Snapshots of a solid-state transformation: Coexistence of three phases trapped in one crystal

2016

Crystal-to-crystal transformations have been crucial in the understanding of solid-state processes, since these may be studied in detail by means of single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) techniques. The description of the mechanisms and potential intermediates of those processes remains very challenging. In fact, solid-state transient states have rarely been observed, at least to a sufficient level of detail. We have investigated the process of guest extrusion from the non-porous molecular material [Fe(bpp)(HL)](ClO)·1.5CHO (bpp = 2,6-bis(pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine; HL = 2,6-bis(5-(2-methoxyphenyl)-pyrazol-3-yl)pyridine; CHO = acetone), which occurs through ordered diffusion of acetone in a c…

High-pressure theoretical and experimental study of HgWO4

2011

HgWO 4 at ambient pressure is characterized using a combination of ab initio calculations, X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering measurements. The effect of low pressure and temperature on the structural stability is analysed. Extending our ab initio study to the range of higher pressures, a sequence of stable phases up to 30GPa is proposed. © 2011 Taylor & Francis.

Discrete wavelet transform based multispectral filter array demosaicking

2013

International audience; The idea of colour filter array may be adapted to multi-spectral image acquisition by integrating more filter types into the array, and developing associated demosaicking algorithms. Several methods employing discrete wavelet transform (DWT) have been proposed for CFA demosaicking. In this work, we put forward an extended use of DWT for mul-tispectral filter array demosaicking. The extension seemed straightforward, however we observed striking results. This work contributes to better understanding of the issue by demonstrating that spectral correlation and spatial resolution of the images exerts a crucial influence on the performance of DWT based demosaicking.

Blue autofluorescence in protein aggregates “lighted on” by UV induced oxidation

2019

Oxidation of amino acid side chains in protein structure can be induced by UV irradiation leading to critical changes in molecular structure possibly modifying protein stability and bioactivity. Here we show, by using a combination of multiple spectroscopic techniques and Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging, that UV-light exposure induces irreversible oxidation processes in Ubiquitin structure. In particular, the growth of a new autofluorescence peak in the blue region is detected, that we attribute to tyrosine oxidation products. Blue autofluorescence intensity is found to progressively increase also during aggregation processes leading to the formation of aggregates of non-amyloid nature. Signi…

Duloxetine serum concentrations and clinical effects. Data from a therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) survey.

2009

INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to relate drug concentrations in serum and clinical effects in patients treated with the new antidepressant duloxetine. METHODS Data were obtained from a newly established therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) survey. Duloxetine was measured using HPLC with UV detection and clinical effects by the clinical global impressions (CGI) scale for improvement. RESULTS The study included 103 depressed inpatients (69% female). Patients under duloxetine monotherapy who were very much improved according to CGI had significantly (p<0.05) higher serum levels than patients with moderate, minimal or lacking improvement (mean+/-SD and range, 93+/-53 ng/mL and 30-182 ng/mL…

Inkjet printing methodologies for drug screening

2010

We show for the first time a contactless, low-cost, and rapid drug screening methodology by employing inkjet printing for molecular dispensing in a microarray format. Picoliter drops containing a model substrate (D-glucose)/ inhibitor (D-glucal) couple were accurately dispensed on a single layer consisting of the enzymatic target (glucose oxidase) covalently linked to a functionalized silicon oxide support. A simple colorimetric detection method allowed one to prove the screening capability of the microarray with the possibility to assay with high reproducibility at the single spot level. Measurements of the optical signal as a function of concentration and of time verified the occurrence a…

Triplet stabilization for enhanced drug photorelease from sunscreen-based photocages

2021

[EN] Recently, sunscreen-based drug photocages have been introduced to provide UV protection to photoactive drugs, thus increasing their photosafety. Here, combined experimental and theoretical studies performed on a photocage based on the commercial UVA filter avobenzone (AB) and on the photosensitizing non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug ketoprofen (KP) are presented unveiling the photophysical processes responsible for the light-triggered release. Particular attention is paid to solvent stabilization of the drug and UV filter excited states, respectively, which leads to a switching between the triplet excited state energies of the AB and KP units. Most notably, we show that the stabiliz…

Hub-Centered Gene Network Reconstruction Using Automatic Relevance Determination

2012

Network inference deals with the reconstruction of biological networks from experimental data. A variety of different reverse engineering techniques are available; they differ in the underlying assumptions and mathematical models used. One common problem for all approaches stems from the complexity of the task, due to the combinatorial explosion of different network topologies for increasing network size. To handle this problem, constraints are frequently used, for example on the node degree, number of edges, or constraints on regulation functions between network components. We propose to exploit topological considerations in the inference of gene regulatory networks. Such systems are often…

EUSO Science

2005

EUSO is a mission to explore the extreme universe by the probe of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (LTHECRs) and LTHE neutrinos [1]. EUSO monitors a gigantic volume of atmosphere from Space and measures showers induced by UHECRs and UHE neutrinos. Scientifically, it is important to measure the energy spectrum of UHECRs well beyond GZK energy with high statistics. EUSO ensures the observation of UHECRs up to 10(21) eV even in the case of GZK mechanism working [2-7], and gives us a clear picture of the existence / non-existence of the GZK effect and the behavior of the spectrum beyond GZK energy, which represents the contributions from nearby sources. The anisotropy study of UHECR arrival direct…
