Predicting gully occurrence at watershed scale: Comparing topographic indices and multivariate statistical models

2020

In this study, the ability of five topographic indices to predict the gully trajectories observed in two adjacent watersheds located in Sicily (Italy) was evaluated. Two of these indices, named MSPI and MTWI, as far as we know, have never been employed to this aim. They were obtained by multiplying the stream power index (SPI) and the topographic wetness index (TWI), respectively, by the convergence index (CI). The predictive ability of the topographic indices was measured by using both cut-off independent (AUC: area under the receiver operating characteristic curve) and dependent statistics (Cohen's kappa index κ, sensitivity, specificity). These statistics were calculated also for 100 MAR…

Application of the group method of data handling (GMDH) approach for landslide susceptibility zonation using readily available spatial covariates

2022

Abstract Landslide susceptibility (LS) mapping is an essential tool for landslide risk assessment. This study aimed to provide a new approach with better performance for landslide mapping and adopting readily available variables. In addition, it investigates the capability of a state-of-the-art model developed using the group method of data handling (GMDH) to spatially model LS. Furthermore, hybridized models of GMDH were developed using different metaheuristic algorithms. The study area was the Bonghwa region of South Korea, for which an accurate landslide inventory dataset is available. We considered a total of 13 spatial covariates (altitude, slope, aspect, topographic wetness index, val…

Direct Bragg grating writing in a hybrid PDMS/silica photonic crystal fiber

2011

Infiltration of materials into the air holes of the PCFs can potentially manipulate their optical properties creating a new category of fibers termed as hybrid PCFs [1] and many devices based on hybrid PCFs have been developed [2–5]. Recently, a hybrid PCF with poly-dimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer inclusions has been demonstrated [6]. PDMS is widely used in the area of photonics and optofluidics. It is highly transparent with a refractive index ∼1.41, conserving the total internal reflection guiding mechanism of the hybrid PCF. When PDMS is irradiated with UV light its refractive index increases [7]. In this paper we present the first example of a Bragg grating directly written using UV l…

Open-source software tools for measuring resources consumption and DASH metrics

2020

When designing and deploying multimedia systems, it is essential to accurately know about the necessary requirements and the Quality of Service (QoS) offered to the customers. This paper presents two open-source software tools that contribute to these key needs. The first tool is able to measure and register resources consumption metrics for any Windows program (i.e. process id), like the CPU, GPU and RAM usage. Unlike the Task Manager, which requires manual visual inspection for just a subset of these metrics, the developed tool runs on top of the Powershell to periodically measure these metrics, calculate statistics, and register them in log files. The second tool is able to measure QoS m…

Prospective validation of a noninvasive index for predicting liver fibrosis in hepatitis C virus-infected liver transplant recipients

2009

We previously developed a mathematical model, the Hospital Universitario La Fe (HULF) index, as an alternative to protocol liver biopsy (PLB) to estimate significant fibrosis (SF) in patients who underwent liver transplantation (LT) for liver damage caused by chronic HCV infection. In the present study, we sought to validate this noninvasive index. The commonly derived clinical and laboratory data for calculating the HULF index were prospectively collected over 2.7 years from patients undergoing LT and PLB. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and diagnostic capacity were evaluated with receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. Biopsy was performed …

The interface of clinical psychopharmacology and psychopathology.

1989

Four areas of common interest for clinical psychopharmacology and psychopathology are identified: (1) the diagnostic-based approach in clinical psychopharmacology; (2) the characterization of psychotropic drugs according the main psychopathologically defined target symptoms; (3) prediction of treatment response; (4) development of rating scales. The current state of research strategies in these areas is discussed and the need for new strategies is stressed. In particular, diagnosis-based research strategies in clinical psychopharmacology are not fully justified by empirical data; an alternative approach is discussed.

A Framework to Evaluate Autonomic Behaviours for Intelligent Truck Parking

2016

This paper presents a multi-agent platform to evaluate different strategies to manage the negotiated management of parking spaces in road rest areas. The system dynamically adapts itself to the preferences and needs of the drivers of goods about parking requests. The system is shown to be robust to incidents regarding the closure of road rest areas and allows a conversational interaction of new parking requests through an Android based mobile application.

Comparison of two needle models in terms of bevel deformation during truncal block of the inferior alveolar nerve

2007

Objectives: To evaluate the differences in terms of bevel deformation between two types of needle of the same length and external caliber, but with different internal diameters, during truncal block of the inferior alveolar nerve. Study design: Four operators performed truncal block of the inferior alveolar nerve and infiltrating anesthesia of the buccal nerve for the extraction of a lower third molar in 266 patients. The truncal block was carried out using a standard 27G x 35 mm needle with an internal caliber of 0.215 mm, or a 27G x 35 mm XL Monoprotect® needle with an internal caliber of 0.265 mm. The infiltrating anesthesia was made with a Monoprotect® or XL Monoprotect® needle, both wi…

p53 Isoform D133p53a: A Novel Transcriptional Enhancer of T-Cell Effector Function to Improve T-Cell Based Cancer Immunotherapy

2018

Abstract Background: Adoptive transfer of genetically modified T lymphocytes with tumor antigen-specific receptor has proven efficacy in cancer immunotherapy. However, in many patients the overall benefit is still limited due to various tumor escape mechanisms. Cell damage and metabolic/hypoxic stress in the tumor microenvironment (TME) can lead to a dysfunctional anti-tumor T cell response called T cell senescence. The tumor suppressor TP53 is a master molecule in the regulation of cell cycle and senescence. Few studies have demonstrated the critical role of p53 isoforms in the regulation of cellular senescence mainly in tumor cells. However, their role in tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (T…
