Effects of different simplified milk recording methods on genetic evaluation with Test-Day animal model

The aims of the present study were to compare estimated breeding values (EBV) for milk yield using different testing schemes with a test-day animal model and to evaluate the effect of different testing schemes on the ranking of top sheep. Alternative recording schemes that use less information than that currently obtained with a monthly test-day schedule were employed to estimate breeding values. A random regression animal mixed model that used a spline function of days in milk was fitted. Tryptophan quenching as linear sensor for oxygen binding of arthropod hemocyanins.

Oxygen binding of hemocyanins results in an absorption band around 340nm and a strong quenching of the intrinsic tryptophan fluorescence. Our study analyses in detail the fluorescence quenching within two hemocyanins, a hexamer (Panulirus interruptus) and a 4 x 6-mer (Eurypelma californicum). Based on the comparison of calculated and measured transfer efficiencies we could show that: (1) For both hemocyanins FRET (fluorescence resonance energy transfer) is exclusively responsible for quenching of the tryptophan fluorescence upon oxygen binding. The respiratory protein of the tarantula Eurypelma californicum is a 4 x 6-meric hemocyanin that binds oxygen with high cooperativity. This requires the existence of different conformations which have been confirmed by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Here we present reconstructed 3D-models of the oxy- and deoxy-forms of tarantula hemocyanins, as obtained by fitting small angle X-rays scattering curves on the basis of known X-ray structures and electron microscopy of related hemocyanins. Abstract Long repeated stretches of d(CCG) and tri-nucleotide are crucial mutations that cause hereditary forms of mental retardation (fragile X-syndrome). Moreover, the alternating (CG) di-nucleotide is one of the candidates for Z-DNA conformation. Solution NMR structure of d(CCGCGG) 2 has been solved and is discussed. The determined NMR solution structure is a distorted highly bent B-DNA conformation with increased flexibility in both terminal residues. This conformation differs significantly from the Z-DNA tetramer structure reported for the same hexamer in the crystal state at similar ionic strength by Malinina and co-workers. Random walks and random numbers from supercontinuum generation

International audience; We report a numerical study showing how the random intensity and phase fluctuations across the bandwidth of a broadband optical supercontinuum can be interpreted in terms of the random processes of random walks and L´evy flights. We also describe how the intensity fluctuations can be applied to physical random number generation. We conclude that the optical supercontinuum provides a highly versatile means of studying and generating a wide class of random processes at optical wavelengths.

Allergens from cockroaches cause major asthma-related health problems worldwide. Among them Per a 3 belongs to the most potent allergens. Although the sequences of some members of the Per a 3-family are known, their biochemical and biophysical properties have not been investigated. Here we present for the first time a thorough structural characterization of these allergens, which have recently been tested to induce an increase of allergy specific indicators in blood of Europeans. SummaryThe VIPS framework is a four-part definition of person-centred care for people with dementia (PCC), which arose out of an earlier review article for this journal. The definition has assisted in the practical application of person-centred care. It has been operationalized into the VIPS practice model (VPM), which has been subject to a recent randomized controlled trial within Norwegian nursing homes.
