Spectroscopic factor and proton formation probability for the d3/2 proton emitter 151Lu

2017

The quenching of the experimental spectroscopic factor for proton emission from the short-lived $d_{3/2}$ isomeric state in $^{151m}$Lu was a long-standing problem. In the present work, proton emission from this isomer has been reinvestigated in an experiment at the Accelerator Laboratory of the University of Jyv\"{a}skyl\"{a}. The proton-decay energy and half-life of this isomer were measured to be 1295(5) keV and 15.4(8) $\mu$s, respectively, in agreement with another recent study. These new experimental data can resolve the discrepancy in the spectroscopic factor calculated using the spherical WKB approximation. Using the R-matrix approach it is found that the proton formation probabilit…

Response of the XENON100 dark matter detector to nuclear recoils

2013

Results from the nuclear recoil calibration of the XENON100 dark matter detector installed underground at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Italy are presented. Data from measurements with an external 241AmBe neutron source are compared with a detailed Monte Carlo simulation which is used to extract the energy dependent charge-yield Qy and relative scintillation efficiency Leff. A very good level of absolute spectral matching is achieved in both observable signal channels - scintillation S1 and ionization S2 - along with agreement in the 2-dimensional particle discrimination space. The results confirm the validity of the derived signal acceptance in earlier reported dark matte…

Recoil-α-fission and recoil-α–α-fission events observed in the reaction 48Ca + 243Am

2016

Products of the fusion-evaporation reaction 48Ca + 243Am were studied with the TASISpec set-up at the gas-filled separator TASCA at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt, Germany. Amongst the detected thirty correlated α-decay chains associated with the production of element Z=115, two recoil-α-fission and five recoil-α-α-fission events were observed. The latter five chains are similar to four such events reported from experiments performed at the Dubna gas-filled separator, and three such events reported from an experiment at the Berkeley gas-filled separator. The four chains observed at the Dubna gas-filled separator were assigned to start from the 2n-evaporation ch…

Ion source and low energy beam transport prototyping for a single-ended heavy ion ToF-ERDA facility

2023

We present the status of the ion source and low energy beam transport prototyping activities for a heavy ion time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis (ToF-ERDA) equipment, designed to accelerate a flux of 1–10 particle nano-Ampere of 40Ar6-12+ ions to 3–6 MeV energy for depth profiling of light elements. The prototype injector consists of a novel permanent magnet electron cyclotron resonance ion source CUBE-ECRIS with a minimum-B quadrupole field topology, and a 90° permanent magnet dipole with adjustable field strength for charge state selection. We report experimentally measured argon beam currents as a function of the applied microwave power and ion source potential to demonstrat…

High voltage conditioning of the electrostatic deflector of MARA

2016

Abstract MARA is a new recoil mass separator in the Accelerator Laboratory of University of Jyvaskyla (JYFL-ACCLAB) with a mass resolving power of 250 and an ion-optical configuration of QQQD E D M . In this paper the construction, control and conditioning of its electrostatic deflector are described. The deflector was designed for voltages up to 500 kV accross the gap, corresponding to a 3.6 MV/m field, to accomodate fusion reactions with inverse kinematics. Titanium electrodes with a beam dump opening in the anode are used. The conditioning procedure, which has been used repeatedly to take the deflector to 450 kV, is described, along with the safety systems and precautions that are in pla…

Helium-jet transportation of recoil atoms into a liquid phase

1973

Abstract A rapid inexpensive method has been developed for transportation of recoiling short-lived radioactive nuclides from a target chamber over distances of several meters into a liquid phase. This allows rapid radiochemical separation of different elements. The carrier-loaded helium-jet transport technique is employed without a pumping system. The method would appear to be applicable to most chemical elements. The transport efficiency is higher than 50% and the transport time can be made much shorter than 1 s. Radiochemical separation times of a few seconds were achieved.

Transport efficiency of the helium-jet recoil-transport method with pure helium

1973

Abstract New techniques have been developed for measuring the transport efficiency of the helium-jet recoil-transport method in the transport of radioactive recoil atoms. The dependence of the transport efficiency on main equipment parameters was studied experimentally using pure commercial-grade helium. The results are given in terms of helium mass throughput, capillary parameters and location of a catcher foil. High to moderate efficiencies were observed at transport distances shorter than 20 cm. Efficiencies obtained with pure helium at distances longer than 1 m are low, typically less than 1%. Possibilities for further development of the method are briefly discussed.

In-flight separation with gas-filled systems

1997

Abstract The application of gas-filled recoil separators in the study of fusion evaporation products from heavy ion induced reactions will be discussed. Practical methods for estimating the average magnetic rigidity of fusion products and target-like nuclei will be presented. Examples will be given of typical background intensities observed in studies of heavy elements. The merits of gas-filled devices in comparison with other in-flight separators will be discussed. Selected recent applications in the fields of heavy element research and in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy will be presented, and finally, some future projects will be discussed.

The new vacuum-mode recoil separator MARA at JYFL

2008

Abstract A new vacuum-mode recoil separator MARA (Mass Analysing Recoil Apparatus) is under design and construction at the Department of Physics in the University of Jyvaskyla. The separator is intended to separate reaction products from the primary beam in mass region below A = 150 . The ion-optical configuration of the separator will be QQQDEDM, where a magnetic quadrupole (Q) triplet is followed by an electrostatic deflector (DE) and a magnetic dipole (DM). The total length of MARA will be less than 7.0 m and the first order resolving power more than 250 for a beam spot size of 2 mm. In this contribution the main properties of MARA are given and results from simulations are shown.
