrm{Po}$+$3n$ at the velocity filter SHIP. Striking features of the $^{187}\mathrm{Po}$ \ensuremath{\alpha} decay are the strongly-hindered decay to the spherical ground state and unhindered decay to a surprisingly low-lying deformed excited state at 286 keV in the daughter nucleus $^{183}\mathrm{Pb}$. Based on the potential energy surface calculations, the $^{187}\mathrm{Po}$ ground state and the 286 keV excited state in $^{183}\mathrm{Pb}$ were interpreted as being of prolate origin. New isomer and decay half-life ofRu115

Exotic, neutron-rich nuclei of mass $A=115$ produced in proton-induced fission of $^{238}\mathrm{U}$ were extracted using the IGISOL mass separator. The beam of isobars was transferred to the JYFLTRAP Penning trap system for further separation to the isotopic level. Monoisotopic samples of $^{115}\mathrm{Ru}$ nuclei were used for $\ensuremath{\gamma}$and $\ensuremath{\beta}$ coincidence spectroscopy. In $^{115}\mathrm{Ru}$ we have observed excited levels, including an isomer with a half-life of 76(6) ms and ($7/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}}$) spin and parity. The {sup 150}Nd({sup 3}He,t) reaction at 140 MeV/u and {sup 150}Sm(t,{sup 3}He) reaction at 115 MeV/u were measured, populating excited states in {sup 150}Pm. The transitions studied populate intermediate states of importance for the (neutrinoless) {beta}{beta} decay of {sup 150}Nd to {sup 150}Sm. Monopole and dipole contributions to the measured excitation-energy spectra were extracted by using multipole decomposition analyses. Nuclear structure of (231)Ac

The low-energy structure of 231Ac has been investigated by means of gamma ray spectroscopy following the beta-decay of 231Ra. Multipolarities of 28 transitions have been established by measuring conversion electrons with a mini-orange electron spectrometer. The decay scheme of 231Ra --> 231Ac has been constructed for the first time. The Advanced Time Delayed beta-gamma-gamma(t) method has been used to measure the half-lives of five levels. The moderately fast B(E1) transition rates derived suggest that the octupole effects, albeit weak, are still present in this exotic nucleus. Erratum to “Beta decay half-lives of neutron rich Ti–Co isotopes around N=40” [Nucl. Phys. A 660 (1999) 3–19]

Abstract The neutron-rich 57−59 Ti, 59−62 V, 61−64 Cr, 63−66 Mn, 65−68 Fe, 67−70 Co have been produced at GANIL via interactions of a 60.4 MeV/u 86 Kr 34+ with a 58 Ni target. They have been separated by the doubly achromatic spectrometer LISE3. Beta-decay half-lives have been determined for all produced nuclei, and subsequent γ -rays have been observed for the most efficiently produced nuclei. The measured half-lives of vanadium and chromium isotopes are compared to QRPA calculations using ground states deformations from the FRDM or ETFSI models. Inclusive eta photoproduction in nuclei.

A local model for the nuclear medium modifications to the photoproduction of \ensuremath{\eta} mesons through the ${\mathit{N}}^{\mathrm{*}}$(1535) resonance is applied to the study of the inclusive reaction in medium and heavy nuclei. The use of effective Lagrangians and many body quantum theory allows one to incorporate the nuclear decay channels of the ${\mathit{N}}^{\mathrm{*}}$ involving a pair of nucleons and Fermi sea effects. Also the \ensuremath{\eta}N final state interaction is considered, taking into account the nuclear renormalization of the \ensuremath{\eta}N scattering cross section, and assuming a classical propagation between collisions.
