Developing and using tasks for the assessment of speaking

2019

This article provides an overview of the development and use of tasks for the assessment of speaking. It first addresses the key role of the assessment of the skill of speaking within language assessment in general and in the context of teaching and learning foreign languages. Then, it discusses how social changes and research have reshaped the way speaking is defined and operationalized, and focuses on how speaking can be assessed more validly and reliably today. The central role of tasks is also discussed, together with the importance of taking into consideration the implications and impact of different task characteristics. Some recommendations for the development of useful and meaningfu…

Research Directions in the Study of Gaming-Related Escapism: a Commentary to Melodia, Canale, and Griffiths (2020)

2021

AbstractEscapism motivations and related processes (e.g., avoidance, dissociation, relaxation, and emotion dysregulation) have been identified as risk factors for problematic gaming. However, the escapism construct has often been poorly conceptualized and operationalized in assessment instruments. In their systematic review, Melodia et al. (2020) proposed that conceptualizing escapism as an avoidant coping strategy could provide a sound basis for further study of problematic gaming. In this commentary, we critically examine some terminological and conceptual issues in relation to escapism to guide future research.

The concept of genre within the critical approach to information systems development

2001

Abstract Jurgen Habermas' Critical Social Theory is regarded as a potential approach to information systems development (hereinafter referred to as the critical approach). However, the theoretical promise of this approach has not yet been operationalized in practice. This paper discusses the potential of the genre theory of organizational communication as a conceptual basis for doing so, using two studies that applied genre concepts to analyses and debates on document management. In particular, the paper illustrates the capability of genre concepts in responding to pleas for three types of rationality — communicative, emancipatory, and formal — considered fundamental to any method of inform…

Negative Party Identifications as Out-Group Perceptions in Multi-Party Systems How Do They Affect Vote Choice?

2015

Although negative party identification is part of the original party identification concept by Campbell et al., it has been rarely analyzed in empirical studies. Further, the few existing studies lack a coherent conceptualization of negative partisanship, and focus in their analyses almost exclusively on negative party evaluations. This paper clearly distinguishes between negative party identification and evaluation, conceptualizing both concepts coherently within the social identity framework. In addition, new insights are presented by conceptualizing and operationalizing negative party identifications as out-group perceptions of political parties (based on new German data from 2013). The …

A Novel Framework of an Expert System by integrating Capability Approach and BRB to Evaluate E-Government Services

2015

Capability approach is hard to operationalize and capabilities are sometimes difficult to reduce into the individual level. We describe our approach to solve these problems paired with an adequate ICT infrastructure and believe that the impact of concrete eGovernment services will become more visible and available. Citizens can inspect it, professionals can target their re-engineering on failure cases, learn from best cases, and researchers can compare different types of eGovernment. The solving of operationalisation will also strengthen the capability approach, by extending its scope from macro theory towards more easy application on the institutional and organizational levels. The concept of major depression. I. Descriptive comparison of six competing operational definitions including ICD-10 and DSM-III-R.

1991

All operationalized diagnostic systems contain a diagnostic category, which corresponds to the concept of major depression. Yet, these corresponding definitions are not identical. Up to now, no comprehensive comparisons of the competing diagnoses have been published. We will therefore present a series of studies, describing six different operational definitions of major depression according to their content and construction and empirically comparing them in large inpatient and outpatient samples. This first paper presents a descriptive comparison of the definitions given in the Feighner Diagnostic Criteria, the Research Diagnostic Criteria, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Di…

Die neurotische Depression - Eine Krankheit ohne Diagnose oder eine Diagnose ohne Glossar?/ Neurotic depression – a disease without a diagnosis or a …

2003

With the transition from ICD-9 to ICD-10 the diagnosis of neurotic depression was omitted. Freyberger showed that this diagnosis in the ICD-10 was replaced mainly by the diagnoses of dysthymia, recurrent depression and depressive episode (with this ranking of frequency). A renowned German psychiatrist criticized this change as replacing an unsubstantiated dichotomic with an unsubstantiated dimensional model. The same was the case with the change from DSM-II to DSM-III: Torgersen criticized here that the heterogeneous diagnosis of neurotic depression was basically replaced by the similarly heterogeneous diagnosis of major depression. The underlying rationale behind the omission of the tradit…

Teaching Public Administration Abroad through the Fulbright Specialist Program

2011

The purpose of this article is to promote the benefits of the Fulbright Specialist Program—which was created in 2001 as a short-term complement to the Fulbright Scholar Program—and to encourage more public administration scholars to consider teaching abroad. After providing an overview of the Fulbright Specialist Program and the collaborative teaching approach we used for the preparation and delivery of instructional materials, it presents a number of lessons learned from the perspective of the Fulbright Specialist and the host institution for maximizing the experience of teaching abroad. This article also is dedicated to the work of Fulbright, which has pursued its mission to increase mutu…

Comparative Analysis Between Portugal and Spain

2021

This chapter comparatively analyzes Portugal and Spain in relation to the implementation of the IPSAS-based accounting system as two European continental countries embedded in the Napoleonic administrative tradition and considered “latecomers” in the NPM reforms. It adds knowledge about the differences in the harmonization process and in the operationalization of the new accounting system in these particular contexts. Main findings show that IPSAS and the IFRS-based business accounting system have been important references for the new public sector accounting system in both countries. On the other hand, although Spain is more experienced in operationalizing the new IPSAS-based accounting sy…
