Reduced oxytocin receptor gene expression and binding sites in different brain regions in schizophrenia: A post-mortem study
2016
Schizophrenia is a severe neuropsychiatric disorder with impairments in social cognition. Several brain regions have been implicated in social cognition, including the nucleus caudatus, prefrontal and temporal cortex, and cerebellum. Oxytocin is a critical modulator of social cognition and the formation and maintenance of social relationships and was shown to improve symptoms and social cognition in schizophrenia patients. However, it is unknown whether the oxytocin receptor is altered in the brain. Therefore, we used qRT-PCR and Ornithine Vasotocin Analog ([125I]OVTA)-based receptor autoradiography to investigate oxytocin receptor expression at both the mRNA and protein level in the left p…
Enormous hemangiosarcoma of the heart
1994
This report describes a 26-year-old patient with hemangiosarcoma of the heart and summarizes the clinicopathological features in previous reports of patients with cardiac angiosarcoma. The patient was admitted to our hospital because of a syncope and one episode of nocturnal dyspnea and hemoptysis. In his history he complained of progressive weakness and loss of weight over the past 2 months. Echocardiography and computed tomography of the chest showed inhomogeneous masses in the pericardial cavity completely surrounding the heart and involving the ascending aorta and the superior vena cava. Histological examination of the tissue obtained from the mass by fine needle technique revealed a po…
Immediately provisionalized OsseoSpeed(™) Profile implants inserted into extraction sockets: 3-year results.
2015
Objectives A sloped shoulder might improve the congruence between extraction socket and dental implant and may add to a better circumferential support of the peri-implant structures. Therefore, this study evaluates the 3-year clinical outcome (survival and success rates, marginal bone levels, and Pink Esthetic Score (PES)) of immediately inserted and provisionalized OsseoSpeed(™) Profile implants in the anterior maxilla. Material and methods Twenty-one implants were inserted in 16 patients. All implants were immediately placed into extraction sites with and without facial bone deficiencies. A flapless procedure was utilized, and the implants were provisionalized immediately. Facial gaps wer…
Evidence of Wallerian degeneration in normal appearing white matter in the early stages of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis
2003
Objective: Wallerian degeneration in normal appearing white matter in early relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), and its correlation with the number of relapses and disease duration. Background Recent pathological studies have demonstrated Wallerian degeneration in normal appearing white matter (NAWM) in multiple sclerosis (MS), in established RRMS, and in chronic MS. However, the presence of Wallerian degeneration early in the disease and its correlation with relapse and with disease duration has not been studied. Methods: We performed proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging in 21 MS patients, and 4 healthy controls, age and gender matched, aged under 45 years, with a max…
A novel minimally invasive, dorsolateral, tubular partial odontoidectomy and autologous bone augmentation to treat dens pseudarthrosis: cadaveric, 3D…
2017
OBJECTIVE The goal of this study was to demonstrate the clinical and technical nuances of a minimally invasive, dorsolateral, tubular approach for partial odontoidectomy, autologous bone augmentation, and temporary C1–2 fixation to treat dens pseudarthrosis. METHODS A cadaveric feasibility study, a 3D virtual reality reconstruction study, and the subsequent application of this approach in 2 clinical cases are reported. Eight procedures were completed in 4 human cadavers. A minimally invasive, dorsolateral, tubular approach for odontoidectomy was performed with the aid of a tubular retraction system, using a posterolateral incision and an oblique approach angle. Fluoroscopy and postprocedur…
Retrospective analysis of survival rates and marginal bone loss on short implants in the mandible
2011
Objectives: Short implants have become an interesting alternative to bone augmentation in dental implantology. Design of shorter implants and longer surveillance times are a current research issue. The goal of this study was to show the survival rates of short implants below 9 mm in the partly edentulous mandibular premolar and molar regions with fixed prosthetics. Marginal vertical and 2D bone loss was evaluated additionally. Different implant designs are orientationally evaluated. Material and Methods: A total of 247 dental implants with fixed prosthetics (crowns and bridges) in the premolar and molar region of the mandible were evaluated; 47 implants were 9 mm or shorter. Patient data we…
The evaluation of apicectomy without retrograde filling in terms of lesion size localization and approximation to the anatomic structures
2018
Background The purpose of this study was to evaluate of the patients who underwent apical resection. Besides assess the classification of resection side, localization, lesion size, approximation of anatomic structures and the purpose of the apical surgery retrospectively. Material and Methods In this stutdy 782 patients and 1191 apical resection applied tooth evaluated. 504 of the patients were famale and 278 were male. Patients age was between 13 and 76 years old and operated between January 2016 and January 2017. The study includes incisor, canine and premolar teeth which had the apical resection as the first time. Operation side evaluated from orthopantomograph and periapical radiographs…
Soft tissue pathosis associated with asymptomatic impacted lower third molars
2010
Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of pathological changes in the pericoronal tissue of asymptomatic impacted lower third molars and to assess the correlation between pathological changes and patient demographic, radiographic and morphological characteristics. Study Design: Follicles associated with fully impacted lower third molars were submitted for histological examiDesign: Follicles associated with fully impacted lower third molars were submitted for histological examiesign: Follicles associated with fully impacted lower third molars were submitted for histological examination after surgical extraction from 50 patients. The correlation between pathological c…
Estimation of the age of majority through radiographic evaluation of the third molar maturation degree
2020
Background Although the third molar is the tooth with the greatest anatomical and developmental variability, some authors consider it important to estimate whether a subject is of legal age or not. The Demirjian’s technique is the most widely used tool to estimate dental age and was therefore used in our study to assess possible correlation between the age of majority and the maturational degree of the lower third molars, evaluated through radiographic images. Material and Methods This observational transversal study was conducted on 180 panoramic radiographs from consecutive patients. The degree of maturation of the lower third molar was independently classified by two observers, according…
Marsupialization facilitates movement of the cystic lesion-associated deeply impacted mandibular third molar in spite of its mature roots
2017
Background: The odontogenic cystic lesions happened in the angle and ramus region are frequently associated with impacted mandibular third molars. The treatment plan was difficult to work out for the huge cystic lesions with deeply impacted third molars, since the enucleation with simultaneously removing the deeply impacted teeth may cause serious complications. Therefore, the marsupialization of the cystic lesions followed by enucleation with tooth removal has also been advocated. The aim of this study was to explore the movement of cystic lesion-associated deeply impacted mandibular third molars (IMTM) after marsupialization. Material and Methods: Between July 2009 and December 2015, pati…
