Lactobacillus oeni sp. nov., from wine.

2009

Ten Lactobacillus strains, previously isolated from different Bobal grape wines from the Utiel-Requena Origin Denomination of Spain, were characterized phylogenetically, genotypically and phenotypically. The 16S rRNA genes were sequenced and phylogenetic analysis showed that they form a tight phylogenetic clade that is closely related to reference strains Lactobacillus satsumensis NRIC 0604T, ‘Lactobacillus uvarum’ 8 and Lactobacillus mali DSM 20444T. DNA–DNA hybridization results confirmed the separation of the strains from other Lactobacillus species. Genotypically, the strains could be differentiated from their closest neighbours by 16S amplified rDNA restriction analysis and random ampl…

Engineering of a bacterial tyrosinase for improved catalytic efficiency towards D-tyrosine using random and site directed mutagenesis approaches

2013

The tyrosinase gene from Ralstonia solanacearum (GenBank NP518458) was subjected to random mutagenesis resulting in tyrosinase variants (RVC10 and RV145) with up to 3.2-fold improvement in kcat, 5.2-fold lower Km and 16-fold improvement in catalytic efficiency for D-tyrosine. Based on RVC10 and RV145 mutated sequences, single mutation variants were generated with all variants showing increased kcat for D-tyrosine compared to the wild type (WT). All single mutation variants based on RV145 had a higher kcat and Km value compared to the RV145 and thus the combination of four mutations in RV145 was antagonistic for turnover, but synergistic for affinity of the enzyme for D-tyrosine. Single muta…

Use of nodulation pattern, stress tolerance, nodC gene amplification, RAPD-PCR and RFLP-16S rDNA analysis to discriminate genotypes of Rhizobium legu…

2005

Twenty-seven new Rhizobium isolates were obtained from root nodules of wild and crop legumes belonging to the genera Vicia, Lathyrus and Pisum from different agroecological areas in central and southern Italy. A polyphasic approach including phenotypic and genotypic techniques was used to study their diversity and their relationships with other biovars and species of rhizobia. Analysis of symbiotic properties and stress tolerance tests revealed that wild isolates, showed a wide spectrum of nodulation and a marked variation in stress tolerance compared with reference strains tested in this study. All rhizobial isolates (except for the isolate CG4 from Galega officinalis) were presumptively i…

Identification and typing of food-borne Staphylococcus aureus by PCR-based techniques.

2005

Abstract The possibility of using PCR for rapid identification of food-borne Staphylococcus aureus isolates was evaluated as an alternative to the API-Staph system. A total of 158 strains, 15 S. aureus , 12 other staphylococcal species, and 131 isolates recovered from 164 food samples were studied. They were phenotypically characterized by API-Staph profiles and tested for PCR amplification with specific primers directed to thermonuclease ( nuc ) and enterotoxin ( sea to see ) genes. Disagreement between the PCR results and API-Staph identification was further assessed by the analysis of randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) profiles obtained with three universal primers (M13, T3, and T…

Anomalous transport effects on switching currents of graphene-based Josephson junctions

2017

We explore the effect of noise on the ballistic graphene-based small Josephson junctions in the framework of the resistively and capacitively shunted model. We use the non-sinusoidal current-phase relation specific for graphene layers partially covered by superconducting electrodes. The noise induced escapes from the metastable states, when the external bias current is ramped, give the switching current distribution, i.e. the probability distribution of the passages to finite voltage from the superconducting state as a function of the bias current, that is the information more promptly available in the experiments. We consider a noise source that is a mixture of two different types of proce…

Forest of Normalized Trees: Fast and Accurate Density Estimation of Streaming Data

2018

Density estimation of streaming data is a relevant task in numerous domains. In this paper, a novel non-parametric density estimator called FRONT (forest of normalized trees) is introduced. It uses a structure of multiple normalized trees, segments the feature space of the data stream through a periodically updated linear transformation and is able to adapt to ever evolving data streams. FRONT provides accurate density estimation and performs favorably compared to existing online density estimators in terms of the average log score on multiple standard data sets. Its low complexity, linear runtime as well as constant memory usage, makes FRONT by design suitable for large data streams. Final…

"Table 4" of "Measurement of dielectron production in central Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{{\textit{s}}_{\mathrm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 TeV"

2018

Data-to-cocktail ratio as a function of the invariant-mass. In the hadronic cocktail, random correlations of dielectrons from charm decays are assumed to simulate the effects of the interaction between charm quarks and the medium. The statistical and systematic uncertainties of data are represented by vertical bars and boxes.

The short-term efficacy and safety of artificial total disc replacement for selected patients with lumbar degenerative disc disease compared with ant…

2018

PurposeTo systematically compare the efficacy and safety of lumbar total disc replacement (TDR) with the efficacy and safety of anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) for the treatment of lumbar degenerative disc disease (LDDD).MethodsThe electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library were searched for the period from the establishment of the databases to March 2018. The peer-reviewed articles that investigate the safety and efficacy of TDR and ALIF were retrieved under the given search terms. Quality assessment must be done independently by two authors according to each item of criterion. The statistical analyses were performed using RevMan (version 5.3) and Stata (v…

A dynamic integration algorithm for an ensemble of classifiers

1999

Numerous data mining methods have recently been developed, and there is often a need to select the most appropriate data mining method or methods. The method selection can be done statically or dynamically. Dynamic selection takes into account characteristics of a new instance and usually results in higher classification accuracy. We discuss a dynamic integration algorithm for an ensemble of classifiers. Our algorithm is a new variation of the stacked generalization method and is based on the basic assumption that each basic classifier is best inside certain subareas of the application domain. The algorithm includes two main phases: a learning phase, which collects information about the qua…

Probabilistic Logic under Coherence, Model-Theoretic Probabilistic Logic, and Default Reasoning

2001

We study probabilistic logic under the viewpoint of the coherence principle of de Finetti. In detail, we explore the relationship between coherence-based and model-theoretic probabilistic logic. Interestingly, we show that the notions of g-coherence and of g-coherent entailment can be expressed by combining notions in model-theoretic probabilistic logic with concepts from default reasoning. Crucially, we even show that probabilistic reasoning under coherence is a probabilistic generalization of default reasoning in system P. That is, we provide a new probabilistic semantics for system P, which is neither based on infinitesimal probabilities nor on atomic-bound (or also big-stepped) probabil…
