Fast response vibration sensor based on Bragg gratings written in tapered core fibres

2007

Bragg gratings written in tapered core fibres permit a direct measure of mechanical vibrations with a time response better than 10 µs. The intrinsic properties of the sensors lead to a simple interrogation technique and wavelength multiplexing capacity. The sensor system is operated at 800 nm and is compact and low-cost.

P-491 - Sensitivity to changes during antidepressant treatment: a comparison of unidimensional depression rating scales in patients with minor depres…

2012

In the efficacy evaluation of antidepressant treatments the total score of the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) is still regarded as the’gold standard’. Studies suggest that unidimensional subscales of the HAMD, which capture the core depressive symptoms, outperform the full HAMD regarding the detection of antidepressant treatment effects. The present study compared several unidimensional subscales of the HAMD and the Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (IDS) regarding their sensitivity to changes in depression symptoms in a sample of patients with minor depression (MIND). Biweekly IDS-C28 and HAMD17 data from 287 patients of a 10-week randomised, placebo-controlled trial comparin…

An Innovative Pricing Method for Telecommunication Services Pricing through American Options

2009

With the evolution of telecommunication networks and of their services the role of service provider is changed, so nowadays there is a coexistence of Network Operators and Virtual Operators. The difference between these players is not in the way they offer a service but primarily in their economic objectives and risk attitudes. Essentially, Network Operators own their infrastructures and typically have to sustain both fixed costs (CAPEX) and recurrent costs (OPEX), while Virtual Operators may have a simpler cost structure, mainly consisting of OPEX for the hire of network resources. Since these two operators can provide the same service in two different markets, their objectives differ subs…

American Options Based Service Pricing For Virtual Operators

2008

In the recent years, the role of service provider has split into two broad categories: Network Operators, offering services over their networks, and Virtual Operators, providing services over leased resources. What differentiates these players is to a minor extent a matter of enhanced service offer, and primarily a matter of economic objectives and risk attitudes. Essentially, Network Operators own their infrastructures and typically have to sustain both fixed costs (CAPEX) and recurrent costs (OPEX), while Virtual Operators may have a simpler cost structure, mainly consisting of OPEX for hiring the network. Correspondingly, the objectives of these players may differ profoundly: on one hand…

MonPaaS: An Adaptive Monitoring Platformas a Service for Cloud Computing Infrastructures and Services

2015

This paper presents a novel monitoring architecture addressed to the cloud provider and the cloud consumers. This architecture offers a monitoring platform-as-a-Service to each cloud consumer that allows to customize the monitoring metrics. The cloud provider sees a complete overview of the infrastructure whereas the cloud consumer sees automatically her cloud resources and can define other resources or services to be monitored. This is accomplished by means of an adaptive distributed monitoring architecture automatically deployed in the cloud infrastructure. This architecture has been implemented and released under GPL license to the community as “MonPaaS”, open source software for integra…

Kata Containers: An Emerging Architecture for Enabling MEC Services in Fast and Secure Way

2019

New coming applications will be only possible through Mobile Edge Servers deployed in proximity of the mobile users. Due to the user's mobility and server's workload, service migration will be an integral part of the services. For this reason, a standardized architecture should be designed to accomplish a workload migration in a secure and timely manner. Most research done to date has focused on the use of either virtual machine (VM) or container or a mix of both recently. A final solution might be an architecture only having the advantages of both technologies as the security of the VM and the speed of the containers. Custom solutions, actually, by using both technologies, need continuous …

Human dental pulp cell apoptosis: immunohistochemical study after applying orthodontic traction.

2012

The aim of this study was to compare human dental pulp stress and programmed cell death after 3 and 6 months of orthodontic treatments by assessing the degree of apoptosis and related proteins. Human dental pulps were collected from twenty young patients orthodontically treated by Straight Wire technique. Samples were fixed, paraffin-embedded and processed for histology and immunohistochemistry using anti-heat shock protein 60 kDa (Hsp60), -caspase 3, -caspase 9, and -PCNA antibodies, as well as TUNEL reactions. Moreover, we performed immunoprecipitation for Hsp60 and caspase 3, and for Hsp60 and caspase 9, from paraffin extracted tissues. Increased levels of both caspases and Hsp60 occurre…

Virtual three-dimensional model of the subsoil of the church of St. Maria Maddalena d'Alga in Palermo, using high-resolution GPR surveys

2022

The church of Santa Maria Maddalena d'Alga is located in the historic center of Palermo and belongs to the monumental complex of the military district of San Giacomo, in the ancient western fortified area of the city. Today the area hosts a vast military complex, seat of the Command of the Carabinieri Legion of Sicily. The church is elevated with respect to the current floor. During some maintenance works of the church, for the installation of air conditioners, some georadar surveys were carried out to verify the presence of crypts or tombs under the pavement. The investigations made it possible to reconstruct a 3D georadar model and to identify some anomalies under the pavement. Some of th…

New digital instruments for the community building in housing cooperatives

2019

The research starts from a study carried out for Confcooperative Habitat, which focused on the systematic analysis of the materials produced for the launch of a new season of the cooperative movement. The goal is to improve the active action on communities for a tangible social impact able to propose a model that knows how to enhance the common urban spaces within the interventions. Finding the new needs and the new processes that characterize living, outlined also in their condominium and urban dimension of ‘common good’, therefore of ‘common housing’. The procedural model proposed and modulated in an evolved platform, seeks to multiply the common practices of living in the city and live i…
