Teaching and learning to read in Afrikaans : teacher competence and computer-assisted support

This thesis is in the form of a monograph consisting of three distinct, but related studies. The three studies examined Grade 1 teachers’ knowledge and perceptions of reading instruction in classrooms in Namibia; and the use of GraphoGame in Afrikaans as a digital learning tool and as an intervention tool for struggling readers. Three data sets were collected: teachers (N = 132), children (N = 202) and struggling readers (N = 19). The results offered three main findings. Research Findings: The purpose of the present study was to examine the extent to which the quality of teacher–child interactions and teachers’ self-reported curriculum emphases are related to children’s reading skill development during their 1st school year. To accomplish this, we assessed the reading skills of 1,029 Finnish children (M age = 85.77 months) twice during Grade 1, and the children’s teachers (n = 91) completed questionnaires concerning their literacy-related curriculum emphases. Ievada uzdevumi skolēnu lasītprasmju attīstībai sākumskolas angļu valodas stundās

Lasīšanas prasmes tiek izmantotas, lai iegūtu un saglabātu informāciju un zināšanas. Tādēļ diplomdarba autore domā, ka skolēnu lasīšanas prasmes vajadzētu attīstīt sākumskolas angļu valodas stundās, piedaloties ievada uzdevumos. Pētījuma mērķis ir uzzināt, kā ievada uzdevumi palīdz jauniem skolēniem attīstīt viņu angļu valodas lasīšanas prasmes. Izvēlētā pētījuma metode ir atsevišķa gadījuma pētījums, īstenots Brīvajā Māras skolā 4. klasē.
