Luminescence and structural properties of defects in ion implanted ZnO
2006
ZnO substrates and films were intentionally implanted with rare earth and transition metal ions. The influence of the implantation and subsequent air thermal annealing treatments on the structural and optical properties of ZnO samples were studied by using Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and low temperature photoluminescence techniques. Intraionic Tm-related emission was observed for bulk and ZnO films. Similarly, Eu and Tb-doped ZnO films follow the same trend observed in bulk samples. No intraionic related emission was observed for Eu-doped samples even being the ion in Zn sites and for the Tb-doped samples ion segregation was observed for thermal annealing temperatures above 800 °…
Association between toenail scandium levels and risk of acute myocardial infarction in European men: the EURAMIC and Heavy Metals Study
2002
The association between scandium status and risk of acute myocardial infarction (MI) was examined in a multicentre case control study in 10 centres from Europe and Israel. Scandium in toenails was assessed in 684 cases and 724 controls less than 70 years of age. Mean concentrations of toenail scandium were 6.74 micro/kg in cases and 7.75 microg/kg in controls. Scandium among controls, adjusted for age and centre was positively associated with concentrations of lycopene and oleic acid in adipose tissue (P = 0.002 for both nutrients). Pearson correlations adjusted for age and centre were significant (P0.05) between scandium and lycopene (r = 0.08), zinc (r = 0.08), mercury (r = 0.18) and olei…

Europium(III)-doped A(2)Hf(2)O(7) (A = Y, Gd, Lu) nanoparticles: Influence of annealing temperature, europium(III) concentration and host cation on t…
2016
The detailed analyses of structure and luminescence of europium(III)-doped A(2)Hf(2)O(7) (A = Y, Gd, Lu) nanoparticles is presented. Samples were prepared by time and cost effective combustion method that utilize polyethylene glycol both as a chelating agent and as a fuel, with different europium(III) concentrations (from 1 to 12 at.%), annealed at temperatures ranging from 800 to 1400 degrees C, and with alternating A(3+) cation in the A(2)Hf(2)O(7) host. Then, structural variations between materials were analysed by Xray diffraction and structural refinement, while the changes in the luminescence were assessed from the Judd-Ofelt analyses of emission spectra. Nanoparticles prepared at the…
Metal enhanced fluorescence in rare earth doped plasmonic core–shell nanoparticles
2013
International audience; We theoretically and numerically investigate metal enhanced fluorescence of plasmonic core–shell nanoparticles doped with rare earth (RE) ions. Particle shape and size are engineered to maximize the average enhancement factor (AEF) of the overall doped shell. We show that the highest enhancement (11 in the visible and 7 in the near-infrared) is achieved by tuning either the dipolar or the quadrupolar particle resonance to the rare earth ion's excitation wavelength. Additionally, the calculated AEFs are compared to experimental data reported in the literature, obtained in similar conditions (plasmon mediated enhancement) or when a metal–RE energy transfer mechanism is…

Crystal structures of new ternary compounds in RE–Pt–Pb and RE–Au–Pb systems (RE=rare earth metal)
2012
Abstract The crystal structures of the compounds RE 2 Pt 2 Pb (RE = Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu; Mo 2 FeB 2 structure type, space group P 4/ mbm , Pearson code tP10 ), REPtPb (RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm; ZrNiAl structure type, space group P 6 ¯ 2 m , Pearson code hP9 ), RE 2 Au 2 Pb (RE = Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu; Er 2 Au 2 Sn structure type, space group P 4 2 / mnm , Pearson code tP20 ) and REAuPb (RE = Tm, Yb and Lu) were determined using X-ray powder diffraction.
