Multifaceted effects of oligodendroglial exosomes on neurons: impact on neuronal firing rate, signal transduction and gene regulation.
2014
Exosomes are small membranous vesicles of endocytic origin that are released by almost every cell type. They exert versatile functions in intercellular communication important for many physiological and pathological processes. Recently, exosomes attracted interest with regard to their role in cell–cell communication in the nervous system. We have shown that exosomes released from oligodendrocytes upon stimulation with the neurotransmitter glutamate are internalized by neurons and enhance the neuronal stress tolerance. Here, we demonstrate that oligodendroglial exosomes also promote neuronal survival during oxygen–glucose deprivation, a model of cerebral ischaemia. We show the transfer from…
Endoplasmic reticulum stress is involved in response of human laryngeal carcinoma cells to carboplatin but is absent in carboplatin resistant cells
2013
The major obstacle of successful tumor treatment with carboplatin (CBP) is the development of drug resistance. In the present study, we found that following treatment with CBP the amount of platinum which enters the human laryngeal carcinoma (HEp2)-derived CBP- resistant (7T) cells is reduced relative to the parental HEp2. As a consequence, the formation of reactive oxidative species (ROS) is reduced, the induction of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is diminished, the amount of inter- and intrastrand cross-links is lower, and the induction of apoptosis is depressed. In HEp2 cells, ROS scavenger tempol, inhibitor of ER stress salubrinal, as well as gene silencing of ER stress marker CCAAT/…
Human Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stem cells maintain the expression of key immunomodulatory molecules when subjected to osteogenic, adipogenic and c…
2013
Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are the main diseases that imply an inflammatory process at the joints involving the articular cartilage. Recently, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from perinatal tissues were considered good candidates for cellular therapy of musculoskeletal and orthopaedic diseases, since they can differentiate into multiple cell types and are an easily accessible cellular source. Therefore, several protocols exist on the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells of different origins into osteoblasts and chondrocytes. Another key feature of MSCs is their capacity to modulate the immune system responses in vitro and in vivo. This may have critical outcomes in d…
Axonal control of the adult neural stem cell niche.
2014
SummaryThe ventricular-subventricular zone (V-SVZ) is an extensive germinal niche containing neural stem cells (NSCs) in the walls of the lateral ventricles of the adult brain. How the adult brain’s neural activity influences the behavior of adult NSCs remains largely unknown. We show that serotonergic (5HT) axons originating from a small group of neurons in the raphe form an extensive plexus on most of the ventricular walls. Electron microscopy revealed intimate contacts between 5HT axons and NSCs (B1) or ependymal cells (E1) and these cells were labeled by a transsynaptic viral tracer injected into the raphe. B1 cells express the 5HT receptors 2C and 5A. Electrophysiology showed that acti…
Treatment of Dimpling from Cellulite.
2018
Background:. Cellulite can be seen on the skin in widespread alterations of the skin surface and dimpling. The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness and safety of the manual subcision technique to treat dimpling from cellulite, using a specific class IIA medical device (Celluerase). Methods:. The multi-center observational study assessed 200 women treated in a single session for different dimpling, using manual subcision administered by Celluerase. Aesthetic outcomes were evaluated by the authors, and the patients assessed satisfaction levels. Results:. Two hundred women between 20 and 55 years were treated. The medical evaluation of patients saw improvements with an average…
The Micro-Shear bond strength of different cements to commercially pure titanium
2019
Background The most appropriate luting agent for attaching the prefabricated Ti-based insert of hybrid abutments to its ceramic component has not yet been determined. This study was done aimed at examining the micro-shear bond strength (μSBS) of different cements to commercially pure titanium (Cp Ti). Material and Methods A total of 100 milled cubes of Cp Ti was airborne-particle abraded using 250 μm aluminum oxide particles. Specimens were then divided into 5 groups (n=20) according to the type of resin cement used: (1) Panavia F.2, (2) Rely X U200, (3) Panavia SA LUTING Plus, (4) GC Fuji I, and (5) GC FujiCEM 2. After 24h storage, half of the samples were subjected to 5000 cycles of therm…
Geopolitical aspects of prudery, or Stalin as the breeches maker: political censorship and puritan censorship in the USSR
2015

Generalized centro-invertible matrices with applications
2014
Centro-invertible matrices are introduced by R.S. Wikramaratna in 2008. For an involutory matrix R, we define the generalized centro-invertible matrices with respect to R to be those matrices A such that RAR = A^−1. We apply these matrices to a problem in modular arithmetic. Specifically, algorithms for image blurring/deblurring are designed by means of generalized centro-invertible matrices. In addition, if R1 and R2 are n × n involutory matrices, then there is a simple bijection between the set of all centro-invertible matrices with respect to R1 and the set with respect to R2.
