Simultaneous ranging and self-positioning in unsynchronized wireless acoustic sensor networks

2016

Automatic ranging and self-positioning is a very desirable property in wireless acoustic sensor networks, where nodes have at least one microphone and one loudspeaker. However, due to environmental noise, interference, and multipath effects, audio-based ranging is a challenging task. This paper presents a fast ranging and positioning strategy that makes use of the correlation properties of pseudonoise sequences for estimating simultaneously relative time-of-arrivals from multiple acoustic nodes. To this end, a proper test signal design adapted to the acoustic node transducers is proposed. In addition, a novel self-interference reduction method and a peak matching algorithm are introduced, a…

HDR-ARtiSt: High Dynamic Range Advanced Real-Time Imaging System

2012

International audience; This paper describes the HDR-ARtiSt hardware platform, a FPGA-based architecture that can produce a real- time high dynamic range video from successive image acquisition. The hardware platform is built around a standard low dynamic range (LDR) CMOS sensor and a Virtex 5 FPGA board. The CMOS sensor is a EV76C560 provided by e2v. This 1.3 Megapixel device offers novel pixel integration/readout modes and em- bedded image pre-processing capabilities including multiframe acquisition with various exposure times. Our approach consists of a hardware architecture with different algorithms: double exposure control during image capture, building of an HDR image by combining the…

Taking digitized points quality into account in geometrical specification measurement by laser sensor

2004

International audience; Today, the new measurement techniques without contact like the laser sensors are used more and more in industrial applications. They allow to obtain many points in a short time. However these techniques have a less good accuracy than the classical process with contact probe for metrology application. The work presented in this paper, is part of a research project on the in-process product inspection. In the case of in-process product inspection, the throughput time must be the shortest with a good dimensional accuracy. So, it is necessary to increase the measurement accuracy of the points cloud for using the laser scanners. For this first approach, we suggest to buil…

Fast and Robust Face Detection on a Parallel Optimized Architecture implemented on FPGA

2009

In this paper, we present a parallel architecture for fast and robust face detection implemented on FPGA hardware. We propose the first implementation that meets both real-time requirements in an embedded context and face detection robustness within complex backgrounds. The chosen face detection method is the Convolutional Face Finder (CFF) algorithm, which consists of a pipeline of convolution and subsampling operations, followed by a multilayer perceptron. We present the design methodology of our face detection processor element (PE). This methodology was followed in order to optimize our implementation in terms of memory usage and parallelization efficiency. We then built a parallel arch…

A portable system for multiple parameters monitoring: towards assessment of health conditions and stress level in the automotive field

2019

In this work, an electronic portable combo system able to synchronously acquire multiple signals, e.g. electrocardiographic (ECG), photoplethysmographic (PPG) and breathing waveforms, is presented. The realized system is also capable of showing in real time some physiological parameters which can be used for assessing health/stress status of the volunteer, such as heart rate and breathing frequency and their trends over time. Thanks to the use of non-invasive PPG probes, of batteries as power supply, and to the possibility to add in the future additional sensors to acquire other signals, the system could also be employed inside vehicles for assessing the status of the driver. Finally, the r…

Application Layer FEC for Mobile TV Delivery in IP Datacast Over DVB-H Systems

2009

In this paper we investigate the potential gain that can be obtained in DVB-H using application layer forward error correction (AL-FEC) to perform a multi-burst protection of the transmission for improving the reception of streaming services for mobile terminals. Compared to the conventional approach with link layer multi protocol encapsulation FEC (MPE-FEC), this technique allows to increase the robustness of the DVB-H transmission not only as a function of the capacity devoted for error repair (FEC overhead), but also as a function of the number of bursts jointly encoded. The main drawback of this approach is an increase of the network latency, that can be translated into a larger service…

Improving the multiple errors detection coverage in distributed embedded systems

2004

Currently, a lot of critical applications in automobile and aircraft avionics are built on fault-tolerant real-time distributed embedded systems. Fault injection techniques have been used extensively in the experimental validation of these systems and it is a challenge to adapt them to the demands of new technologies. This paper deals with the effect of physical faults at pin level on the Communication Network Interface in a prototype based on time-triggered architecture. Due to the essential necessity of observing system behavior during injection experiments, a suitable monitor for distributed embedded systems is proposed. The monitor is used to detect failures in the value domain that cou…

DTMC modeling for performance evaluation of DW-MAC in wireless sensor networks

2016

Synchronized duty cycling (DC) aligns sensor nodes to wake up at the same time in order to reduce idle listening for medium access control (MAC) in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Demand wakeup MAC (DW-MAC) is a popular synchronous DC MAC protocol which allows nodes to compete and transmit multiple packets in one operational cycle. This multiple packet transmission (MPT) feature makes DW-MAC more energy efficient when comparing with other existing single time competition based protocols such as sensor MAC (S-MAC). In the literature, no analytical model exists to evaluate the performance of DW-MAC. In this paper, we develop two associated discrete time Markov chain (DTMC) models and incorpo…

A Self-Powered Long-range Wireless IoT Device based on LoRaWAN

2020

In this article, we propose a self-powered long-range wireless Internet-of-Things (IoT) device based on Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) with various sensing capabilities. The nodes are designed based on ambient energy harvesting in such a way that these are self-sustainable throughout the components’ lifespan. Also, these nodes can be deployed on a large scale and are maintenance-free. In addition, these nodes can be deployed in remote places where the accessibility is limited, and maintenance is difficult. The wireless sensor nodes can be deployed both in indoor and outdoor environments with sufficient light levels for the solar panel, such as indoor lights in the indoor environment…

Face Processing on Low-Power Devices

2009

The research on embedded vision-based techniques is considered nowadays as one of the most interesting matters of computer vision. In this work we address the scenario in which a real-time face processing system is needed to monitor people walking through some locations. Some face detection (e.g., Viola-Jones face detector) and face recognition (e.g., eigenfaces) approaches have reached a certain level of maturity, so we focused on the development of such techniques on embedded systems taking into account both hardware and software constraints. Our goal is to detect the presence of some known individuals inside some sensitive areas producing a compact description of the observed people. Cap…
