Laser spectroscopy with an electrostatic ConeTrap

2017

A compact electrostatic trap has been designed and installed as part of the recent upgrades to the IGISOL IV facility. The ConeTrap provides an in vacuo optical pumping site for low energy (800 eV) ionic ensembles available for interaction periods of 10-100 ms. At present, 6.7(3) % of injected mass A=98 ions can be trapped, stored for 5 ms, extracted and transported to a laser-ion interaction region. This fraction represents those ions for which no perturbation to total energy or energy spread is observed. Proposed enhancements to the trap are designed to improve the trapping efficiency by up to a factor of 5. Differential pumping and reduction in background pressure below the present 10−6 …

A compact linear Paul trap cooler buncher for CRIS

2020

A gas-filled linear Paul trap for the Collinear Resonance Ionisation Spectroscopy (CRIS) experiment at ISOLDE, CERN is currently under development. The trap is designed to accept beam from both ISOLDE target stations and the CRIS stable ion source. The motivation for the project along with the current design, simulations and future plans, will be outlined. peerReviewed

A method of magnetic storage of ultra-cold neutrons for a precise measurement of the neutron lifetime

1999

The beta-decay lifetime of the free neutron has been determined most precisely using storage of ultra-cold neutrons (UCNs) in material bottles. The quantity measured is the storage time which is substantially smaller than due to spurious losses of UCNs at collisions with the bottle walls. The systematic uncertainty of the correction - to the true lifetime is presently the main obstacle towards higher precision in this measurement. In the alternative magnetic trapping of UCNs, storage conditions can be realized where this correction becomes vanishingly small. This paper gives a method to measure the neutron lifetime with very low systematic errors, using confinement of UCNs in vacuum by magn…

Positron Annihilation in Corroded Steels St20 and St3S

2006

The paper deals with examining the lifetimes of positrons emitted from Na source in corroded St20 and St3S steels. Influence of the method of defecting the sample surfaces on the spectrum of positron lifetimes was investigated. Influence of temperature of initial annealing of samples, plastic deformation, electrolytic hydrogenation and corrosion in HCl vapors on trapping positrons in the examined steels was also determined.

Entanglement control via reservoir engineering in ultracold atomic gases

2013

We study the entanglement of two impurity qubits immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) reservoir. This open quantum system is particularly interesting because the reservoir and system parameters are easily controllable and the reduced dynamics is highly non-Markovian. We show how the model allows for interpolation between a common dephasing scenario and an independent dephasing scenario by simply modifying the wavelength of the superlattice superposed to the BEC, and how this influences the dynamical properties of the impurities. We demonstrate the existence of very rich entanglement dynamics correspondent to different values of reservoir parameters, including phenomena such as entan…

On chip optical nanotweezing for dielectric particles manipulation

2014

On chips optical nanocavities have become useful tools for trapping and manipulation of colloidal objects. In this thesis we study the nanocavities as building blocks for optical forces, trapping and handling of particles. Proof of concept of trapping dielectric microspheres appears as the starting point of the development of lab on chip. In the first chapter we go through the literature of optical forces in free space and integrated optics. The second chapter presents the experimental tools for the characterization of nanocavities and the set-up developed to perform optical measurements with the colloidal particles. The third chapter describes the proof-of-concept trapping of polystyrene p…

Nutraceutical Value of Pantelleria Capers (Capparis spinosa L.)

2019

Abstract: Unopened flower buds of Capparis spinosa L. (capers), generally used in the Mediterranean area as food flavoring, are known to be a good source of bioactive compounds. The aim of this work was to evaluate the nutraceutical value of salt-fermented capers collected from different areas of Pantelleria Island (Italy), testing their methylglyoxal and glyoxal trapping capacity and antioxidant activity by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH), [2,2-azinobis(3-ethylben- zothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)] diammonium salt (ABTS), and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assays. Hydrophilic extracts were also characterized by high-performance liquid chromatography–electrospray ionization/ma…

Comparison of free software platforms for the calculation of the 90% confidence interval of f2 similarity factor by bootstrap analysis

2020

Abstract Introduction The calculation of the 90% confidence interval of f2 based on the bootstrap methodology has been proposed and accepted by the main regulatory authorities when the dissolution data shows excessive variability. Different free software platforms allow the calculation of the 90% CI of f2 by means of bootstrapping. Their use in regulatory submissions is growing, but divergent results have been observed between the available software platforms. Therefore, the objective of this work is to analyze the characteristics of these software platforms and evaluate their results. Methods and materials Highly variable in vitro dissolution data from two products were selected. Three dif…

Optically assisted trapping with high-permittivity dielectric rings: Towards optical aerosol filtration

2016

Controlling the transport, trapping, and filtering of nanoparticles is important for many applications. By virtue of their weak response to gravity and their thermal motion, various physical mechanisms can be exploited for such operations on nanoparticles. However, the manipulation based on optical forces is potentially most appealing since it constitutes a highly deterministic approach. Plasmonic nanostructures have been suggested for this purpose, but they possess the disadvantages of locally generating heat and trapping the nanoparticles directly on surface. Here, we propose the use of dielectric rings made of high permittivity materials for trapping nanoparticles. Thanks to their abilit…

Prediction of Aquatic Toxicity of Benzene Derivatives to Tetrahymena pyriformis According to OECD Principles

2016

Background: Many QSAR studies have been developed to predict acute toxicity over several biomarkers like Pimephales promelas, Daphnia magna and Tetrahymena pyriformis. Regardless of the progress made in this field there are still some gaps to be resolved such as the prediction of aquatic toxicity over the protozoan T. pyriformis still lack a QSAR study focused in accomplish the OECD principles. Methods: Atom-based quadratic indices are used to obtain quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models for the prediction of aquatic toxicity. Our models agree with the principles required by the OECD for QSAR models to regulatory purposes. The database employed consists of 392 substitut…
