Constructing a Transmedia Universe : The Case of Battlestar Galactica
2021
In this article, we define a ‘transmedia universe’ as encompassing the complexity of transmedia storytelling, production and consumption. In doing so, we use the popular science fiction television series Battlestar Galactica as a case study, including both the original and reimagined versions of the series and their various intramedia and transmedia, narrative and non-narrative, and diegetic and non-diegetic expansions. Moreover, we look beyond the official productions of the Battlestar Galactica franchise and include, for example, user-generated content within its transmedia universe. peerReviewed
Paramedia : thresholds of the social text
2017
This work is an adaptation of Gerard Genette’s theory of paratexts to social media. Paratexts are information surrounding texts, and usually helping the user to decide whether or not to consume a text. In social media, a plurality of new information surrounds texts we read every day. They are dynamic by nature and have different authors: the social platforms, like Facebook or YouTube; the authors of texts, and the users who comment and share them. This collection of four articles will debate the ethos in social media, what is an author in social media, what are the identified paratexts in selected social media websites and the limits of interpretation of paratexts in contemporary Brazilian …

Presently, the European Union strategies aim at strengthening the rural areas that are characterized by a deep depopulation, people aging, and a weak employment market. In these "marginalized" areas, the urban regeneration process may be assisted by the creation of smart villages, realities that will cooperate and create innovative small towns. The Sicilian inner mountain area, in particular, consists of twenty-one villages - mostly dating back to the Middle Age - that present an attractive localization due to naturalistic, landscape and cultural features, also qualified by a well-preserved geographical area whose main building typological features were not altered during time. This paper p…

Refining the preconditions of a social licence to operate (SLO) : reflections on citizens’ attitudes towards mining in two Finnish regions
2016
The debate around the social licence to operate (SLO) has been lively in recent years. In its elementary forms, the SLO is interpreted as the social acceptance granted by a community to mineral exploration and mining activities. Our theoretical assumption is that the SLO as a concept is both case-specific and more general, contingent, among other things, upon public opinion. In this study, acceptance is considered as general and anticipatory in the sense that it can act as a precondition for individual SLOs. Our intention is to contribute especially to recent novel research focusing on the more general background and factors contributing to the SLO. Using survey data (N = 1064), we explore …
Social Entrepreneurship Discourses and Contributions : A Literature Analysis
2017
Differing from traditional type of entrepreneurship (i.e. business/ commercial entrepreneurship), social entrepreneurship embeds social value creation as its main objective. Recently, social entrepreneurship research is gaining popularity; meanwhile, ethics within social enterprises have not been comprehensively analyzed and debated. How to teach and train social entrepreneurs has also become a point of pedagogical significance. With a critical review of extant literature related to social entrepreneurship, a series of concepts emanate. We categorized our findings into three conceptual groups – ethics, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and sustainability. Based on a qualitative meta-an…
The Influence of Religion on Life Satisfaction in Italy
2021
Italy is the cradle of Catholicism and, despite the secularization process, religion continues to be part of its national culture. Although Italian sociologists have investigated the religious paradigm in Italy, there are aspects of such phenomenon still little explored. This paper examines the potential influence religion has on individuals’ life satisfaction. Data from the European Value Study survey provides evidence of a two-way interaction between religion and life satisfaction, with a substantial effect only in the case of public religious forms. This association seems to be moved by the mechanism of social support, and it differs across Italian regions. Results confirm the hypothesis…
