Software Renting in the Era of Cloud Computing

2012

In the new era of computing, software can be sold and delivered as a cloud service, and software renting has become as a strategic tool to compete in the market. Software renting has several advantages from the customer's point of view. However, for software providers it is challenging to ensure a profitable revenue stream when a license fee is replaced by a periodic rental fee. In this study, software renting was found to help the case firms to differentiate themselves from competitors; it also increased their competitive advantage by making the software available for a larger customer group. However, the negotiating power of larger customers impacted on software pricing, rental agreements…

Performance of an asymmetric and asynchronous decode-and-forward FBMC relay system

2014

End-to-end link performance of an asymmetric and asynchronous dual-hop decode-and-forward (DF) relay system built up using a causal multirate filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) technique operated under Rayleigh fading is presented. Three main performance measures namely bit error rate (BER), outage probability and channel capacity are used for this evaluation and approximate closed-form expressions for them are also made available. FBMC setup is modeled in exact form without any approximations while customizing to one of the most efficient subcarrier filter. Simulations are carried out in quasi-static multipath fading channels under symmetric, asymmetric, synchronous and asynchronous condition…

SERS detection of cell surface and intracellular components of microorganisms using nano-aggregated Ag substrate

2016

Abstract The intracellular and cell surface composition and structural features of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria were identified using near-infrared surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). The structural differences of components that reside in the cell envelope are manifested by their SERS spectra, e.g. gram-negative vs. gram-positive. Silver particles were used as a SERS substrate by exploiting the existence of strong local electromagnetic fields (hot spots) within nanoscale aggregates of the particles. The aggregation of silver nanoparticles was induced by magnesium ions. These hot spots reduce the screening length of the double layer. The obtained SERS spectra showed excell…

Accelerating the Americanization of Management Education

2015

The Journal of Management Inquiry astutely predicted in 2004 that the Americanization of business education would not just continue but increase. Ten years later, it is arguable that the acceleration of the Americanization of management education has exceeded all expectations. To theoretically build toward understanding how and why the American business education model has been adopted to different extents, this comparative study builds on the institutional logics perspective, arguing that different institutional logics can potentially explain the various forms and patterns of Americanization and how they are manifested in the world’s business schools.

Työura : yksilön valintoja vai monimutkaista kehkeytymistä?

2019

Artikkelissa tutkimme työurien kaaosteorian potentiaalia yhä moninaisemmiksi muuttuvien työuri-en ymmärtämisessä sekä työurien ja koetun terveyden välisten kytkösten hahmottamisessa. Kaaos-teoria tuo esiin työurien erilaiset muodot ja niitä värittävät monenlaiset epävarmuudet, satunnaisuu-det ja siirtymät. Aineistomme muodostuu kahdestatoista pohjoiskarjalalaisen miehen haastattelusta.

Global, National, or Market? Emerging REDD+ Governance Practices in Mozambique and Tanzania

2016

This article examines emerging governance practices in the REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) initiative. We examine three different general governance practices (neoliberal, post-national, and government-led practices) that have been applied in the interaction between international organizations and two REDD target countries: Mozambique and Tanzania. In these countries, we find that emerging REDD+ governance practices are a mixture of international organizations’ procedural practices and the target country’s established governance practices, whereas neoliberal practices are weakly expressed. These findings call into question the simplified assumption of re…

Is there a Nordic model of final disposal of spent nuclear fuel? Governance insights from Finland and Sweden

2017

This paper explores citizen participation in Swedish and Finnish regulatory processes for final disposal of spent nuclear fuel (SNF). Finland and Sweden are considered the most advanced worldwide in term of SNF disposal plans. Our aim is to analyze the institutional waste management frameworks, focusing on the role of civil society organizations (CSOs); how lay-people and civil society organizations have been able to participate and contribute to radioactive waste licensing processes; and the nature of radioactive waste risk debates. We review official documents of the waste companies and nuclear safety authorities, plus information from civil society organizations and laypeople. Our theore…

Enterprising Culture : Discourses on Entrepreneurship in Nordic Cultural Policy

2017

ABSTRACTThe sphere of arts and culture has been going through a process of economic reevaluation during the last few decades. Parallel to the rise of a creative economy discourse, which both in its political and scientific forms has highlighted the economic significance of culture and arts, entrepreneurship has become a feature in the cultural policy of many countries. In this article, we compare how entrepreneurship is established and used as a concept in cultural policy discourses in two Nordic countries, Norway and Finland. Through analyzing policy plans and documents, we discuss what is seen as positive cultural or artistic activity in the framework of entrepreneurship, and we identify …

Turvetuotannon sosiaalisen toimiluvan menetys Saarijärven reitillä

2018

Following the 1970s oil crisis the search for alternative energy sources intensified in Finland. As a result, peat harvesting from peat bogs was launched programmatically. This included peat bogs around the Saarijärvi waterway in central Finland, consisting today about 50 peat harvesting sites. As in a number of cases, these peat harvesting operations are opposed by the local residents, who insist that peat harvesting is spoiling the waters, and thus damaging recreational activities like fishing, swimming, and the enjoyment of nature. The aim of our study was to investigate the situation in greater detail by eliciting local residents’ experiences. In the fall of 2015 a questionnaire was sen…
