Integrable systems, Frobenius manifolds and cohomological field theories

2022

In this dissertation, we study the underlying geometry of integrable systems, in particular tausymmetric bi-Hamiltonian hierarchies of evolutionary PDEs and differential-difference equations.First, we explore the close connection between the realms of integrable systems and algebraic geometry by giving a new proof of the Witten conjecture, which constructs the string taufunction of the Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy via intersection theory of the moduli spaces of stable curves with marked points. This novel proof is based on the geometry of double ramification cycles, tautological classes whose behavior under pullbacks of the forgetful and gluing maps facilitate the computation of intersection…

Cluster growth with long-range interactions

1996

Abstract Growth models in which the morphology depends on interactions of the type V(r) = C r n are presented. The growth algorithms are generalizations of DLA. The particles diffuse on a triangular lattice and eventually either stick to the cluster or are lost. Several processes are simulated in this way: in one case only pure sticking is taken into account, in another case evaporation and rearrangement are also allowed to occur. In the former case (with attractive interactions) the clusters exhibit a highly symmetric shape (a sixfold star) whose detailed structure depends on n , C kT , and time. In the latter case (studied with repulsive dipolar interactions) the tendency to ramification …

Understanding Prediction Limits Through Unbiased Branches

2006

The majority of currently available branch predictors base their prediction accuracy on the previous k branch outcomes. Such predictors sustain high prediction accuracy but they do not consider the impact of unbiased branches which are difficult-to-predict. In this paper, we quantify and evaluate the impact of unbiased branches and show that any gain in prediction accuracy is proportional to the frequency of unbiased branches. By using the SPECcpu2000 integer benchmarks we show that there are a significant proportion of unbiased branches which severely impact on prediction accuracy (averaging between 6% and 24% depending on the prediction context used).

Ramification of lithic production and the search of small tools in Iberian Peninsula Middle Paleolithic

2015

The notion of recycling and it relationship with ramified productions and small tool production in Late Middle Paleolithic from the Iberian Peninsula are investigated. Results from Amalda, Axlor, Pen~a Miel, and Quebrada show that the production of small tools is one of the principal objectives of lithic provi- sioning in these sites. Whereas in Axlor and Amalda, this is achieved through the ramification of pro- duction, due to the remoteness of flint sources, in Quebrada, where raw material sources are closer, small flakes are obtained at the end of Levallois production. The implications for Neandertal society organi- zation of this small tool production is discussed, and its evolution is …
