The effect of climate on Burgundy vintage quality rankings.
2019
Aim: Based on consensus rankings from prominent rating authorities, we examined the importance of a suite of climatic variables, organized by winegrape phenological stage, in distinguishing between high- and low-ranked vintages in Burgundy. Methods and Results: Vintage ratings of Burgundy wines acquired from 12 sources were evaluated to develop consensus rankings for red and white wines from 1961–2015. Climate variables (air temperature, precipitation, degree-day accumulations, etc.) were organized by mean phenological stage and compared between good and poor vintages using Mann-Whitney U tests and multivariate stepwise discriminant function analysis. High temperatures, particularly during t…
Retinal image quality and visual stimuli processing by simulation of partial eye cataract
2016
Visual stimuli were demonstrated on a 4.3’’ mobile phone screen inside a “Virtual Reality” adapter that allowed separation of the left and right eye visual fields. Contrast of the retina image thus can be controlled by the image on the phone screen and parallel to that at appropriate geometry by the AC voltage applied to scattering PDLC cell inside the adapter. Such optical pathway separation allows to demonstrate to both eyes spatially variant images, that after visual binocular fusion acquire their characteristic indications. As visual stimuli we used grey and different color (two opponent components to vision – red-green in L*a*b* color space) spatially periodical stimuli for left and ri…
Nusinersen in adult patients with 5q spinal muscular atrophy: a multicenter observational cohorts’ study
2021
ABSTRACTObjectiveTo assess safety and efficacy of nusinersen in adult 5q spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) patients.MethodsPatients older than 15 years and followed at least for 6 months with one motor scale (Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale Expanded, HFMSE; Revised Upper Limb module, RULM) in five referral centers were included. Clinical and patients’ global impression of change (CGI-C and PGI-C) were recorded in treated patients at the last visit. Functional scales (Egen Klassification, EK2; Revised Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Functional Rating Scale, ALSFRS-R) and the percent-predicted forced vital capacity were collected when available.ResultsSeventy-nine SMA patients (39 treated with n…
Calibration of a knock prediction model for the combustion of a gasoline-natural gas mixture
2009
Gaseous fuels, such as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Natural Gas (NG), thank to their good mixing capabilities, allow complete and cleaner combustion than normal gasoline, resulting in lower pollutant emissions and particulate matter. Moreover natural gas, which is mainly constituted by methane, whose molecule has the highest hydrogen/carbon ratio, leads also to lower ozone depleting emissions. The authors in a previous work (1) experienced the simultaneous combustion of gasoline and natural gas in a bi-fuel S.I. engine, exploiting so the high knock resistance of methane to run the engine with an ‘overall stoichiometric’ mixture (thus lowering fuel consumption and emissions) and better …
Gully Erosion Susceptibility Mapping Using Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines—Replications and Sample Size Scenarios
2019
Soil erosion is a serious problem affecting numerous countries, especially, gully erosion. In the current research, GIS techniques and MARS (Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines) algorithm were considered to evaluate gully erosion susceptibility mapping among others. The study was conducted in a specific section of the Gorganroud Watershed in Golestan Province (Northern Iran), covering 2142.64 km2 which is intensely influenced by gully erosion. First, Google Earth images, field surveys, and national reports were used to provide a gully-hedcut evaluation map consisting of 307 gully-hedcut points. Eighteen gully erosion conditioning factors including significant geoenvironmental and morph…
Hyperspectral imager calibration using ceramic color tiles (Conference Presentation)
2019
Sets of chromatic and neutral ceramic tiles are widely used as measurement standards for reflectance factors in color applications. The usual instrument for color measurements is a spectrophotometer that measures the tiles using either a 0:45 or 45:0 illumination and viewing geometry, or with an integrating sphere in order to measure the reflectance factor in either specular excluded or specular included conditions. Having the corresponding measurements of the tile set from a calibrated instrument, systematic errors in the instrument under study can be diagnosed and corrected using a model of the errors and fitting it to the difference in measurements. One such is the Berns-Petersen model, …
Simulation-Based Performance Study of e-Commerce Web Server System – Results for FIFO Scheduling
2013
The chapter concerns the issue of overloaded Web server performance evaluation using a simulation-based approach. We focus on a Business-to-Consumer (B2C) environment and consider server performance both from the perspective of computer system efficiency and e-business profitability. Results of simulation experiments for the Web server system under First-In-First-Out (FIFO) scheduling are discussed. Much attention has been paid to the analysis of the impact of a limited server system capacity on business-related performance metrics.
The Myths of and Solutions for Android OS Controlled and Secure Environment
2015

Android is the most popular mobile operating system nowadays both for smartphones and tablets. This fact creates many not fully recognized risks. Often even advanced users naive think that using antivirus software, firewall, encryption, updates, as well as avoiding potentially risky sites and applications are enough for security. This list is not full, but nevertheless each its item in most cases only conceals an illusion of reaching the security. Authors have summarized and pointed out several actual Android security issues and have proposed a number of possible solutions.

…
Web Monitoring System and Gateway for Serial Communication PLC
2012
Abstract An industrial process requires interacting with the rest of the plant, being able to exchange data with other devices and monitoring systems in order to optimize production, reporting information and providing control capabilities to distant users. Internet, and, especially web browsers are an excellent tool to provide information for remote users, allowing not only monitoring but also controlling the industrial process as an SCADA software or HMI system. The proposed system does not need specific proprietary software and its associated license costs. In this work, a webserver system is implemented under a Freescale microcontroller, acting as a gateway for a simple PLC with single …
Spectral properties of a variable period Bragg grating including a segment isolated of external deformations
2017
In this work the behavior of a Bragg grating of variable period (usually called a linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating — CFBG) is analyzed when a small portion of it is fixed so that its properties remain unchanged, while the rest of the grating is affected by a longitudinal deformation. The system was simulated using the Transfer Matrix Method to obtain its behavior under different levels of deformation and it was observed the appearance of negative peaks in the spectral response (transmission peaks). The analysis allowed characterizing the system with different sizes of the fixed portion (defects) (0.5 to 6 mm), for a grating with 10 cm long and 3 nm spectral width.
