Suppression of pulse pedestal using nonlinear optical loop mirrors in grating-compensated dispersion-managed fiber transmission systems

2006

Pulse pedestal suppression by nonlinear optical loop mirrors is utilized to reduce the intersymbol interference caused by the group delay ripples of a real grating profile in dispersion-managed communication systems compensated by chirped fiber gratings.

Etched LPFGs in reflective configuration for sensitivity and attenuation band depth increase

2016

A reflection configuration setup for long-period fiber gratings is presented. It permits to obtain a unique band with attenuation double than that obtained in transmission configuration, which is interesting for applications where this value is reduced (e.g., the mode transition phenomenon). The method is based on the deposition of a silver mirror at the end of the optical fiber, which permits to absorb the power transmitted through cladding modes and to avoid the generation of interferometric bands. The method also solves the requirement of a precise cleave or to polish the end of the grating, a drawback present in other publications. The versatility of the setup has been proved by applica…

Time-domain fiber laser hydrogen sensor.

2004

We report a novel scheme for a fiber-optic hydrogen sensor based on an erbium-doped fiber laser with a palladium-coated tapered fiber within the laser cavity. The tapered fiber acts as a hydrogen-sensing element. When the sensing element is exposed to a hydrogen atmosphere, its attenuation decreases, changing the cavity losses and leading to a modification of the laser transient. The hydrogen concentration is obtained by simple measurement of the buildup time of the laser. This technique translates the measurement of hydrogen concentration into the time domain, and it can be extended to many intensity-based fiber sensors. Relative variations in the buildup time of up to 55% at an increase o…

Formation of Femtosecond Parabolic Pulses in Normal-Dispersion Optical Fibers

2013

We have shown through extensive numerical simulations that application of passive nonlinear reshaping in normal-dispersion optical fibers could produce femtosecond parabolic pulses (a few hundreds fs) modern femtosecond lasers and commercially available fibers.

Intensity-Modulated Optical Fiber Sensor for AC Magnetic Field Detection

2015

An erbium-doped (Er3+) fiber optic laser is proposed for sensing alternated magnetic fields by measuring the laser intensity modulation. The sensor is fabricated using two partially overlapped narrow-band fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and a section of doped fiber in a Fabry–Perot configuration. Laser power stability and bandwidth are studied while changing the overlap. A bulk rod of TbDyFe, a magnetostrictive material, is glued to both the FBGs and the laser wavelength and power are modulated according to the magnetic field. Acquisition and processing are done using virtual instrumentation. Results have shown the possibility of detecting 11.18 $\mu \text{T}_{\mathrm {{rms}}}/\surd $ Hz for an…

Fiber-pigtailed temperature sensors based on dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide-ring resonators.

2012

We demonstrate optical fiber-pigtailed temperature sensors based on dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguide-ring resonators (DLSPP-WRRs), whose transmission depends on the ambient temperature. The DLSPP-WRR-based temperature sensors represent polymer ridge waveguides (~1×1 µm(2) in cross section) forming 5-µm-radius rings coupled to straight waveguides fabricated by UV-lithography on a 50-nm-thick gold layer atop a 2.3-µm-thick CYTOP layer covering a Si wafer. A broadband light source is used to characterize the DLSPP-WRR wavelength-dependent transmission in the range of 1480-1600 nm and to select the DLSPP-WRR component for temperature sensing. In- and out-coupling single-mod…

Tunable Dual-Wavelength Thulium-Doped Fiber Laser Based on FBGs and a Hi-Bi FOLM

2017

A tunable dual-wavelength thulium doped fiber laser is demonstrated experimentally. For the first time for the 2- $\mu \text{m}$ wavelength band we propose the independent tuning of the generated laser lines based on fiber Bragg gratings and the use of a Hi-Bi fiber optic loop mirror for the fine adjustment of the cavity losses to obtain stable dual-wavelength operation. Dual-wavelength laser generation with the laser lines separation in the range from 0.3 to 6.5 nm is obtained. The laser emission exhibits an optical signal-to-noise ratio better than 56 dB. Improved stability with output power fluctuations less than 1 dB is observed in dual-wavelength generation with equal power of lines.

2010

[EN] A dual wavelength fiber laser source based on two cascaded phase-shifted fiber Bragg gratings is presented The gratings are written in an erbium-doped fiber each configuring the cavity of a distributed feedback fiber laser The spacing between lasing modes is controlled dynamically by the use of piezoelectric actuators A continuous tuning range of 5-724 pm of the wavelength difference which is equivalent to a photodetected 072-92 GHz range is obtained Efficient generation from the L to the W microwave and millimeter bands has been achieved by heterodyne photodetection of the dual-wavelength optical signal (C) 2010 Elsevier BV All rights reserved

Heat and mass transfer analysis in single cell of PEFC using different PEM and GDL at higher temperature

2019

Abstract According to the H2 and fuel cell road map in Japan, the target operating temperature of polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) should be 90 °C from 2020 to 2025. In this study, the impact of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) and gas diffusion layer (GDL)'s thickness on heat and mass transfer characteristics as well as power generation performance of PEFC is investigated at operating temperature of 90 °C. The in-plane temperature distributions on anode and cathode separator are also measured using thermograph. As a result, it is observed that the increase in power from 1 W to 5 W at the current density of 0.80 A/cm2 as well as even temperature distribution within 1 °C can be obtaine…
