DISTANCE‐BASED DECISION TREES FOR RANKING DATA: THE ROLE OF THE WEIGHT SYSTEMS
2018
In everyday life ranking and classification are basic cognitive skills that people use in order to grade everything that they experience. Grouping and ordering a set of elements is considered easy and communicative; thus, rankings of sport‐teams, universities, countries and so on are often observed. A particular case of ranking data is represented by preference data, where individuals show their preferences over a set of items. When individuals specific characteristics are available, an important issue concerns the identification of the profiles of respondents (or judges) giving the same/similar rankings. In order to incorporate respondent‐specific covariates distance‐based decision tree mo…
Ranking World Tourism Competitiveness: A Comparison of Two Composite Indicators
2021
Assessing travel and tourism competitiveness (T&TC) is becoming an issue of paramount importance for stakeholders, mainly policymakers and practitioners. The availability of new databases such as the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report from the World Economic Forum (WEF) has boosted this interest. This chapter contributes to the current literature in this field with an assessment of the T&TC of 136 world tourist destinations. In doing so, two well-known approaches are employed: Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) with endogenous common weights, and the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solutions (TOPSIS). World tourist destinations are ranked using these approaches,…

Vasoactive peptide urotensin II in plasma is associated with cerebral vasospasm after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and constitutes a potential …
2019
National audience; OBJECTIVECerebral vasospasm (VS) is a severe complication of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Urotensin II (UII) is a potent vasoactive peptide activating the urotensin (UT) receptor, potentially involved in brain vascular pathologies. The authors hypothesized that UII/UT system antagonism with the UT receptor antagonist/biased ligand urantide may be associated with post-SAH VS. The objectives of this study were 2-fold: 1) to leverage an experimental mouse model of SAH with VS in order to study the effect of urotensinergic system antagonism on neurological outcome, and 2) to investigate the association between plasma UII level and symptomatic VS after SAH in huma…

The overall classification of residential buildings: Possible role of tourist EU Ecolabel award scheme
2012
Abstract The debate on the environmental performance of buildings and their classification is continuously rising and deeply involves all actors of the sector, from researchers to technicians and from owners to real estate managers. In the field, the EU has created a panel that is currently working on defining the criteria for attributing an Ecolabel award to a building. However, despite the enormous efforts made by administrative and academic institutions, a suitable and widely available scheme for operators to assess the environmental performance of a building is far from being established. To help provide a solution to the problem, the possibility of adopting the EU Ecolabel scheme estab…
Indexing Multimedia Learning Materials in Ultimate Course Search
2016
International audience; Multimedia is the main support for online learning materials and the size of multimedia learning materials is growing with the popularity of online programs offered by Universities. Ultimate Course Search (UCS) is a tool that aims to provide efficient search of course materials. UCS integrates slides, lecture videos and textbook content into a single platform with search capabilities. The keywords extracted from the textbook index and the power-point slides are the basis of the indexing scheme. The slides are indexed on the keywords and the videos are indexed on the slides. The correspondence between the slides and video segments is established using the meta-data pr…
Assessment of wastewater treatment alternatives for small communities: An analytic network process approach
2015
The selection of the most appropriate wastewater treatment (WWT) technology is a complex problem since many alternatives are available and many criteria are involved in the decision-making process. To deal with this challenge, the analytic network process (ANP) is applied for the first time to rank a set of seven WWT technology set-ups for secondary treatment in small communities. A major advantage of ANP is that it incorporates interdependent relationships between elements. Results illustrated that extensive technologies, constructed wetlands and pond systems are the most preferred alternatives by WWT experts. The sensitivity analysis performed verified that the ranking of WWT alternatives…
Similarity and Consistency in Hotel Online Ratings across Platforms
2019
Online ratings are a major driver of hotel choice. There are many ratings platforms, and the number of evaluations is huge. This article analyzes if hotel ratings vary across platforms, vary over time, and if consistency in ratings can be observed. Longitudinal online ratings taken from 11 platforms over a two-year period were analyzed through Self-Organizing Maps. The findings suggest a similar pattern of online ratings across most of the platforms, except for Yelp and HolidayCheck. In addition, the evaluation patterns are stable over time, and the analyzed attributes do not contribute decisively to explain the overall evaluation of hotels, which implies that tourists use a noncompensator…
Fuzzy ServPerf model combined with ELECTRE III to comparatively evaluate service quality of international airports in Sicily
2015
In this paper a new approach was proposed so as to comparatively evaluate the quality of service alternatives. In particular, a fuzzy extension of the ServPerf service conceptual model was considered to estimate quality scores of fundamental service criteria, whereas the non-compensative multi-criteria decision-making ELECTRE III method was employed to point out the quality ranking of service alternatives on the basis of which the comparative service quality analysis was performed. In order to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach, an empirical study concerning service quality evaluation of the three international airports in Sicily (Italy) was conducted with detailed proposals fo…
