Finite element modelling of slipage between FRP rebar and concrete in pull-out test
2014
The paper presents numerical results of direct pull-out test of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebars embedded in concrete. Rebars of three different cross-sections are considered: circular without longitudinal ribs and with two and four ribs. The design analyses of the rebar configurations embedded in concrete are investigated by the 3D finite element method (FEM), which takes into account the non-linearity using ANSYS software. The results of the numerical model with two ribs were compared with the experimental results. Then, the effect of different rebar geometries to the load-slip pull-out curves was studied. It is concluded that the influence of rib height and width on the pull-…
Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for studying passive layers on steel rebars immersed in alkaline solutions simulating concrete pores
2007
Present paper deals with the use of the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to identify different processes in the passive layer growth over steel rebar surface immersed in an alkaline media simulating the concrete pore solution. Two cases have been considered: a passive layer spontaneously grown in a high alkaline media and a passive layer assisted by the application of an anodic potential in the same media. The application of electric equivalent circuits allows distinguishing between the different mechanisms occurring in this passive layer when grows in different conditions. An electric equivalent circuit with two RC loops connected in parallel is often used for fitting the EIS diagram…
Elastoplastic Damaging Model for Adhesive Anchor Systems. I: Theoretical Formulation and Numerical Implementation
2011
In this and in the companion paper, the mechanical response of adhesive anchor systems is theoretically and numerically predicted and experimentally observed. The theoretical prediction is on the basis of an elastoplastic damaging model formulated to predict the structural response associated with the development of a fracture in adhesive anchor systems. This part describes the analytical model developed in the framework of a thermodynamically consistent theory, which assumes adhesion where the structure is sound, and friction in correspondence with the fracture. Isotropic damage is considered. The model can predict the structural behavior at the interface between two surfaces of ductile, b…
Simplified analytical model for flexural response of external R.C. frames with smooth rebars
2018
In this paper an analytical model in a closed form able to reproduce the monotonic flexural response of external RC beam-column joints with smooth rebars is presented. The column is subjected to a constant vertical load and the beam to a monotonically increasing lateral force applied at the tip. The model is based on the flexural behavior of the beam and the column determined adopting a concentrated plasticity hinge model including slippage of the main reinforcing bars of the beam. A simplified bilinear moment-axial force domain is assumed to derive the ultimate moment associated with the design axial force. For the joint, a simple truss model is adopted to predict shear strength and panel …
Elastoplastic Damaging Model for Adhesive Anchor Systems. II: Numerical and Experimental Validation
2011
This paper presents the numerical and experimental validation of the analytical elastoplastic damaging model proposed in the companion paper (Part I). The validation was carried out by describing the pullout failure of epoxy adhesive anchors. Pullout tests were simulated numerically and performed experimentally. Several specimens made of a rebar embedded in a hardened concrete cylinder by means of polyester resin were tested. Conventional strain gauges and acoustic emission (AE) sensors were used to evaluate the structural response of the system and to monitor the onset and progression of structural damage, respectively. The parametric analysis and the moment tensor analysis of the AE data …
Acoustic Emission Monitoring of Chemically Bonded Anchors
2010
This paper presents a study on the use of acoustic emission (AE) to assess the structural soundness of concrete reinforced with chemically bonded anchors. The results of an experimental work based on six pullout tests monitored using an AE instrumentation suite are reported below. In every test one rebar was embedded in the hardened concrete by means of polyester resin. The AE was adopted to moni- tor the onset and progression of any structural damage. The parametric analysis, the intensity analysis and the moment tensor analysis of AE data were used to discriminate among different sources of damage. The technique shows promise for field application and may contribute to fully understand th…
Stiffness and strength of composite truss beam to R.C. column connection in MRFs
2015
Abstract The results of experimental and numerical investigations on the cyclic behavior of composite truss beam to reinforced concrete column connection of moment resisting frames are reported. The beams are constituted by a steel truss and end zone added rebar embedded within a concrete block cast in place, so that, after curing, the steel truss and the added rebar work together with the concrete matrix as reinforcement of the composite beam. Particularly, three specimens of two-span continuous beams were tested under monotonic and cyclic actions as three point bending test. With the goal to investigate about the behavior of the end zone of the beam integrated into a moment resisting fram…
Heterogeneous crystallization of zinc hydroxystannate on galvanized steel for enhancing the bond strength at the rebar/concrete interface
2021
Abstract Zinc hydroxystannate (ZnSn(OH)6) coatings were deposited on galvanized carbon steel samples by an electroless heterogeneous crystallization process. Structural and morphological features of the coatings as a function of the immersion time were determined by X-ray diffraction, Raman Spectroscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy revealing the presence of truncated octahedrons of crystalline ZnSn(OH)6. Electrochemical characterization in a simulated concrete pore solution without and with addition of chloride ions proved that the cathodic protection is preserved and that ZnSn(OH)6 improved the corrosion resistance of the rebars. Pull-out tests demonstrated an enhanced bond strength at…
Push-Over Analysis of RC Frame with Corroded Rebar
2019
Abstract As known, the Italian building heritage largely consists of reinforced concrete frames designed before the ‘80s, which are, in many cases, built in the absence of specific anti-seismic criteria. Moreover, many of them, today, are characterized by bad structural conditions. Moreover, the problem of the structural conditions of the existing buildings, and their residual strength capacity, is often linked to the deterioration induced by the corrosive phenomena, which end up having a big impact on steel rebar mechanical properties. In this work, in order to investigate the influence of corrosion-damage on seismic response of existing reinforced concrete structures, a study has been car…
Analytical Prediction of the Flexural Response of External RC Joints with Smooth Rebars
2018
