Novel biosensoric devices based on molecular protein hetero-multilayer films

1997

We have developed a novel concept for the modification of technical surfaces with molecularly well-organized layers of bioorganic components. A molecular construction set has been used to implement this concept which is based on molecularly stratified polyelectrolyte films as a structure decoupling protein layers from solid substrates. Utilizing this technology, one can start from a number of different substrates to obtain the same surface structures, on which protein hetero-multilayer films can be prepared to functionalize the interface for (potentially very different) purposes. We have demonstrated the viability of this concept by constructing a biosensor surface that was characterized by…

Transformation of vaterite nanoparticles to hydroxycarbonate apatite in a hydrogel scaffold: relevance to bone formation.

2020

Biomimetic materials have been gaining increasing importance for use as bone biomaterials, because they may provide regenerative alternatives for the use of autologous tissues for bone regeneration. We demonstrate a promising alternative for the use of biomimetic materials based on a biodegradable PEG hydrogel loaded with vaterite nanoparticles as mineral storage. Vaterite, the least stable CaCO3 polymorph, is stable enough to ensure the presence of a potential ion buffer for bone regeneration, but still has sufficient reactivity for the transformation from CaCO3 to hydroxyapatite (HA). A combination of powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared (FT…

Tunable radical scavenging activity of carbon nanotubes through sonication

2016

Abstract Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) having controlled radical scavenging activity have been achieved tuning the content of their lattice defects induced by an ultra-sound (us) treatment. The reactivity of CNTs, subjected to ultra-sonication for different time intervals, toward 1,1-diphenyl-2-pycryl (DPPH) and hydroxyl (•OH) radicals has been estimated and related to defect concentration, evaluated through Raman spectrometry. The radical scavenging efficiency of ultra-sound treated CNTs (us-CNTs) increases with increasing the content of the structural defects, suggesting that the defect resulting from us treatment can be capitalized to obtain an amplified and controlled radical scavenging activ…

Very high titanium content mesoporous silicas

2001

Titanium content in mesoporous titanosilicate catalysts has been modulated up to a minimum Si/Ti value of 1.9 by using complexing agents able to coordinate both Si and Ti atoms and harmonize the reactivity of the resulting precursors avoiding subsequent phase segregation and leading to chemically very homogeneous materials. Selective Photocatalytic Oxidation of 4-Methoxybenzyl Alcohol to p-Anisaldehyde in Organic-Free Water in a Continuous Annular Fixed Bed Reactor

2007

Photocatalytic oxidation of 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol to p-anisaldehyde was performed in water organic-free solutions by using a fixed bed continuous photoreactor containing Pyrex beads on which a TiO2 home prepared photocatalyst was supported. The influence of liquid flow rate, inlet alcohol concentration and catalyst amount on the photoprocess was studied. The highest selectivity to p-anisaldehyde was about 47% being CO2, the other main oxidation product; traces of 4-methoxybenzoic acid were also detected. The radiation field inside the photoreactor has been modelled by applying the Monte Carlo method thus allowing the determination of the local volumetric rate of photon absorption (LVRPA).…

A model of biomass char gasification describing the change in catalytic activity of ash

2012

A comprehensive description of catalytic effects during char gasification under various conditions relevant to biomass gasification was made. A three-parallel reaction model was proposed to describe the dynamic change in catalytic activity of ash during gasification of biomass char particles. Three different regimes of conversion were identified by analyzing char reactivity experiments conducted in a vertical TGA with nine biomasses under a wide range of operating conditions (temperature: 1023–1123 K, pressure: 0.1–3.0 MPa and gasification mixtures of CO2–CO–H2O–H2): (1) catalytic char gasification with deactivation of catalyst, (2) non-catalytic char gasification, and (3) catalytic char ga…

Passivity Breakdown: Development and Application of Local Chemical and Electrochemical Probe Methods

2018

Abstract The most identified classes of phenomena at the origin of the passivity breakdown and the electrochemical and chemical factors controlling the induced localized corrosion are summarized before introducing the scientific concepts at the origin of the design of the local probe techniques used in recent advances in understanding localized corrosion processes. Examples concerning the surface reactivity of aluminium alloys are presented to support a final discussion on the needs for experimental developments with capabilities to support modelling.

Structural and Kinetic DFT Characterization of Materials to Rationalize Catalytic Performance

2009

This review shortly discusses recent results obtained by the application of density functional theory for the calculations of the adsorption and diffusion properties of small molecules and their reactivity on heterogenous catalytic systems, in the ambit of the Nanocat project. Particular focus has been devoted to palladium catalysts, either in atomic or small cluster form. Some protocols have been tested to obtain efficient ways able to treat the electronic and geometric influence of supports like zeolites and carbon nanotubes on the catalytic properties of palladium. The hydroisomerization of cis-but-2-ene is discussed as model reaction on supported and unsupported Pd clusters. Some prelim…

Curb your neuroticism – Mindfulness mediates the link between neuroticism and subjective well-being

2015

Abstract Recent research has shown that mindfulness moderates the negative emotional reactivity associated with neuroticism. In two studies, we investigated how neuroticism and mindfulness are associated with subjective well-being (SWB), assuming a moderated mediation. In Study 1, 147 participants (74.2% female, M  = 34.3 years, SD  = 11.9) completed an online survey. Mindfulness partially mediated but did not moderate the relationship between neuroticism and SWB, indicating that low levels of mindfulness were partially accountable for lower SWB in individuals high in neuroticism. In Study 2, 108 participants (80.6% female, M  = 25.2 years, SD  = 6.6) completed daily diaries for 6 days. We …
