From the Metropolitan Areas to the Post-metropolitan Dimension

This chapter introduces a description of the two main areas that will be discussed throughout the book: the metropolitan region of Palermo and South-Eastern Sicily. The chapter starts with a socio-economic analysis describing the characteristics of demography, employment and income in these two parts of Sicily, by comparing them to the situation of other areas in Italy. A spatial analysis of housing and land use complements the socio-economic outlook. Each section describes the most consolidated trends in these areas, but also discusses the most innovative changes and the challenges Sicily has been facing over the years.

Purpose This research attempts to make sense of the experiences of two academic women who become mothers. Design/methodology/approach This paper is an autoethnography. Applying the autoethnographic method allows us to discuss cultural phenomena through personal reflections and experiences. Our autoethnographic reflections illustrate our struggles and attempts of resistance within discursive spaces where motherhood and our identity as academics intersect. Findings Our personal experiences combined with theoretical elaborations illuminate how the role of the mother continues to be dominated by such gendered discursive practices that conflict with the work role. Pēcoperācijas ātriju fibrilācija (POĀF) ir biežākā komplikācija pacientiem, kuriem veikta operācija uz atvērtas sirds. Kā rezultātā tā ietekmē morbiditāti, mortalitāti, kā arī palielina finansiālas izmaksas. Pētījuma mērķis ir uzzināt vai ir korelācija starp veiktiem pirms operācijas standarta izmeklējuma rezultātiem un pēcoperācijas ātriju fibrilāciju. Jo nosakot augsta riska pacientu var uzsākt preventīvu ārstēšanu. Materiāli un metodes: retrospektīvs pētījums, kur tika iekļauti pacienti, kam veikta sirds operācija ar sternotomijas pieeju, kuriem pirms operācijas bija sīnusa ritms n = 111. 39 pacienti netika iekļauti pētījumā, jo pirms operācijas bija ātriju fibrilācija vai anamnēzē ātrij…

Endometrial decidualization is critical for pregnancy establishment and maintenance. This process promotes endometrial remodeling allowing placental cytotrophoblasts (CTBs) invasion up to an appropriate depth to form the maternal-fetal interface. A shallow CTBs invasion compromises healthy pregnancy and it is associated with the development of severe preeclampsia (sPE). Our working hypothesis is that defective decidualization impairs the adaptation of the maternal “soil” ─the decidua─ to be invaded by CTBs and plays a pivotal role in the etiology of sPE. Starting from the concept of "risk" and opposing it with that of "hazard", the text introduces the investigation work and the interactive proposals developed during and following the experience of the "Laboratorio del Cammino" which in 2021 crossed the shrinking territories of the Turin and Biella provinces.

L’attività di ricerca in corso riguarda la possibilità di ricavare dati clinicamente significativi dai segnali ottici PPG (PhotoPletysmoGraphy). Il segnale PPG viene utilizzato per ricavare informazioni sul volume e sulla saturazione del sangue che interessa il distretto illuminato dalla luce IR (infrarosso) usata per l’analisi. Il volume di sangue contenuto nel segmento di arteria esaminato dipende dalla pressione e dal ciclo cardiaco, attraverso la rigidità dell’arteria.
