'SMART laser', Development of laser sources integrating an optimized functioning via a process of learning

2022

Ost commercially available mode-blocking lasers provide a unique pulse regime to the user, driven only by a simple switch. To solve certain problems, it would be advantageous to increase the possibilities of pulse adjustment in many areas of application, from micro-machining to wavelength conversion. One way to increase the degrees of freedom of a laser cavity is to incorporate into it a saturable absorbant with adjustable parameters, as with non-linear polarization evolution devices (NPEs). The absence of an analytical relationship between the adjustable cavity parameters and the characteristics of a generated pulse can be circumvented by the use of scalable algorithms, well suited to mult…

Determinants of interest margins in Spanish credit institutions before and after the 2008 financial crash

2017

As interest margins of credit institutions affect economic performance of countries, finding out which are the main determinants of their evolution is a research task of great interest at current times. This is the purpose of the present paper as regards to the Spanish case over the period 2004-2012. Based on the econometric contributions by Ho and Saunders (1981) and some of its extensions, the authors develop a model that includes as explanatory variables the factors usually examined in the literature and other singular variables that might be relevant. Particularly, the rate of leverage, the quality of their assets measured according to their risk, and the profit obtained from the sellin…

Chronic neuropathic facial pain after intense pulsed light hair removal. Clinical features and pharmacological management

2015

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) photodepilation is usually performed as a hair removal method. The treatment is recommended to be indicated by a physician, depending on each patient and on its characteristics. However, the use of laser devices by medical laypersons is frequent and it can suppose a risk of damage for the patients. Most side effects associated to IPL photodepilation are transient, minimal and disappear without sequelae. However, permanent side effects can occur. Some of the complications are laser related but many of them are caused by an operator error or mismanagement. In this work, we report a clinical case of a patient that developed a chronic neuropathic facial pain following…

Post vaccine acute disseminated encephalomyelitis as the first manifestation of chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome in a 15-month old baby: a case r…

2014

We describe a case of a 15-month-old female child admitted to our hospital because of fever, rash, neurological signs (oscillation between states of irritability and drowsiness), palpebral edema and drooping eyelid, appeared 10 days after the vaccination for measles, mumps and rubella. Brain MRI images showed multiple bilateral hyperintense lesions in the white matter typical of acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), an autoimmune demyelinating disorder with inflammatory lesions of the central nervous system, due to viral antigens or vaccines. In the mean time, because of patient's vague phenotypic manifestations, suggestive of a genetic defect, array comparative genomic hybridization…

Probing ultrafast changes of spin and charge density profiles with resonant XUV magnetic reflectivity at the free-electron laser FERMI

2017

We report the results of resonant magnetic XUV reflectivity experiments performed at the XUV free-electron laser FERMI. Circularly polarized XUV light with the photon energy tuned to the Fe M2,3 edge is used to measure resonant magnetic reflectivities and the corresponding Q-resolved asymmetry of a Permalloy/Ta/Permalloy trilayer film. The asymmetry exhibits ultrafast changes on 240 fs time scales upon pumping with ultrashort IR laser pulses. Depending on the value of the wavevector transfer Qz, we observe both decreasing and increasing values of the asymmetry parameter, which is attributed to ultrafast changes in the vertical spin and charge density profiles of the trilayer film.

Quantitative measurements of magnetic stray field dynamics of Permalloy particles in a photoemission electron microscopy

2010

By example of a Permalloy particle (40 × 40 μm(2) size, 30 nm thickness) we demonstrate a procedure to quantitatively investigate the dynamics of magnetic stray fields during ultrafast magnetization reversal. The measurements have been performed in a time-resolving photoemission electron microscope using the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. In the particle under investigation, we have observed a flux-closure-dominated magnetic ground structure, minimizing the magnetic stray field outside the sample. A fast magnetic field pulse introduced changes in the micromagnetic structure accompanied with an incomplete flux closure. As a result, stray fields arise along the edges of domains, which cau…

Correlación, en pacientes infectados por el VIH-1 y previamente tratados, entre la reacción de hipersensibilidad a abacavir y el alelo HLA-B*5701

2009

Introduction: Hypersensitivity reaction to abacavir (a powerful inverse transcriptase inhibitor) is a serious adverse effect that limits its use in antiretroviral treatment and requires a high level of clinical surveillance. Certain haplotypes of the primary histocompatibility complex proteins (HLA-B*5701) are very signifi cant predictors of the risk of hypersensitivity to this drug. The purpose of this study is to identify the cases where a probable hypersensitivity reaction to abacavir presented the HLA-B*5701 allele. Method: A retrospective study was conducted in all HIV-1 positive adult patients infected treated with abacavir between January 2000 and December 2007, in Department 6 of th…

Control of the Magnetic Configuration of Ferromagnetic Nanostructures Across the Structural Phase Transition of Vanadium Dioxide

2016

We investigate the effect of the structural phase transition in VO 2 in magnetoelastically coupled heterostructures of VO 2 and Ni. Continuous and nano-patterned Ni layers were used, and we found reversible and reproducible magnetic domain switching induced by the VO 2 structural phase transition. The magnetic states of the nano-patterned ferromagnetic elements were dominated by topographic features which generated strong pinning but still allowed for a reversible switching between the states. Our measurements constitute a key step for the use of the VO 2 phase transition for ultrafast dynamical studies of the inverse mangetostrictive effect, and eventually employing the effect for ultrafas…

Ultrafast electron transfer in photosynthesis: reduced pheophytin and quinone interaction mediated by conical intersections.

2006

The mechanism of electron transfer (ET) from reduced pheophytin (Pheo(-)) to the primary stable photosynthetic acceptor, a quinone (Q) molecule, is addressed by using high-level ab initio computations and realistic molecular models. The results reveal that the ET process involving the (Pheo(-) + Q) and (Pheo + Q(-)) oxidation states can be essentially seen as an ultrafast radiationless transition between the two hypersurfaces taking place via conical intersections (CIs). According to the present findings, an efficient ultrafast ET implies that the Pheo- and Q move toward each other in a given preferential parallel orientation, reaching the most effective arrangement for ET at intermolecular…
