A decision analysis for periapical surgery : retrospective study

2018

Background Periapical surgery is now a reliable therapeutic procedure for the treatment of teeth with periapical lesions, particularly when orthograde retreatment is problematic. However, little information is available regarding treatment planning of cases referred for periapical surgery. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze and evaluate the factors that affect the decision-making process for periapical surgery. Material and Methods This study retrospectively assessed clinical and radiographic data from patients undergoing periapical surgery. The factors involved in deciding to perform periapical surgery were classified into technical, biological, and combined factors. Results Ou…

Decayed, missing, and restored teeth in patients with Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

2017

Background NF1 is a relatively frequently occurring autosomal dominant inherited disease. There are conflicting reports about oral health status in NF1. The aim of this study was to analyze the dental status of patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Material and methods Radiographs of 179 patients with NF1 were analyzed for decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) in a cross-sectional, retrospective study. The results were compared to age- and sex-matched controls of individuals not affected by NF1. The NF1 group was differentiated for facial tumor type and localization. Results Missing teeth were more frequently registered in the NF1 group. On the other hand, decayed teeth were mor…

Elongated styloid process evaluation on digital panoramic radiograph in a North Italian population

2017

Background The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of elongated styloid process in digital panoramic radiographs in a North Italian population in relation to age, gender and side. Material and methods This study was performed as a retrospective analysis on digital panoramic radiographs of 600 (271 males and 329 females) Italian patients between 6 and 87 years old. The styloid process length were measured using the measuring tool of Sidexis Software. It was measured from the point where it left the temporal bone plate to its tip. Styloid processes measuring more than 30 mm were considered elongated. Chi-squared and Fisher tests were used and the test is considered significant if …

Bilateral Bifid mandibular canals ? Special relevance for a general dental practitioner. Report of 2 cases

2019

Dental practitioners may encounter bifid mandibular canals upon radiographic assessment, and may not understand the true extent of this presentation. The presentation of a bifid mandibular canal poses difficulties when carrying out dental procedures, including administration of mandibular block anaesthesia, oral surgical procedures of the lower third molars, orthognathic surgery and implant placement. Therefore it is of paramount importance that general dental practitioners be aware of the radiographic appearance, as incorrect diagnosis of this rare presentation can lead to detrimental consequences. The purpose of the communication is to draw dental practitioner’s attention to the variation…

Bone loss around narrow implants versus standard diameter implants: Retrospective 2-years case-control study

2019

Background The objectives were to evaluate the bone loss (BL) around narrow diameter implants (3.3 mm) 2 years after implant loading and compare with the bone loss around conventional-diameter implants (4.1 mm), as well as with clinical and anatomical variables. 2-years follow-up. Material and Methods Cases: 20 patients either gender-age, narrow implants (Straumann TM-SLA, diameter 3.3 mm); Control: 20 patients matching for gender-age, conventional implants (Straumann TM-SLA, diameter 4.1). Total 82 implants (31 narrow implants and 51 conventional implants) in 40 patients. To avoid statistical bias, a cluster of one implant per patient was randomly selected (20 narrow implants and 20 conven…

Regenerative endodontic procedure combined with apical surgery of a necrotic permanent incisor with extensive periapical lesion using plasma rich in …

2021

Background The aim of this case report is to describe the step-by step and outcomes of a treatment approach which simultaneously combines a Regenerative Endodontic Procedure (REP) and apical surgery using PRGF as treatment of a post-traumatic necrotic permanent central incisor with extensive periapical lesion and undeveloped apex in a 16 years-old patient. Case description A 16 years-old patient with an extensive periapical lesion in the maxillary central incisor was treated with a combination of REP and periapical surgery in the same visit. A Bi- antibiotic paste (BAP) was used to priorly disinfect the canal, which was posteriorly sealed with MTA placed over a PRGF clot at the same time th…

Action in Perception: Prominent Visuo-Motor Functional Symmetry in Musicians during Music Listening.

2015

Musical training leads to sensory and motor neuroplastic changes in the human brain. Motivated by findings on enlarged corpus callosum in musicians and asymmetric somatomotor representation in string players, we investigated the relationship between musical training, callosal anatomy, and interhemispheric functional symmetry during music listening. Functional symmetry was increased in musicians compared to nonmusicians, and in keyboardists compared to string players. This increased functional symmetry was prominent in visual and motor brain networks. Callosal size did not significantly differ between groups except for the posterior callosum in musicians compared to nonmusicians. We conclude…

Arterial Embolism to the Upper Extremity in a Patient with Factor V Leiden Mutation (APC Resistance)

2003

Factor V Leiden mutation has emerged as one of the leading abnormalities in inherited blood coagulation disorders, resulting in a markedly increased risk for deep leg vein thrombosis. A 24- year-old woman presented with acute onset of critical ischemia of her left thumb and index finger. Intraarterial angiography revealed an embolus in the distal radial artery and a thrombotic occlusion of the digital artery of the thumb and index finger. Immediate therapy encompassed a selective surgical embolectomy of the distal radial artery followed by a local intraarterial lysis that was continued for 3 days. Additionally, therapeutic anticoagulation and vasodilating drugs (prostaglandin E) were admin…
