Hemoconcentration induced by exercise: Revisiting the Dill and Costill equation

2014

The Dill and Costill equation is used to estimate the exercise-induced hemoconcentration. However, this cal- culation requires drawing an extra whole-blood sample, which cannot be frozen and has to be analyzed with dedi- cate instrumentation in a relative short time. The aim of the present study was to explore the usefulness of some serum biochemical parameters to estimate hemoconcen- tration induced by exhaustive exercise. Fourteen healthy male subjects (19-34 years) performed a15-min running test at 110% of anaerobic threshold speed. Hemoglobin, hematocrit, brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), creatinine, gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), total-proteins, albu- min, total calcium (Ca), K + ,N a…

Self-control and need satisfaction in primetime: Television, social media, and friends can enhance regulatory resources via perceived autonomy and co…

2021

The relationship between self-control and media use is complicated. Loss of self-control capacity has been linked to generally higher levels of media use, which might represent self-regulatory failure, but could also be attempts at replenishing self-control. Indeed, self-determination theory proposes that satisfying intrinsic psychological needs (autonomy, competence, and relatedness), for example via media use, aids the recovery of self-control. In this 2-wave survey (N = 395), we examined the interplay of users’ self-control capacity and their perceived satisfaction of autonomy, competence, and relatedness needs via media use and alternative leisure activities. Satisfaction of intrinsic n…

Photobiology in space: An experiment on Spacelab I

1984

The joint European/US Spacelab Mission I, scheduled for October 1983 for a 9 day lasting Earth-orbiting flight, provides a laboratory system for various disciplines of science, including exobiology. On the pallet, in the experiment ES 029 "Microorganisms and Biomolecules in Space Hard Environment" 316 dry samples of Bacillus subtilis spores will be exposed to space vacuum and/or selected wavelenghs of solar UV radiation. After recovery action spectra of inactivation, mutation induction, reparability and photochemical damage in DNA and protein will be determined. The results will contribute to the understanding of the mechanism of the increased UV sensitivity of bacterial spores in vacuo and…

Colonisation process of vegetative fragments of Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile on rubble mounds

2005

Seagrass colonise new areas via the dispersion of seeds or vegetative fragments. Independent of the manner of colonization, habitat requirements need to be met for the successful establishment of seagrasses. Here we report on the colonization process of Posidonia oceanica in a highly disturbed area: a gas pipeline trench at Capo Feto (SW Sicily, Italy). A trench dredged through a P. oceanica bed was back-filled with rubble added from dump barges leading to the formation of a series of rubble mounds on the seabed. Over time, these mounds became colonised with P. oceanica. In order to understand the pattern of P. oceanica colonization, shoot density was quantified over 3 years (2001-2003) on …

FRIPON: a worldwide network to track incoming meteoroids

2020

Context. Until recently, camera networks designed for monitoring fireballs worldwide were not fully automated, implying that in case of a meteorite fall, the recovery campaign was rarely immediate. This was an important limiting factor as the most fragile - hence precious - meteorites must be recovered rapidly to avoid their alteration. Aims. The Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network (FRIPON) scientific project was designed to overcome this limitation. This network comprises a fully automated camera and radio network deployed over a significant fraction of western Europe and a small fraction of Canada. As of today, it consists of 150 cameras and 25 European radio receiver…

Societal and economic aspects of a novel circular system for the valorisation of desalination brine and waste heat from a power plant

2022

Direct disposal of concentrate brines produced in industrial plants can have a relevant impact to environmental systems. For this reason, brine treatment and valorisation could help to avoid disposal and produce marketable salts, thus representing a possible economic benefit. With this aim, a novel process, where advanced separation technologies are combined with waste heat recovery, is proposed within the EU-funded WATER MINING project. The Case Study presented in this work concerns the power plant in Lampedusa island, where waste heat and desalination brine are available to implement the process via a pilot plant to be installed for alternative thermal treatment of the brine. The aim is t…

Diffusion of small molecules in edible films: Effect of water and interactions between diffusant and biopolymer

2008

Mass transfers of various molecules in multiphasic food products lead to quality modification and thus require the use of edible films or coatings in-between the foodstuff. Consequently, it is important to assess the barrier properties and efficiencies of edible films as well as to determine the diffusivities of the migrants. Translational diffusion of a reference molecule such as fluorescein, determined by the fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) method, displays a threshold of a critical water content inducing an increase of the molecular mobility, and demonstrates that multiple populations of a single molecular specie can be involved in different diffusion kinetics. Further …

Widening the applicability of AnMBR for urban wastewater treatment through PDMS membranes for dissolved methane capture: Effect of temperature and hy…

2021

[EN] AnMBR technology is a promising alternative to achieve future energy-efficiency and environmental-friendly urban wastewater (UWW) treatment. However, the large amount of dissolved methane lost in the effluent represents a potential high environmental impact that hinder the feasibility of this technology for full-scale applications. The use of degassing membranes (DM) to capture the dissolved methane from AnMBR effluents can be considered as an interesting alternative to solve this problem although further research is required to assess the suitability of this emerging technology. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of operating temperature and hydrodynamics on the capture of…

Dynamic Membranes for Enhancing Resources Recovery from Municipal Wastewater

2022

[EN] This paper studied the feasibility of using dynamic membranes (DMs) to treat municipal wastewater (MWW). Effluent from the primary settler of a full-scale wastewater treatment plant was treated using a flat 1 mu m pore size open monofilament polyamide woven mesh as supporting material. Two supporting material layers were required to self-form a DM in the short-term (17 days of operation). Different strategies (increasing the filtration flux, increasing the concentration of operating solids and coagulant dosing) were used to enhance the required forming time and pollutant capture efficiency. Higher permeate flux and increased solids were shown to be ineffective while coagulant dosing sh…

Measuring psychosocial stress with heart rate variability-based methods in different health and age groups

2022

Abstract Objective. Autonomic nervous system function and thereby bodily stress and recovery reactions may be assessed by wearable devices measuring heart rate (HR) and its variability (HRV). So far, the validity of HRV-based stress assessments has been mainly studied in healthy populations. In this study, we determined how psychosocial stress affects physiological and psychological stress responses in both young (18–30 years) and middle-aged (45–64 years) healthy individuals as well as in patients with arterial hypertension and/or either prior evidence of prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. We also studied how an HRV-based stress index (Relax-Stress Intensity, RSI) relates to perceived stress …
