Unmixing of Polymer Blends Confined in Ultrathin Films: Crossover between Two-Dimensional and Three-Dimensional Behavior
2006
The interplay between chain conformations and phase separation in binary symmetric polymer mixtures confined into thin films by "neutral" hard walls (i.e., walls that do not preferentially attract or repel one of the two components of the mixture) is studied by Monte Carlo simulations. Using the bond fluctuation model on a simple cubic lattice in the semi grand canonical ensemble, we locate the critical temperature of demixing via finite size scaling methods for a wide range of chain lengths (16/= N/= 256 effective monomers per chain) and film thicknesses (2/= D/= 19 lattice spacings). Simultaneously, we investigate the geometrical structure of the chains, showing that despite using melt de…
Statistical properties of linear-hyperbranched graft copolymers prepared via "hypergrafting" of AB(m) monomers from linear B-functional core chains: …
2015
The reaction of ABm monomers (m = 2, 3) with a multifunctional Bf-type polymer chain ("hypergrafting") is studied by coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. The ABm monomers are hypergrafted using the slow monomer addition strategy. Fully dendronized, i.e., perfectly branched polymers are also simulated for comparison. The degree of branching of the molecules obtained with the "hypergrafting" process critically depends on the rate with which monomers attach to inner monomers compared to terminal monomers. This ratio is more favorable if the ABm monomers have lower reactivity, since the free monomers then have time to diffuse inside the chain. Configurational chain properties are also…
Determination of the conformation of polymers in the amorphous solid state and in concentrated solution by neutron diffraction
1975
Abstract From the coherent neutron scattering on dilute solid solutions of the ordinary polymer within the deuterated polymer, conformation parameters of polymer chains in amorphous solid states can be determined. In this way vitreous poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) has been investigated. The chains form unperturbed coils and the radius of gyration is very near to the corresponding value in dilute solutions of the same polymer in the low molecular θ-solvent butyl chloride. The same principle of measurement has been applied to concentrated solutions of PMMA in D-acetone. The solutions contained 50% polymer, the main part of which (98% and more) was deuterated so that the system was opticall…
Preparation and determination of the structure of high-performance polymer blends by small-angle neutron scattering
1995
Amorphous blends from a deuterated polyaryletherketone and a polyetherimide have been prepared and investigated by neutron scattering. The used components differ remarkably in their structure antheir solution properties. The blends on the other hand are combinatorial mixtures : the scattering quantity Φ 1 Φ 2 /S(q) is independent of the composition of the blends if the polymer chains have the same length
Reduction of the glass transition temperature in polymer films: A molecular-dynamics study
2001
We present results of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for a non-entangled polymer melt confined between two completely smooth and repulsive walls, interacting with inner particles via the potential $U_{\rm wall}\myeq (\sigma/z)^9$, where $z \myeq |z_{\rm particle}-z_{\rm wall}|$ and $\sigma$ is (roughly) the monomer diameter. The influence of this confinement on the dynamic behavior of the melt is studied for various film thicknesses (wall-to-wall separations) $D$, ranging from about 3 to about 14 times the bulk radius of gyration. A comparison of the mean-square displacements in the film and in the bulk shows an acceleration of the dynamics due to the presence of the walls. %Consistent…
Coil-Globule Collapse of Polystyrene Chains in Tetrahydrofuran-Water Mixtures.
2018
We study the coil and globule states of a single polymer chain in solution by performing molecular dynamics simulations with a united atom model. Specifically, we characterize the structural properties of atactic polystyrene chains with N = 20–150 monomers in tetrahydrofuran–water mixtures at varying mixing ratios. We find that the hydrophobic polymers form rather open coils when the mole fraction of water, XW, is roughly below 0.25, whereas the chains collapse into globules when XW ≳ 0.75. We confirm the theoretically expected scaling laws for the radius of gyration, Rg, in these regimes, i.e., Rg ∝ N3/5 and Rg ∝ N1/3 for good and poor solvent conditions, respectively. For poor solvent con…
Glassy dynamics of simulated polymer melts: Coherent scattering and van Hove correlation functions
2001
Whereas the first part of this paper dealt with the relaxation in the β-regime, this part investigates the final relaxation (α-relaxation) of a simulated polymer melt consisting of short non-entangled chains in the supercooled state above the critical temperature of ideal mode-coupling theory (MCT). The temperature range covers the onset of a two-step relaxation behaviour down to a temperature merely 2% above . We monitor the incoherent intermediate scattering function as well as the coherent intermediate scattering function of both a single chain and the melt over a wide range of wave numbers q. Upon approaching the coherent α-relaxation time of the melt increases strongly close to the max…
Molecular characterization of α , β -poly(asparthylhydrazide) a new synthetic polymer for biomedical applications
1999
Abstract α , β -Poly(asparthylhydrazide) (PAHy) is a new synthetic polymer that exhibits interesting properties and is a candidate for biomedical applications. In this article the characterization of PAHy polymer by multi-angle laser light scattering (MALS) and single-capillary viscometer (SCV) detectors on-line to a size exclusion chromatography (SEC) system is reported. The SEC–MALS–SCV system furnishes exhaustive and consistent characterization of the PAHy polymer. Further, it is possible to characterize the PAHy polymer through conventional SEC and universal calibration. The universal calibration method gives intrinsic viscosity and dispersity very close to those measured by the absolut…
Cylindrical polyelectrolyte-comb-surfactant complexes
2006
Abstract Quaternized polymer combs based on poly(2-vinylpyridine-macromonomers) and the surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate are employed in the synthesis of a novel cylindrical polyelectrolyte-comb-surfactant complex (PECSC). The complex formed has 1:1 stoichiometry with respect to the ratio of dodecylsulfate to pyridinium units. It is soluble in organic solvents such as 2-butanol or chloroform. Characterization of single particle properties of the complex in organic solution is possible and yields a radius of gyration of 〈Rg〉z = 78.4 nm, a hydrodynamic radius of 〈1/Rh〉z−1 = 51.4 nm and a cross-sectional radius of Rg,cross = 3.9 nm in chloroform. The characteristic ratio γ = 〈Rg〉z/〈1/Rh〉z−1 de…
One- and two-component bottle-brush polymers: simulations compared to theoretical predictions
2007
Scaling predictions and results from self-consistent field calculations for bottle-brush polymers with a rigid backbone and flexible side chains under good solvent conditions are summarized and their validity and applicability is assessed by a comparison with Monte Carlo simulations of a simple lattice model. It is shown that under typical conditions, as they are also present in experiments, only a rather weak stretching of the side chains is realized, and then the scaling predictions based on the extension of the Daoud-Cotton blob picture are not applicable. Also two-component bottle brush polymers are considered, where two types (A,B) of side chains are grafted, assuming that monomers of …
