Effects of HIV, antiretroviral therapy and prebiotics on the active fraction of the gut microbiota

In a recent blinded randomized study, we found that in HIV-infected individuals a short supplementation with prebiotics (scGOS/lcFOS/glutamine) ameliorates dysbiosis of total gut bacteria, particularly among viremic untreated patients. Codominance of Lactobacillus plantarum and obligate heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria during sourdough fermentation

Fifteen sourdoughs produced in western Sicily (southern Italy) were analysed by classical methods for their chemico-physical characteristics and the levels of lactic acid bacteria (LAB). pH and total titratable acidity (TTA) were mostly in the range commonly reported for similar products produced in Italy, but the fermentation quotient (FQ) of the majority of samples was above 4.0, due to the low concentration of acetic acid estimated by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). A taxonomic survey of lactic acid bacteria isolated from wheat (Triticum durum) kernels and non-conventional flours

In order to explore the correspondence between raw material- and mature sourdough-lactic acid bacterial (LAB) communities, 59 Italian wheat (Triticum durum) grain samples, one bran and six non-conventional flour samples were analyzed through a culture-dependent approach. The highest cell count by an agar medium specific for LAB was 2.16 log CFU/g. From about 2300 presumptive LAB (Gram-positive and catalase-negative) colonies collected, a total of 356 isolates were subjected to identification by a genetic polyphasic strategy consisting of RAPD-PCR analysis, partial 16S rRNA gene sequencing, species-specific and multiplex PCRs. Virulence and Molecular Typing of Vibrio harveyi Strains Isolated from Cultured Dentex, Gilthead Sea Bream and European Sea Bass

Vibrio harveyi was isolated from internal organs or ulcers of diseased and apparently healthy gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) and European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) cultured in several fish farms located on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. The prevalence of the bacterium was significantly higher in European sea bass than in gilthead sea bream, and was closely related to the season in both fish species, occurring almost exclusively on warm months (June to November). Lactobacillus aquaticus sp. nov., isolated from a Korean freshwater pond.

A Lactobacillus strain, IMCC1736T, was isolated recently from a Korean freshwater pond following an extensive study of the microbial community in this ecosystem. Its 16S rRNA gene was sequenced and phylogenetic analysis placed this strain within the Lactobacillus salivarius group, closely related to Lactobacillus satsumensis NRIC 0604T, with 97.9% sequence similarity. In the present work, the taxonomic status of strain IMCC1736T has been re-evaluated. ABSTRACT The main hypothesis of this work was to evaluate the presence of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) intrinsically resistant to plant essential oils in sage (Salvia officinalis L.) and laurel (Laurus nobilis), for future applications in functional cheese production by addition of aromatic herbs. The effect of the drying process on the viability of LAB was evaluated with three biomass densities (3, 4 and 5 kg/m2). The drying densities did not affect weight loss, but influenced the levels of LAB of sage and laurel. Polyphasic study of wine Lactobacillus strains: taxonomic implications

One hundred and seventy-eight lactobacilli isolated from wine were characterized by a polyphasic approach. Strains were phenotypically identified at genus and species level by classical tests including the analysis of cell morphology, homo/heterofermentative character, sugar fermentation patterns, growth at different temperatures and the optical nature of the isomer of lactic acid produced from glucose. Lactobacillus sicerae sp. nov., a lactic acid bacterium isolated from Spanish natural cider

Strains CUPV261T and CUPV262 were isolated from ropy natural ciders of the Basque Country, Spain, in 2007. Cells are Gram-stain positive, non-spore-forming, motile rods, facultative anaerobes and catalase-negative. The strains are obligately homofermentative (final product dl-lactate) and produce exopolysaccharides from sucrose.
