HOW MANY FUSION BARRIERS?

Fusion barrier distributions for the 20 Ne + 112,116,118 Sn systems have been extracted from quasi-elastic scattering cross sections measured at the Warsaw HIL Cyclotron. Results are compared to coupled-channels calculations performed with the CCFULL code. The overall widths of the distributions are reproduced on taking account of the low-lying collective states of the target and projectile but some puzzling discrepancies in their shapes remain to be explained.

rp-process nucleosynthesis at extreme temperature and density conditions

We present nuclear reaction network calculations to investigate the influence of nuclear structure on the rp-process between Ge and Sn in various scenarios. Due to the lack of experimental data for neutron-deficient nuclei in this region, we discuss currently available model predictions for nuclear masses and deformations as well as methods of calculating reaction rates (Hauser-Feshbach) and beta-decay rates (QRPA and shell model). In addition, we apply a valence nucleon (NpNn) correlation scheme for the prediction of masses and deformations. Gamow-Teller Transitions in Proton Rich Exotic pf-shell Nuclei Deduced from Mirror Transitions

The rp‐process nucleosynthesis proceeds through nuclei near the proton drip‐line, in which Gamow‐Teller (GT) transitions starting from unstable pf‐shell nuclei play important roles. In the β‐decay study of these nuclei, half‐lives can be measured rather accurately. On the other hand, in the high‐resolution (3He, t) charge‐exchange reactions on mirror nuclei, individual GT transitions can be studied up to high excitations. For the accurate study of the GT transition strengths in the A = 52, T = 2, system, we compare and combine the β‐decay study of the proton‐rich nucleus 52Ni and the 52Cr(3He, t) measurement assuming the isospin symmetry of the Tz = ±2→±1 transitions.

First Accurate Normalization of the β -delayed α Decay of N16 and Implications for the C12(α,γ)O16 Astrophysical Reaction Rate

The C-12(alpha,gamma)O-16 reaction plays a central role in astrophysics, but its cross section at energies relevant for astrophysical applications is only poorly constrained by laboratory data. The reduced a width, gamma(11), of the bound 1(-) level in O-16 is particularly important to determine the cross section. The magnitude of gamma(11) is determined via sub-Coulomb a-transfer reactions or the beta-delayed a decay of N-16, but the latter approach is presently hampered by the lack of sufficiently precise data on the beta-decay branching ratios. Muon capture in a general class of weak models.

We study muon capture by /sup 12/C in a general class of weak models. There is always a parameter characteristic of the weak model that can be extracted in a nuclear-model-independent way from the average polarization P/sub av/, the longitudinal polarization P/sub L//sup N/ and the asymmetry ..cap alpha.. in the angular distribution of recoils. For a less general class of models the asymmetry ..cap alpha.. is unnecessary. Using the experimental values of P/sub L//sup N/ and P/sub av/ we get a lower bound for the mass of the right-handed gauge boson of the left-right-symmetric model, M/sub W//sub R/> or =2.5ML, in a nuclear-model-independent way. Global polarization of Λ and Λ¯ hyperons in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN= 2.76 and 5.02 TeV

The global polarization of the $\Lambda$ and $\overline\Lambda$ hyperons is measured for Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 and 5.02 TeV recorded with the ALICE at the LHC. The results are reported differentially as a function of collision centrality and hyperon's transverse momentum ($p_{\rm{T}}$) for the range of centrality 5-50%, $0.5 < p_{\rm{T}} <5$ GeV/$c$, and rapidity $|y|<0.5$. The hyperon global polarization averaged for Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 2.76 and 5.02 TeV is found to be consistent with zero, $\langle P_{\rm{H}}\rangle$ (%) $\approx$ 0.01 $\pm$ 0.06 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.03 (syst.) in the collision centrality range 15-50%, where the largest signal i…

Baryon transition form factors at the pole

Electromagnetic resonance properties are uniquely defined at the pole and do not depend on the separation of the resonance from background or the decay channel. Photon-nucleon branching ratios are nowadays often quoted at the pole, and we generalize the considerations to the case of virtual photons. We derive and compare relations for nucleon to baryon transition form factors both for the Breit-Wigner and the pole positions. Using the MAID2007 and SAID SM08 partial wave analyses of pion electroproduction data, we compare the $G_M$, $G_E$, and $G_C$ form factors for the $\Delta(1232)$ resonance excitation at the Breit-Wigner resonance and pole positions up to $Q^2=5$ GeV$^2$. Meson production inp+U, O+U and S+U interactions at 200 GeV/nucleon

Meson production in proton, oxygen and sulphur interactions with uranium targets at 200 GeV/nucleon is studied. We measure the inclusive meson cross-section d σ/dPT2 and its evolution fromp+U to S+U. The cross-section fitted with an exponential gives an inverse slopePT0 of the order of 210 MeV/c. As a function of the neutral transverse energy,PT0 values show a slight rise followed by a plateau. The normalized difference (σ+−σ−)/σ− between positive and negative meson cross-sections is found to increase withET.
