Random vibration of linear and nonlinear structural systems with singular matrices: A frequency domain approach

2017

Abstract A frequency domain methodology is developed for stochastic response determination of multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) linear and nonlinear structural systems with singular matrices. This system modeling can arise when a greater than the minimum number of coordinates/DOFs is utilized, and can be advantageous, for instance, in cases of complex multibody systems where the explicit formulation of the equations of motion can be a nontrivial task. In such cases, the introduction of additional/redundant DOFs can facilitate the formulation of the equations of motion in a less labor intensive manner. Specifically, relying on the generalized matrix inverse theory, a Moore-Penrose (M-P) based f…

Selenium bio-enrichment of Mediterranean fruit juices through lactic acid fermentation.

2021

Abstract This work was carried out to elaborate selenium (Se) bio-enriched fermented Mediterranean fruit juices. To this purpose, pomegranate and table red grape juices were added with sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) and fermented by Levilactobacillus brevis CRL 2051 and Fructobacillus tropaeoli CRL 2034 individually or combined. To better evaluate the effect of selenite addition and starter strain inoculums on the total bacterial community of the fruit juices, fermentation trials were performed with raw and pasteurized fruit juices. No statistical significant differences were observed for total mesophilic microorganisms (TMM) and rod-shaped lactic acid bacteria (LAB) levels among raw and pasteur…

‘You play like a Woman!’ Effects of gender stereotype threat on Women's performance in physical and sport activities: A meta-analysis

2018

Abstract Objectives The purpose of this quantitative review was to provide an estimation of the effect of stereotype threat on women's performance in sport. Design This review employed a meta-analytic technique. Method a meta-analysis with random effects model was performed on 24 effects. Publication bias was tested through funnel plots and Egger's regression test. Results Findings show a symmetric distribution of effects, making it possible to conclude that no file-drawer problem affected the collected sample of effects. Aggregating the results of the reviewed studies, a medium effect of stereotype threat manipulation on women's sport performances emerged (d = 0.33). Collected studies were…

Modelling Spatio-Temporal Elephant Movement Data: a Generalized Additive Mixed Models Framework

2014

This thesis focuses on understanding how environmental factors influence elephant movement and in investigating the spatio-temporal patterns. The thesis analyses movement data of some African elephants (Loxodonta Africana) living in the Kruger National Park and its associated private reserves of South Africa. Due to heterogeneity among elephants, and nonlinear relationships between elephant movement and environmental variables, Generalized Additive Mixed Models (GAMMs) were employed. Results showed delayed effects of rainfall and temperature and particular trends in time and space.

High-speed motion estimation of fertilizer granules with Gabor filters

2008

In the context of fertilizer supply reduction, the understanding of the whole centrifugal spreading process became essential. Since few years we focused our research on the determination by image processing of the ejection conditions of flight of the granules, that is the trajectories and ejection angles, used as input data for ballistic flight to predict the fertilizer repartition on the ground. Due to relative high speed of the fertilizer granules (around 40 m.s -1 ), the previous parameters were evaluated using a specific high speed imaging system and image processing based on motion estimation method using Markov Random Fields method (MRFs). Even if the results were good (90% of correct…

Comparison of 1.0 M gadobutrol and 0.5 M gadopentate dimeglumine-enhanced MRI in 471 patients with known or suspected renal lesions : results of a mu…

2008

The purpose of this phase III clinical trial was to compare two different extracellular contrast agents, 1.0 M gadobutrol and 0.5 M gadopentate dimeglumine, for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with known or suspected focal renal lesions. Using a multicenter, single-blind, interindividual, randomized study design, both contrast agents were compared in a total of 471 patients regarding their diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity to correctly classify focal lesions of the kidney. To test for noninferiority the diagnostic accuracy rates for both contrast agents were compared with CT results based on a blinded reading. The average diagnostic accuracy across the three bli…

The role of red yeast rice (RYR) supplementation in plasma cholesterol control: A review and expert opinion.

2019

1. Preamble : Hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) [1]. Increased levels of low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) are associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and many clinical trials have shown that reducing LDL-C levels significantly reduced the CHD and CVD risk [[2], [3], [4], [5]]. Thus LDL-C-lowering is the main approach for the management of cardiovascular disease. Current guidelines suggest LDL-C levels targets based on the individual CV risk; such targets can be achieved by several means, which include both lifestyle changes and pharmacological approaches [6], with statins being the cornerstone …

Role of Octreotide, Scopolamine Butylbromide, and Hydration in Symptom Control of Patients with Inoperable Bowel Obstruction and Nasogastric Tubes

2000

Bowel obstruction may be an inoperable complication in patients with end-stage cancer. Scopolamine butylbromide (SB) and octreotide (OCT) have been successfully used with the aim of reducing gastrointestinal (GI) secretions to avoid placement of a nasogastric tube (NGT); however, there have been no comparative studies concerning the efficacy of these drugs. Furthermore, there is little information about the role played by parenteral hydration in symptom control of these patients. In a prospective trial that involved all 17 inoperable bowel-obstructed patients presenting to our services with a decompressive NGT, patients were randomized to OCT 0.3 mg/day or SB 60 mg/day for 3 days through a …

Isobaric Vapor–Liquid Equilibria of 1-Propanol + Water + Trifluoromethanesulfonate-Based Ionic Liquid Ternary Systems at 100 kPa

2011

Isobaric vapor–liquid equilibria (VLE) for the 1-propanol + 1-butyl-3-ethylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([beim][triflate]), water + [beim][triflate], 1-propanol + 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([bmpyr][triflate]), and water + [bmpyr][triflate] binary systems, as well as the VLE for the 1-propanol + water + [beim][triflate] and 1-propanol + water + [bmpyr][triflate] ternary systems have been obtained at 100 kPa using a recirculating still. The salting-out effect on the 1-propanol produced by the [bmpyr][triflate] was stronger than that produced by the [beim][triflate], although for the IL concentrations used in this study the effect was not enough to break …
