Cessation of Cerebral Blood Flow in Total Irreversible Loss of Brain Function
1969
After the demonstration, by our group [3, 4], that in cases of so-called “cerebral death” there is an absence of clearance from the brain of 133Xe selectively injected into the internal carotid artery, further attention was dedicated to establish possible sources of error in this technique.
Relationship between Diabetes and Ischemic Stroke: Analysis of Diabetes- Related Risk Factors for Stroke and of Specific Patterns of Stroke Associate…
2015
Diabetes and ischemic stroke are common diseases that frequently occurring together. Among patients with diabetes mellitus several factors contribute in varying degrees to the overall cerebrovascular risk including hyperglycemia, vascular risk factors such as hypertension and dyslipidemia and also genetic, demographic, and lifestyle factors and several studies have shown that people with diabetes have approximately twice the risk of ischemic stroke compared with those without diabetes. The association between ischemic stroke and diabetes is bidirectional and it is not limited to acute ischemic stroke since diabetes may contribute to a more insidious brain damage represented by lacunar infar…
When to use frovatriptan in migraine? A reply
2011
Dear Sir, We read with interest the comments of Dr. Tfelt-Hansen [1] on the two recently published randomized controlled trials comparing patients’ preference (primary end-point) and efficacy (secondary end-points) of frovatriptan with respect to rizatriptan [2] and almotriptan [3]. In both studies, frovatriptan showed similar preference and short-term efficacy outcomes (pain relief and pain free episodes at 2 h) with respect to the other two triptans. The principal concern of Dr. Tfelt-Hansen was the very early use of frovatriptan in these studies, making their results hardly comparable with those of previous randomized controlled trials [4–6], where patients waited until the headache was …
Suggested randomized, controlled trial for frovatriptan: a reply
2011
Dear Sir, We read with interest the comments of Dr. Tfelt-Hansen [1] regarding our three recently published randomized controlled trials comparing patients’ preference (primary endpoint) and efficacy (secondary endpoints) of frovatriptan 2.5 mg versus zolmitriptan 2.5 mg [2], rizatriptan 10 mg [3] and almotriptan 12.5 mg [4], and the meta-analysis of pooled individual data from the three studies [5]. In all studies frovatriptan showed similar preference and short-term efficacy outcomes (pain relief and pain-free episodes at 2 h) with respect to the other three triptans. The questions put by Dr. Tfelt-Hansen sound appropriate. Doubts are raised on the usefulness of head-to-head preference tr…
Effects of long-term lifestyle and high-intensity interval training intervention on blood pressure reduction in patients with abdominal obesity
2013
Purpose: The aims of this study were: 1) to study the impact of a combined long-term lifestyle and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) intervention on blood pressure (BP) in patients with abdominal obesity; 2) To document BP reduction responses according to the European Society of Hypertension BP classification. Methods: 105 patients with abdominal obesity (age: 53±10 yrs; 32 men; waist circumference (WC): 112±13cm; systolic/diastolic (SBP/DBP): 133±13/82±8 mmHg; 11% diabetics, 11% smokers, 68% with antihypertensive therapy) were retrospectively analyzed before and after a combined long-term lifestyle and HIIT program twice a week. Anthropometric measurements, cardiometabolic risk facto…
Innovative Educational Pathways in Spine Surgery: Advanced Virtual Reality–Based Training
2020
Background Over the past few years, a reorganization of the educational pathways has been promoted with the purpose of optimizing the acquisition of competences and their assessment, so as to reduce the risks to both health care professionals and end users. Virtual reality (VR) has been repeatedly tested, initially as a positive reinforcement for more traditional educational pathways and, more recently, as their potential substitute. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the potentiality of VR simulation training in spine surgery. Methods The VR simulator reproduced the lateral lumbar access to the spine. The simulation included a tutorial, the preoperative settings, and the surgical ses…
Consensus document on community-acquired pneumonia in children. SENP-SEPAR-SEIP
2020
Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a prevalent disease among children and is frequently associated with both diagnostic and therapeutic uncertainties. Consensus has been reached between SEPAR, SENP and SEIP, and their conclusions are as follows.
