Abstract Crystalline ZrO2 nanoparticles were prepared from zirconium isopropoxide by slow hydrolysis and subsequent hydrothermal treatment of solutions containing various amounts of sodium hydroxide at 180 °C. Whereas moderately basic solutions lead to the formation of nanoparticles of monoclinic ZrO2 with plate-like morphology, and nanoparticles of the cubic ZrO2 high-temperature polymorph with diameters of approx. 5 nm were obtained from strongly basic solutions. Ultrafast stimulated Raman parallel adiabatic passage by shaped pulses

We present a general and versatile technique of population transfer based on {\it parallel adiabatic passage} by femtosecond shaped pulses. Their amplitude and phase are specifically designed to optimize the adiabatic passage corresponding to parallel eigenvalues at all times. We show that this technique allows the robust adiabatic population transfer in a Raman system with the total pulse area as low as 3 $\pi$, corresponding to a fluence of one order of magnitude below the conventional stimulated Raman adiabatic passage process. The determination of the size and the size distribution of anatase TiO2 nanopowders using Raman spectroscopy is presented. Several synthesis methods (soft chemistry, water-in-oil microemulsion, continuous hydrothermal synthesis) are used in order to control the size (from 3 to 20 nm), shape, phase and size distribution. The shift and width of the anatase Eg peak are often used to obtain the nanoparticles size. Homever, this peak is also sensitive to nonstoichiometry and others parameters. Inhomogeneous speed effects on H-2 vibrational line profiles in ternary mixtures

International audience; A study of speed inhomogeneous broadening of the hydrogen vibrational line profiles in the collisional regime for ternary mixtures is reported. The Q(1) line of H-2 in H-2-Ar-N-2, H-2-He-Ar, and H-2-He-N-2 mixtures is investigated by high resolution stimulated Raman spectroscopy for various concentrations and temperatures. A model, successfully used for binary mixtures, is extended to ternary mixtures. An excellent agreement is obtained between theory and experiment for H-2-Ar-N-2, by using the collisional parameters previously obtained from binary mixtures study. Suppression of plasma contribution in femtosecond degenerate four-wave mixing (fs-DFWM) at high intensity

Femtosecond degenerate four-wave mixing (fs-DFWM) experiments in CO2 exhibit a strong background due to plasma produced at high intensity (≥20 TW/cm2), when significant molecular alignment is likely to arise. This perturbing phenomenon renders the measurements of alignment very difficult. It is shown that the plasma contribution can be avoided by employing perpendicular polarizations for the two pump pulses. The effect is explained on the basis of the different diffraction angles between signals produced by molecular alignment and plasma. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
Real time measurement of long parabolic optical similaritons

International audience; Long optical similaritons using a Raman fibre amplifier are generated. These pulses, with a highly parabolic profile, are monitored in real time on a high speed oscilloscope. Tunability of both the temporal and spectral widths of the pulses is then investigated.
Collisional effects on spectral line shape from the Doppler to the collisional regime: A rigorous test of a unified model

International audience; The paper presents high resolution Raman investigations of the Q(1) line of H-2 in Ar mixture from low density (Doppler regime) to high density (collisional regime) analyzed with a unique line shape profile. Measurements are performed by stimulated Raman gain spectroscopy between 300 and 1000 K in a wide density range (from 0.2 to 11 amagat). All the observed spectral features are accurately described by a unified model recently proposed by two of the authors. Supercontinuum generation by cascaded intermodal Raman and FWM processes in step-index few-mode fibers

Line coupling in Anisotropic Raman Branches

Direct connection between collisional Raman cross sections and state‐to‐state rotational ones permits, within the sudden approximation, to evidence drastic decouplings from isotropic to anisotropic lines. These decouplings are consistent with the results obtained by using the strong collision model. Convenient energy corrections to the sudden approximation are used for N2 to calculate the resulting effects on the isotropic and anisotropic Q‐branch profiles in a large density range (several hundred bars). Raman investigation of the drawing effects on Ge-doped fibers

International audience; We have investigated the Raman activity of various germanosilicate fibers and their associated preforms. Our data indicate an enhancement in small rings' (3-member rings) concentration in the silica-based matrix of the fibers during the drawing process. The generation of such rings appears compatible with an increase of the sample density and fictive temperature. The data regarding the drawing effects on the fiber stress appear less clear, and it is possible to suggest that in some cases the drawing could lower the tensile stress.
