Intraoperative brain mapping of language, cognitive functions, and social cognition in awake surgery of low-grade gliomas located in the right non-do…

2020

Abstract Objective The aim of our study was to evaluate the usefulness of cortical-subcortical intraoperative brain mapping (ioBM) in resective awake surgery of low-grade gliomas (LGG) of the right non-dominant hemisphere (RndH). It was estimated how ioBM may affect both the extent of resection and postoperative outcome of language, spatial cognition, social cognition, and executive functions including attention and working memory. Patients and Methods : Fifteen patients that underwent ioBM in resective awake surgery of LGG located on the RndH, were included. A cohort of 15 patients with the same tumour location operated under general anaesthesia without brain mapping was used as control. S…

Economic aspects of different muscle relaxant regimens.

2000

Objective At a time of cost reduction in medical care efforts to manage the ever-increasing costs of new pharmaceutical drugs become increasingly important. Costs of four different muscle relaxant regimens including the new intermediate-acting neuromuscular blocking drugs (NMBD) cisatracurium and rocuronium will be analyzed. Methods Eighty patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy were prospectively studied. All patients received standardized general anaesthesia with desflurane/fentanyl. Muscle relaxation was achieved with atracurium, cisatracurium, vecuronium, or rocuronium with 20 patients in each group. Intraoperatively muscle relaxants were added to maintain two twitches of the t…

Quality of vision with the Acri. Twin asymmetric diffractive bifocal intraocular lens system.

2007

To assess the quality of vision in patients who had implantation of asymmetric Acri. Twin bifocal diffractive intraocular lenses (IOLs) by evaluating distance and near visual acuities and photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity under monocular and binocular conditions.Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Oviedo, Spain. The study comprised 343 consecutive patients who had bilateral implantation of the Acri. Twin system: a distance-weighted 737D IOL and a near-weighted 733D IOL. Monocular and binocular best corrected distance visual acuities, best distance corrected near visual acuity, and distance contrast sensitivity under photopic (85 cd/m(2)) and mesopic (5 cd/m(2)) conditions were…

Multichannel functional testing in normal subjects, glaucoma suspects, and glaucoma patients

2012

Purpose.: To evaluate visual function with a novel multichannel functional test named the ATD Multichannel Functional Test. Methods.: This multicenter study had a prospective and cross-sectional design. A total of 186 eyes were included: 42 with glaucoma, 14 glaucoma suspects due to optic nerve characteristics, 25 ocular hypertensives, and 105 normal eyes. All patients performed standard visual fields (Humphrey 24-2) and ATD with eight stimuli configurations: four achromatic (A), two red-green (T), and two blue-yellow (D). To derive main outcome measures, mean sensitivity, mean defect (MD), and pattern standard deviation (PSD) were calculated and compared among groups and types of stimuli w…

Is There an Indication for Intraoperative MRI in Subtotal Resection of Glioblastoma? A Multicenter Retrospective Comparative Analysis.

2017

Objective Surgery in patients with highly eloquent glioblastoma (GB) remains challenging. The aim of this study was to evaluate influence of use of intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (iMRI) on extent of resection (EOR), clinical outcome, and survival in patients with preoperatively intended subtotal resection of GB. Methods Retrospective assessment was performed in 3 neurosurgical centers (2008–2013). All patients with primary GB, unilocular growth, and adjuvant radiochemotherapy in whom subtotal resection was intended were included. Imaging data were pseudonymized and volumetrically assessed by a central reviewer. Clinical outcome was evaluated based on complications, new permanent …

Effect of Corticosteroids on Facial Function after Cerebellopontine Angle Tumor Removal: A Double-Blind Study versus Placebo

2015

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of corticosteroids administered intra- and postoperatively on the occurrence of facial palsy after a cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumor resection, and to investigate pre- and intraoperative prognostic factors. A multicenter, prospective, randomized, double-blind and versus-placebo study was conducted between 2006 and 2010. Three hundred and ten patients operated on for a CPA tumor (96% vestibular schwannomas, 4% miscellaneous) were included by five participating centers. The population was stratified into patients with small (≤15 mm CPA on axial MRI views) and large tumors. In each group, patients were randomized to receive corticosteroid (1 mg…

Changes in cerebral oxygen saturation following prone positioning for orthopaedic surgery under general anaesthesia: a prospective observational stud…

2015

Prone positioning is often necessary in orthopaedic surgery. The prone position, however, may result in impaired cerebral venous drainage with a subsequent reduction in cerebral perfusion. As a consequence, cerebral hypoxia may occur with the potential for neurological impairment. We assessed the changes in cerebral oxygen saturation with near-infrared spectroscopy using two different monitors after positioning the patient from supine to prone.Prospective observational study.Primary Care University Hospital, from May 2010 to February 2011.Forty patients undergoing general anaesthetic procedures, of which 35 completed the investigation. Similar measurements were done in 35 volunteers, who wer…

Optical quality in eyes with aspheric intraocular lenses and in younger and older adult phakic eyes: comparative study.

2009

To compare ocular higher-order aberrations (HOAs) in eyes with aspheric intraocular lenses (IOL) and in phakic eyes.Department of Ophthalmology, Military Health Service Institute, Warsaw, Poland.Higher-order aberrations with a 5.0 mm pupil and best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) were analyzed in a young phakic group (age 20 to 40 years), older phakic group (age 40 to 60 years), and a pseudophakic group (age 62 to 84 years; SN60WF aspheric IOL).The mean coma was 0.13 microm+/-0.07 (SD) in the younger phakic group, 0.18+/-0.08 microm in the older phakic group, and 0.16+/-0.08 microm in the pseudophakic group; the difference between the 2 phakic groups was statistically significant …

Comparison of visual and refractive results of Toric Implantable Collamer Lens with bioptics for myopic astigmatism.

2013

PURPOSE: To compare visual and refractive results of Toric Implantable Collamer Lens (TICL) and bioptics (ICL plus excimer corneal surgery) to treat myopic astigmatism. METHODS: Eighty-one eyes underwent TICL implantation and 83 eyes were treated with bioptics (corneal ablation was performed between 1.5 and 6 months after ICL implantation). Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), refraction, adverse events, safety, and efficacy were evaluated 12 months postoperatively. RESULTS: At 12 months postoperatively, the mean spherical equivalent was -0.15 ± 0.36 diopters (D) in the TICL group and -0.08 ± 0.26 D in the bioptics group (p = 0.099). Sixty-six …
