Simulation of granular organic fertilizer application by centrifugal spreader

2021

There is no specialized equipment designed to spread granular cylindrical organic fertilizer in the soil. There are also no rational recommendations available on how to spread this type of fertilizer. Mineral fertilizer spreaders are most often used for spreading granulated organic fertilizer. However, these fertilizers are significantly different from mineral fertilizers. Due to these differences, organic granular fertilizers often are spread unevenly, and the fertilizer does not reach the required working width. Furthermore, the rate of spreading is not accurate, and the fertilizer is often crushed too much. The objective of this research is to develop a simulation model for granular orga…

Identification ofCandida albicansclinical isolates by PCR amplification of anEFB1gene fragment containing an intron-interrupted open reading frame

2000

The use of a single pair of primers, deduced from the intron and exon nucleotide sequences of the Candida albicans EFB1 gene, in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays performed with whole cells of both laboratory strains and clinical isolates of Candida species, resulted in the species-specific amplification of a 785 bp DNA fragment in C. albicans strains. Clinical C. albicans isolates were tested, and 85 out of 86 generated the expected PCR-amplified product; other Candida species, both laboratory strains and clinical isolates, as well as laboratory strains belonging to other fungal genera, including medically relevant taxa, failed to amplify any DNA fragment. In addition, unusual C. albi…

Comparative sclerochronology of modern and mid-Pliocene (c. 3.5Ma) Aequipecten opercularis (Mollusca, Bivalvia): an insight into past and future clim…

2009

Records of environment contained within the accretionarily deposited tissues of fossil organisms afford a means of detailed reconstruction of past climates and hence of rigorous testing of numerical climate models. We identify the environmental factors controlling oxygen and carbon stable-isotopic composition, and microgrowth-increment size, in the shell of modern examples of the Queen Scallop, Aequipecten opercularis. This understanding is then applied in interpretation of data from mid-Pliocene A. opercularis from eastern England. On the basis of oxygen-isotope evidence we conclude that winter minimum seafloor temperature was similar to present values (typically 6–7 °C) in the adjacent so…

Isolation and characterization of Urbain, a 20-hydroxyecdysone-inducible gene expressed during morphogenesis of Bombyx mori wing imaginal discs.

1995

In insects, wing imaginal discs respond to the steroid hormone 20-hydroxyecdysone by initiating morphogenesis leading to the formation of the adult flight appendages. In this work we analyse the expression of a Bombyx gene, referred to as Urbain, whose cDNA had been previously isolated from wing discs (Chareyre et al. 1993). Accumulation of the 1.8 kb transcript occurs concomitantly with the increase of 20-hydroxyecdysone titer at every stage examined during post-embryonic development. In vitro, its accumulation is delayed 6–9 h after exposure to 20-hydroxyecdysone. Studies in the presence of cycloheximide have established that Urbain is a secondary response gene. The sequence of the mRNA c…

Identification of highly conserved genes: SNZ and SNO in the marine sponge Suberites domuncula: their gene structure and promoter activity in mammali…

2001

Abstract Recently, we reported that cells from the sponge Suberites domuncula respond to ethylene with an increase in intracellular Ca 2+ level [Ca 2+ ] i , and with an upregulation of the expression of (at least) two genes, a Ca 2+ /calmodulin-dependent protein kinase and the potential ethylene-responsive gene, termed SDSNZERR (A. Krasko, H.C. Schroder, S. Perovic, R. Steffen, M. Kruse, W. Reichert, I.M. Muller, W.E.G. Muller, J. Biol. Chem. 274 (1999)). Here, we describe for the first time that also mammalian (3T3) cells respond to ethylene, generated by ethephon, with an immediate and transient, strong increase in [Ca 2+ ] i . Next, the promoter for the sponge SDSNZERR gene was isolated …

Redefinición y positivación de la figura de Helena en la trilogía troyana de Eurípides

2017

Traditionally it has been considered that the change in the configuration of the character of Helen in Euripides does not take place until its tragedy Helen . This is, without doubt, the central work in which the redefinition and positivation of Helen will reach a full theatrical development. We think, with everything, that a more attentive reading of the motives used in previous tragedies gives us the key for the correct interpretation of the innovations that the author is introducing in the tragic characterization of this mythical figure. This process can be fixed in a convulsed period in the Athenian life, which goes from Nicias’s Peace to Euripides’ definitive march of Athens.

Don't throw away your printed books: A meta-analysis on the effects of reading media on reading comprehension

2018

Abstract With the increasing dominance of digital reading over paper reading, gaining understanding of the effects of the medium on reading comprehension has become critical. However, results from research comparing learning outcomes across printed and digital media are mixed, making conclusions difficult to reach. In the current meta-analysis, we examined research in recent years (2000–2017), comparing the reading of comparable texts on paper and on digital devices. We included studies with between-participants (n = 38) and within-participants designs (n = 16) involving 171,055 participants. Both designs yielded the same advantage of paper over digital reading (Hedge's g = −0.21; dc = −0.2…

Spreading Depression Induces Permanent Cell Swelling Under Penumbra Conditions

2000

Background. Spreading depression (SD) is known to go along with temporary breakdown of ion gradients and cell swelling which spontaneously normalizes. Here, the effects of SD at reduced flow conditions as encountered in the ischemic penumbra are examined.

TuinLEC, an intelligent tutoring system to improve reading literacy skills / TuinLEC, un tutor inteligente para mejorar la competencia lectora

2014

AbstractThis study describes an intelligent tutoring system to improve reading literacy skills called TuinLEC and it presents the results of its application to a group of sixth grade students. TuinLEC adopts the reading literacy theoretical framework of PISA (Program for International Students Assessment, OECD, 2009). TuinLEC includes eight lessons distributed in two phases, one for modeling and guided practice, and the second for independent practice. TuinLEC interacts with every student and it provides help and feedback for the task in a game-like environment. Half of the students were taught with TuinLEC, whereas the other half served as the control group. Children in both groups were pa…
