Abstract Numerical experiments are carried out to study the effects of continents on the structure of thermal convection in the mantle. The mantle is modelled by a viscous fluid occupying a horizontally extended rectangular 2-D region of aspect ratio 10:1. Continents are treated as thick rigid heat-conducting plates placed in the mantle, with free-slip and with no-slip conditions. Continents restrict the heat release from the underlying mantle; the mantle material heats up and becomes lighter; as a result, a hot upwelling flow replaces downwelling. Bulk stable nitrogen isotope values of the carbonate-bound organic matrix in bivalve shells (δ15NCBOM) are increasingly used to assess past food web dynamics, track anthropogenic nitrogen pollution and reconstruct hydrographic changes. However, it remains unresolved if the δ15NCBOM values are also affected by directed ontogenetic trends which can bias ecological and environmental interpretations. This very aspect is tested here with modern and fossil specimens of the long-lived ocean quahog, Arctica islandica, collected from different sites and water depths in the NE Atlantic Ocean. Linear theory of the Rayleigh–Taylor instability at a discontinuous surface of a relativistic flow

We address the linear stability of a discontinuous surface of a relativistic flow in the context of a jet that oscillates radially as it propagates. The restoring force of the oscillation is expected to drive a Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) at the interface between the jet and its cocoon. We perform a linear analysis and numerical simulations of the growth of the RTI in the transverse plane to the jet flow with a uniform acceleration. In this system, an inertia force due to the uniform acceleration acts as the restoring force for the oscillation. In this paper, we study the statistics of phase processes and random frequency modulation (FM) noise encountered in double Rayleigh fading channels. The Rayleigh processes making up the double Rayleigh channel are assumed to be independent but not necessarily identically distributed. The Doppler power spectral densities of these processes are supposed to be symmetric about the carrier frequency. Radiation effects on optical frequency domain reflectometry fiber-based sensor

International audience; We investigate the radiation effects on germanosilicate optical fiber acting as the sensing element of optical frequency domain reflectometry devices. Thanks to a new setup permitting to control temperature during irradiation, we evaluate the changes induced by 10 keV x rays on their Rayleigh response up to 1 MGy in a temperature range from −40°C up to 75°C. Irradiation at fixed temperature points out that its measure is reliable during both irradiation and the recovery process. Mixed temperature and radiation measurements show that changing irradiation temperature leads to an error in distributed measurements that depends on the calibration procedure. These results …

In this paper, we investigate the second-order statistics of Hoyt fading channels under non isotropic scattering scenarios. Assuming an asymmetrical Doppler power spectral density (PSD), we derive, in the form of single finite-range integrals, expressions for the level-crossing rate (LCR) and average duration of fades (ADF). These new results are then applied to obtain the LCR and ADF of selection combining (SC) diversity over non-isotropic Hoyt channels.
