Current Concepts in Therapy of Chronic Rhinosinusitis and Nasal Polyposis
2004
The exact pathophysiological mechanisms leading to chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) still to a large extent remain obscure. However, recently there has been some progress in elucidating the etiology of nasal polyposis, especially regarding tissue eosinophilia as well as the role of aspirin intolerance and eicosanoid mediators. Endonasal sinus surgery has evolved to be the treatment of choice in CRS and nasal polyposis in all cases where conservative treatment has failed or resulted in only a partial or temporary relief. Today, state of the art in surgical technique includes the ability to combine microscopic and endoscopic procedures. Regardless of technical advances like powered instrumentatio…
Role of virtopsy in the post-mortem diagnosis of drowning.
2014
Purpose: Due to admitted limits of autopsy-based studies in the diagnosis of drowning, virtopsy is considered the new imaging horizon in these post-mortem studies. The aim of our study was to evaluate the role of virtopsy performed through computed tomography (CT) in the forensic diagnosis of drowning. Materials and methods: We retrospectively examined the CT data of four cadavers recovered from sea water and suspected to have died by drowning. Each patient underwent a full-body post-mortem CT scan, and then a traditional autopsy. Conclusion: To date, there are no autopsy findings pathognomonic of drowning. This study proves that virtopsy is a useful tool in the diagnosis of drowning in tha…
Removal of fungal ball from the jaws by lefort i osteotomy: Difficulty in diagnosing patients with chronic sinusitis
2021
Aspergillosis, aka fungal ball (FB), is classified as a type of non-invasive fungal rhinosinusitis, which usually occurs unilaterally in the maxillary sinus of an immunocompromised patient. Its diagnosis is complex and depends on the association between clinical, imaging, and histopathological exams. There are many treatments for fungal infections of the paranasal sinuses, so early diagnosis is extremely important to determine the appropriate treatment. This paper reports an unusual clinical case of aspergillosis present bilaterally inside the maxillary sinuses of a healthy patient, associated with mucous retention cysts, whose imaging exams and transnasal endoscopy were not sufficient to p…

Fructose 2,6-bisphosphate and glycolytic flux in skeletal muscle of swimming frog
1990
AbstractGlycolytic flux in skeletal muscle is controlled by 6-phosphofructokinase but how this is achieved is controversial. Brief exercise (swimming) in frogs caused a dramatic increase in the phosphofructokinase activator, fructose 2,6-bisphosphate, in working muscle. The kinetics of phosphofructokinase suggest that in resting muscle, the enzyme is inhibited by ATP plus citrate and that the increase in fructose 2,6-bisphosphate is part of the mechanism to activate phosphofructokinase when exercise begins. When exercise was sustained, fructose 2,6-bisphosphate in muscle was decreased as was the rate of lactate accumulation. Glycolytic flux and the content of fructose 2,6-bisphosphate appea…
1997
PURPOSE To investigate the clinical necessity of CT of the paranasal sinuses before bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cell transplantation. PATIENTS AND METHODS 80 patients with malignant disease underwent coronal CT of the paranasal sinuses prior to transplantation to exclude sinusitis. RESULTS CT revealed sinusitis requesting therapy in 17/80 patients (21%). Patients with leukaemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma were significantly more affected. Chronic sinusitis was found in two patients, mucosal swelling not requesting therapy in 22, and normal findings in 39. CONCLUSION CT of the paranasal sinuses is advised in patients suffering haemoblastoses with an increased risk of infectious complic…
An Assessment of Radiologic Discrepancies in Patients with Paranasal Sinus Disease
1992
The importance of computerized tomographic (CT) imaging of the paranasal sinuses in patients with chronic or recurring sinusitis is well documented. Nevertheless, the accuracy and reliability of this examination is not absolute. In this study of 80 cases, a considerable percentage of CT scans (57.5%) failed to detail accurately the extent of pathology in the sinus cavities. In 39 cases the extent of disease was underestimated using CT, and in seven cases it was overestimated. Discrepancies in pathology were encountered most commonly in the posterior ethmoid sinus. In our opinion, the primary role of CT in the assessment of patients with paranasal sinus disease is to detail precisely the co…
