Efficient smart-camera accelerator: A configurable motion estimator dedicated to video codec

2013

Smart cameras are used in a large range of applications. Usually the smart cameras transmit the video or/and extracted information from the video scene, frequently on compressed format to fit with the application requirements. An efficient hardware accelerator that can be adapted and provide the required coding performances according to the events detected in the video, the available network bandwidth or user requirements, is therefore a key element for smart camera solutions. We propose in this paper to focus on a key part of the compression system: motion estimation. We have developed a flexible hardware implementation of the motion estimator based on FPGA component, fully compatible with…

Hardware Implementation of a Configurable Motion Estimator for Adjusting the Video Coding Performances

2012

International audience; Despite the diversity of video compression standard, the motion estimation still remains a key process which is used in most of them. Moreover, the required coding performances (bit-rate, PSNR, image spatial resolution, etc.) depend obviously of the application, the environment and the network communication. The motion estimation can therefore be adapted to fit with these performances. Meanwhile, the real time encoding is required in many applications. In order to reach this goal, we propose in this paper a hardware implementation of the motion estimator which enables the integer motion search algorithms to be modified and the fractional search and variable block siz…

Enhancing the Sniper Simulator with Thermal Measurement

2014

This paper presents the enhancement of the Sniper multicore / manycore simulator with thermal measurement possibilities using the HotSpot simulator. We present a plugin that interacts with Sniper to retrieve simulation data (integration areas and power consumptions) and calls HotSpot to compute the corresponding thermal results. The plugin also builds a two dimensional floorplan for the simulated microarchitecture. Furthermore we plan to integrate the simulation methodology presented here into an automatic design space exploration process using the multi-objective optimization tool called FADSE. Keywords—multicore; simulator; power consumption; thermal; HotSpot; Sniper

A Heterogeneous Sensor and Actuator Network Architecture for Ambient Intelligence

2014

One of the most important characteristics of a typical ambient intelligence scenario is the presence of a number of sensors and actuators that capture information about user preferences and activities. Such nodes, i.e., sensors and actuators, are often based on different technologies so that types of networks which are typically different coexist in a real system, for example, in a home or a building. In this chapter we present a heterogeneous sensor and actuator network architecture designed to separate network management issues from higher, intelligent layers. The effectiveness of the solution proposed here was evaluated using an experimental scenario involving the monitoring of an office…

Improving the Performance Metric of Wireless Sensor Networks with Clustering Markov Chain Model and Multilevel Fusion

2013

Published version of an article in the journal: Mathematical Problems in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2013/783543 Open access The paper proposes a performance metric evaluation for a distributed detection wireless sensor network with respect to IEEE 802.15.4 standard. A distributed detection scheme is considered with presence of the fusion node and organized sensors into the clustering and non-clustering networks. Sensors are distributed in clusters uniformly and nonuniformly and network has multilevel fusion centers. Fusion centers act as heads of clusters for decision making based on majority-like received signal strength (RSS) with comparis…

Bandwidth Resource Management for Neural Signal Telemetry

2009

Recent advances in modern neurocomputing have shown the utmost necessity of wireless communication systems that allow real-time (RT) monitoring of neural signals meeting several requirements such as source compression and high fidelity of the received signal. Neural recordings require multielectrode probes with up to hundreds of electrodes and transmission of signals wirelessly over a limited bandwidth (BW). In this paper, a RT resource management algorithm is proposed so that adequate source compression is applied to each channel in order to fit them into the available BW. Performance of the algorithm is analyzed using dynamically changing BW and neural recordings with different neural act…

Cycle-triggered averaging of respiration-related neuronal activity

1985

Abstract A computer system is presented which provides off-line computation of cycle-triggered histograms (CTH) of respiration-related neuronal activity. Binwidths of the histograms are freely selectable by software from 10 ms to 100 ms. For special evaluation purposes. CTHs can be standardized in different ways concerning cycle duration as well as amplitude. Time incidence of maximum frequency, center of gravity and expiration-to-inspiration phase transition within the respiratory cycle are computed. The system employs special hardware interfaces to an 8-bit microcomputer which are briefly described. Data acquisition, data manipulation and output handling of the results are performed by ch…

Analysis of data fusion techniques for multi-microphone audio event detection in adverse environments

2017

Acoustic event detection (AED) is currently a very active research area with multiple applications in the development of smart acoustic spaces. In this context, the advances brought by Internet of Things (IoT) platforms where multiple distributed microphones are available have also contributed to this interest. In such scenarios, the use of data fusion techniques merging information from several sensors becomes an important aspect in the design of multi-microphone AED systems. In this paper, we present a preliminary analysis of several data-fusion techniques aimed at improving the recognition accuracy of an AED system by taking advantage of the diversity provided by multiple microphones in …

Impulse noise removal on an embedded, low memory SIMD processor

2003

Vector median filters efficiently reduce noise while preserving image details. However, their high computational complexity for color images makes them impractical for real-time systems. We propose new computationally efficient filtering algorithms, called index mapping filters (IMF). These filtering algorithms are accelerated by implementing them on a massively data parallel processor array. In addition to greater computational efficiency, these algorithms result in robust noise reduction of corrupted color images. Analyses of mean square error, signal-to-noise-ratio, and visual comparison metrics indicate that IMF are competitive with the vector median filter (VMF) in their ability to cor…

Implementation and performance of the third level muon trigger of the ATLAS experiment at LHC

2006

The trigger system of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC aims at a high selectivity in order to keep the full physics potential while reducing the 40 MHz initial event rate imposed by the LHC bunch crossing down to /spl sim/100 Hz, as required by the data acquisition system. Algorithms working in the final stage of the trigger environment (Event Filter) are implemented to run both in a "wrapped" mode (reconstructing tracks in the entire Muon Spectrometer) and in a "seeded" mode (according to a dedicated strategy that performs pattern recognition only in regions of the detector where trigger hypotheses have been produced at earlier stages). The working principles of the offline muon reconstruct…
