Approximations in Statistics from a Decision-Theoretical Viewpoint

The approximation of the probability density p(.) of a random vector x∊X by another (possibly more convenient) probability density q(.) which belongs to a certain class Q is analyzed as a decision problem where the action space is the class Qof available approximations, the relevant uncertain event is the actual value of the vector x and the utility function is a proper scoring rule. The logarithmic divergence is shown to play a rather special role within this approach. The argument lies entirely within a Bayesian framework.

Adaptive trial design: a general methodology for censored time to event data.

Adaptive designs allow a clinical trial design to be changed according to interim findings without inflating type I error. The Inverse Normal method can be considered as an adaptive generalization of classical group sequential designs. The use of the Inverse Normal method for censored survival data was demonstrated only for the logrank statistic. However, the logrank statistic is inefficient in the presence of nuisance covariates affecting survival. We demonstrate, how the Inverse Normal method can be applied to Cox regression analysis. Accurate machine learning with high-dimensional data is affected by phenomena known as the “curse” of dimensionality. One of the main strategies explored in the last decade to deal with this problem is the use of multi-classifier systems. Random coincidences can contribute substantially to the background in positron emission tomography (PET). Several estimation methods are being used for correcting them. The goal of this study was to investigate the validity of techniques for random coincidence estimation, with various low-energy thresholds (LETs). The simplex dispersion ordering and its application to the evaluation of human corneal endothelia

A multivariate dispersion ordering based on random simplices is proposed in this paper. Given a R^d-valued random vector, we consider two random simplices determined by the convex hulls of two independent random samples of sizes d+1 of the vector. By means of the stochastic comparison of the Hausdorff distances between such simplices, a multivariate dispersion ordering is introduced. Main properties of the new ordering are studied.
