Potentials for critical raw materials recovery from Mediterranean saltworks bitterns
2022
Minerals extraction from seawater brines is currently regarded as the most practical approach to reduce European dependency from the import of many Critical Raw Materials. The technical feasibility of such approach has been widely demonstrated in several different research and development projects but the economic sustainability has always been found to depend on the local demand for sodium chloride, which is always the most abundant product of the extraction. Starting from this crucial node, the SEArcularMINE project has investigated the possibility to use the residual brines originated by sea-salt extraction in traditional saltworks, regarded as an already well-established marketplace. Th…
Mildronate treatment improves functional recovery following middle cerebral artery occlusion in rats
2011
Mildronate (3-(2,2,2-trimethylhydrazinium) propionate) is an inhibitor of l-carnitine biosynthesis and an anti-ischemic drug. In the present study, we investigated the effects of mildronate in rats following focal cerebral ischemia. Male Wistar rats were subjected to transient occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCAO) for 90min, followed by the intraperitoneal administration of mildronate at doses of 100 and 200mg/kg 2h after reperfusion and then daily for an additional 14days. The beam-walking, rota-rod and cylinder tests were used to assess sensorimotor function, and vibrissae-evoked forelimb-placing and limb-placing tests examined responses to tactile and proprioceptive stimulation.…
Magnesium recovery from exhausted brine
2015
Mg and MgCO3 are among the 20 EU critical raw materials. Interestingly, Mg can be found at very high concentration in brines generated as waste stream from salt works. Literature works have demonstrated the feasibility of Mg extraction from brines [1–3] by reactive precipitation, for the production of Mg(OH)2. Here we present an overview of the experimental campaigns carried out using exhausted brine from real salt works (Italy) to produce Mg(OH)2 with high purity and conversion. Lab – and pilot-scale batch and semi-continuous CSTR crystallisers were developed and tested, eventually leading to a continuous process by a quasi-PFR pilot reactor. Different alkaline solutions have been adopted …
A continuous plug flow reactor for magnesium recovery from concentrated brine
2015
Magnesium is one of the eight most abundant elements on the world and the third most abun- dant in the sea, buc practically only two countries (Russia and China) control the world market for this compound. Product purity, Mg recovery, crystal morphology and granulometric distribution of precipitated particles were examined through careful laboratory analysis and results from different tests were compared, in order to identify the effect of allcaline species’ nature and concentration on precipitation phenomena.
Surface water RO permeate remineralization through minerals recovery from brines
2022
Assisted-Reverse Electrodialysis (A-RED) technology was applied following reverse osmosis (RO) of a surface water resource in order to recover minerals from its brine and directly remineralize the RO unit's permeate. Four different sets of cation/anion exchange membranes were benchmarked using single- and mixed-salts synthetic solutions as well as real brine and permeate streams produced from three-stage reverse osmosis applied to Seine River water. The process, operating under equal permeate and brine channel flows (2 cm/s velocities) and applied voltage varying from 0 to 10 V, showed viable remineralization results. Optimal recovery at 10 V applied allowed increasing permeate mineral cont…
Safety as design requirement in the intervention on architectural and building heritage
2012
UNSUSTAINABLE LIVING. Recovery and reintegration of degraded environments
2012
Building abusiveness contributed to the progressive worsening of urban conditions and environmental crisis, generating a soil uncontrolled consumption, territory’s exploiting, bigger pollution indexes, besides the absence of building quality, levelling of languages and life models, alteration of recognising and territory belonging values, urban and extra urban landscape levelling. Building abusiveness is clearly a territorial emergency which needs technical owning to formulate sudden and effective intervention strategies. The fight against building abusiveness is still today a challenge for both environment and territory. The present volume investigates the issue of environmental decay dete…
REHABILITATION, ENHANCEMENT AND PROMOTION OF ART NOUVEAU BUILDINGS
2016
Since ancient times every era has produced a particular architectural heritage with different materials and with the use of different construction. This study aims to make a contribution in terms of knowledge and the architectural heritage of the 20th century, recovery, and in particular those representing the Sicilian architecture known as Liberty architecture. The study explores the relationship between architecture, materials, construction techniques and the building restoration and enhancement problems. The main purpose of this research is on the one hand the analysis and technological knowledge of the architectural heritage and the other to study the types of …
Designing a sustainable regeneration in the outskirt of Agrigento
2016
This paper describes a case of building recovery and sustainable re-use in Sicily, that is the recovery of Villaseta. It is a very degraded neighborhood in the outskirts of Agrigento. The main goal of the redevelopment project is therefore the rebuilding and the environmental regeneration of the neighborhood, using sustainable technologies and tools, with the construction of vegetable gardens and urban gardens, the production of renewable energy and the sustainable recovery of existing buildings. The eco-friendliness of the restoration project is therefore given by the use of garden roofs and vertical gardens. Villaseta will be a real "green lung" able to give greater environmental awarenes…
